The Winery Dogs (Self-Titled) 2013

Holy sh*t! I'm kind of speechless. This is about as close to having an out of body experience listening to a new band in probably 25 years for me. I can't recall ever witnessing, er.....listening to something truly remarkable that I connected with on a visceral way that could become huge and give the music landscape a much needed shot in the arm. After listening to The Winery Dogs Self-Titled debut and coming away with this euphoric feeling and questioning whether or not I just heard one of the best albums I've heard in years, I became very skeptical. There is no way in hell this album was as good as my first pass through this hour long album. So I immediately went right back into listening a second time around and it's even better than the first time.

I sh*t you not, this album is hair raising, goosebumps, boner-pill popping awesome. What's remarkable is that this is "just" a Trio comprising Drum God Mike Portnoy on Skins, 4-finger Virtuoso Billy Sheehan on Bass and Guitar God Richie Kotzen on the 6 String Axe. You would think that anyone going head to head with the likes of Billy and Mike would be knock-out in the first round. Well let me tell you straight up, the album begins and ends with Richie and not in the way you'd expect either. I've known him strictly as a axe slinger since the late 80's and only as a wizard of the fretboard. But listening to him on lead vocals here is a revelation for me and one that took me totally by surprised. This kid can flat out sing. He sounds very much like David Coverdale and the album as a whole sounds like the Whitesnake Album that never was.

I'm winding down my 3rd time around through the album non-stop and it's just blowing me away in a way that I never expected. The biggest question I have isn't so much about the album but in "where the f*ck has Richie been all these years, hiding that voice". If he had been singing the past 20 years, he could have made a huge, lasting legacy. Yes, that's some high praise and I mean every bit of that. As for the album itself, I've never been more hard pressed to pick a fave song. Right now I just can't seem to settle on one, or two, or five. Every song is unique and separates itself from the next one. There are a couple of "power ballads" that just kick so much ass and they don't sound like your typical power ballads from the 80's either. Maybe because here, the songs have some serious weight and balls to them.

Sound-wise, The Winery Dogs is pure classic Hard Rock and the songs are the main focus. I can hear a lot of different influences, the biggest of course being Led Zeppelin and Whitesnake. Not sure if this was intentional or not, but I love it. I also hear other influences that call to mind the 70's heyday. With 3 Gods in one band, the potential is there for each one to more or less step over each other to show off, which can come at the expense of the songs. But they each went out of their way to make sure that the songs themselves hold up on their own. Sure, you get your drum fills by Mike, your bass runs by Billy and tasty solos by Richie, but they all serve a purpose.

Amazing