Episode 1: Tony Iommi

Guest Guitarist: Phil Collen (Def Leppard)

Just like last season kick-off episode, this one fell a bit flat. I don't know why it is, but it may have something to do with them relying too much on the same format. For starters, they need to dump the Top 5 List that use to open each episode. Their list have pretty much sucked and they can never agree who should be on the list and in what order.

As for Tony Iommi, it was cool finally getting him on the show. But Eddie, Don and Jim blew it by wasting the majority of the hour just acting like fanboys and not asking deeper questions.

Added Episode Index

For whatever reason, VH1 Classic video links are broken and won't work on this site or anywhere else for that matter. So, I'm posting the Index that has Episode 1. When the links are fixed, I will go back to posting individual episodes as before.

Episode 2: Jani Lane, Michael Sweet and Taime Down

Guest Guitarist: Phil Collen (Def Leppard)

This episode was dedicated in the memory of Jani Lane who passed shortly after taping.

As for the episode itself, Michael Sweet really hasn't age much. Still looks the same. Jani Lane looks completely different from the last time I saw him when he was huge and on Celeb Fit Camp. He was super skinny on the show, but not a healthy look at all.. And Taime Down...what the hell happened to him? He has not age well at all.

Overall there were some really funny moments like Jim asking Michael as a kid if he could get into check out the sound-check and being rebuffed, and Jim telling him that he had just come from church....on a Thursday afteroon. Haha. It worked, he got into the sound-check. Another funny moment was when the fan ask Eddie Trunk to name 15 out of 22 UFO albums. The joke was on everyone in that he named 16. Impressive.

The Top 5 segment was name the 5 best songs about the devil

My Top 5 3 Devil Songs

1. AC/DC - Highway To Hell
2. Van Halen - Running With The Devil
3. Motley Crue - Shout At The Devil

This is all I could come up with that I actually like.

The Throwdown: Van Halen's Women and Children First Vs. Fair Warning

My pick: Women and Children First

Episode 3: Tom Morello and Dug Pinnick

Special Guest Guitarist: Tony MacAlpine

What a great episode and something with a little more balls to it given the political overtones and what they each had to deal with getting to where they eventually ended up at. Both gave good interviews and personally I wouldn't object to Tom being on the show every week. As for Dug, I still can't believe that the majority of people out there don't have a clue who King's X is.

Tony was shredding fo sho! Wheeeee!!!!!! To this day I still have his stuff on vinyl.

The "whatever happened to..." segment was interesting in that it touched on the latest about Vinnie Vincent. Dude needs to come back and play on TMS.

Here's the article that the boys on TMS brought regarding dead dogs being buried in his backyard and whatnot.

Episode 4: Corey Taylor, Brad Gillis and Jack Blades

Special Guest Bassist: Billy Sheehan

If there ever was a case to be made that this should be a Two-Hour show, this is the episode to do it with. What a fun, fun ride. Corey Taylor (Slipknot) is a very good interview and has a lot to say about everything. Also, very funny dude. And then there's Brad Gillis and Jack Blades from Night Ranger. Very entertaining stories on both their parts. I could listen to those dudes talk about music all day long.

TMS Top 5 Forefathers of Metal was an epic Fail in my eyes. They had their picks all wrong!!!!

TMS Top 5:

1. Black Sabbath
2. Deep Purple
3. Judas Priest
4. Iron Maiden
5. Metallica

My Top 5:

1. Black Sabbath
2. AC/DC
3. KISS
4. Judas Priest
5. Metallica

The Throwdown: Which Is better: AC/DC's Highway To Hell or AC/DC's Back In Black

For years I have been touting Back In Black as the best ever. But within this past year, I have listened to Highway To Hell so much (more so than at any other time it seems) that I can't pick one over the other. So, for me, this is a very rare tie.

Episode 5: Scott Ian, Charlie Benante and Dave "The Snake" Sabo

Special Guest Guitarist: Vinnie Moore

Scott Ian is always fun to hear talk, no matter where he is at. Also good to see Charlie as well. But it was Sabo, who is a great interviewee, stole the show. I've met the dude before, and he is just the same in person as you see on this episode. Fun and animated about whatever he is talking about. Very cool dude. Overall, one of my favorite TMS episodes.

Now onto the other parts of the show....

What the hell are Eddie, Don and Jim thinking in their Top 5 Best New Bands? For starters, they included in their individual list the likes of Buckcherry and System Of A Down. I don't know where they come from, but where I hail from, new bands are not in the range of 5-10 years old. And on top of that, Chickenfoot wasn't even on any of their personal list until a fan shouted it out to them.

TMS Top 5:

1. Black Country Communion
2. Chickenfoot
3. Buckcherry
4. Danko Jones
5. Five Finger Death Punch

My Top 5:

1. Chickenfoot
2.
3.
4.
5.

That's my list. I have no other favorite new bands for the past 2 years other than Chickenfoot. Sue me.

The Throwdown: Which Is The Best Anthrax Album: Among The Living Vs. Spreading The Disease

Personally, I would say Sound of White Noise is the best. But of the two choices, hands down it's Among The Living

Episode 6: Sammy Hagar

Special Guest Guitarist: Alex Skolnick

What a great episode. Dare I say it? Best. Episode. Of. TMS. Evah! Sammy is just a great interview. When you watch and listen to him talk it's like you're just having a one on one conversation with him and yourself. And on top of that, he has a wealth of stories to tell, which he dives into head first on the show regarding his book. They touch up on the VH boys, Montrose and some other stuff that was big news when the book first came out. Fantastic episode.

TMS Top 5 was on who was the Hard Rock Vocalist from the 80's.

TMS Top 5

1. Bruce Dickinson
2. Geoff Tate
3. Axl Rose
4. Sebastian Bach
5. Phil Anselmo

My Top 5

1. Axl Rose
2. Geoff Tate
3. Sebastian Bach
4. Blackie Lawless
5. Bruce Dickinson

The Throwdown: Eddie Van Halen Vs. Joe Satriani in the who is best guitarist.

The crowd picked EVH
I pick JS

Fun fact: That chick that ask Eddie Trunk during Stump The Trunk about naming all 10 Solo Albums of Sammy Hagar...I know her.

Episode 7: Stephen Percy and Ripper Owens

Special Guest Bassist: Billy Sheehan

Ripper Owens is a funny dude and seems really cool. someone you can have a beer with and talk about music all day long. Percy returns to TMS and this time around he was a better and more articulate interviewee. Good stuff all around.

TMS Top 5 Tours

1. KISS Love Gun Tour
2. Guns N Roses / Metallica Tour
3. Judas Priest / Iron Maiden World Wide Blitz Tour
4. AC/DC Black Ice Tour
5. Heaven & Hell, Motörhead, Judas Priest, and Testament Metal Masters Tour

My Top 5

1. KISS Love Gun Tour
2. KISS Reunion Tour
3. Van Halen 1984 Tour
4. Guns N Roses / Metallica Tour
5. Def Leppard Hysteria Tour

The Throwdown: Who's the best Whitesnake Guitarist of all time? John Sykes, Steve Vai or Doug Aldrich

The Panel and audience picked John Sykes.
I picked John Sykes.

This was a no brainer and possibly the easiest throwdown ever on the show. Sykes is the definitive guitarist for Whitesnake and is the reason why Steve Vai as a member didn't work for me. When Eddie stated his reasons why, he said exactly what I have been saying for years about Sykes Vs Vai. Don't get me wrong, I love Vai's playing as everyone that knows me can attest to. But as a member of that band, it did not work and sounded nothing like a true WS album

Episode 8: Mike Portnoy & John Sykes

Special Guest Guitarist: Tony MacAlpine

Wow. Some pretty big news in the formation of a new "Supergroup" with Portnoy and Sykes announcing they are in the studio, writing and demoing songs. From what we get on the show, it's going to be a Trio. They are working with a Bass player, which they would not name. I wonder who? Bah! Spill it already! I'm definitely piqued here. I will be following them closely.

The show as pretty good too with both Sykes and Portnoy giving solid interviews/stories. Mike is turning out to be a hoot with his continued, "random" walk-on's. Props to Tony, who was shredding it up like there was no tomorrow.

TMS Top 5 Hard Rock Drummers

1. Mike Portnoy
2. John Bonham
3. Neil Peart
4. Tommy Lee
5. Brian Tichy

My Top 5

1. John Bonham
2. Neil Peart
3. Mike Portnoy
4. Eric Carr
5. Terry Bozzio

The Throwdown: What's the Best Rush Album of the two: Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures?

The panel was split between the two and the audience chose Permanent Waves by a slight margin.

I chose neither as I don't have a favorite Rush Album.

Episode 9: Rick Nielsen & Graham Bonnet

Special Guest Guitarist: Vinnie Moore

TMS Top 5 Hard Rock / Metal Anthems

1. AC/DC - For Those About To Rock
2. KISS - Rock And Roll All Night
3. Judas Priest - Livin' After Midnight
4. Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It
5. Rainbow - Long Live Rock And Rock

My Top 5

1. KISS - Rock And Roll All Night\
2. AC/DC - For Those About To Rock
3. Twisted Sister - I Wanna Rock
4. Judas Priest - You Got Anothher Things Coming
5. Quite Riot - Cum On Feel The Noize

Honorable Mentions:

Motley Crue - Wild Side
Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me
Helix - Rock You

This was probably the hardest Top 5 for me and certainly the best one they've done on the show because the list of songs is so subjective.

The show itself was ok, just a bit 'off'. Rick had a lot to say. I mean a looooooooot. He is always good for interviews as he has some great stories to tell. But at times, especially on TMS, he was a bit manic going off on tangents. Still entertaining though.

Graham, who I haven't really seen or heard from since his time with Alcatraz back when Steve Vai was still in the band, has aged big time. I didn't even recognize him at all. The only thing that remained the same was the hair. His interview was also all over the place.

Pretty interesting Stump The Trunk segment. We got a marriage proposal and Charlie and Scott from Anthrax did a walk-on.

The Throw Down: Which was the better 70's Rock song: I Want You To Want Me or Rock and Roll All Night.

Rick, Graham, Jim and the audience picked "I Want..." while Eddie and Don went with Rock And Roll

I chose Rock and Roll as well.

Episode 10: Lars Ulrich

Special Guest Guitarist: Alex Skolnick

Out of all the guest spots on guitar this season, I'd have to say that Alex here just absolutely tore it up. That was some of the best playing this season. Sick!!!!!!! More Skolnick!!

What a great season finale with Lars and a host of suprises. They sure went all out to make this episode a very memorable one. This is one that I won't soon forget. Lars was fantastic on the panel with plenty of great stories to tell. I was curious if they would address the whole Napster thing, which they did.

Moving on to the Stump The Trunk segment, we got not 1, not 2, but 3 walk-ons from Chris Jerico, Sammy Hager and Alex Winter. They were all clearly having fun that night. Alex's walk-on was a bit out of left field and one I would NEVER have seen coming, but as soon as I saw him I knew exactly who it was.

TMS Top 5 Instrumentals

1 Rush La Villa - Strangiato
2 Metallica - Orion
3 Iron Maiden - Transylvania
4 Scorpions - Coast To Coast
5 Van Halen - Eruption

My Top 5

1 Joe Satriani - Surfing With The Alien
2. George Lynch - Mr Scary
3 Van Halen - Eruption
4 Ace Frehley - Fractured Mirror
5 Jeff Beck - Beck's Bolero

The Throwdown: Which is better? Kill 'Em All or Ride The Lightning

Lars, Eddie and Jim picked Ride The Lightning. Don went with Kill 'Em All. The audience went with Ride The Lightning.

I chose Metallica: The Little Drummer Boy - A Xmas Special In The Key Of Metal
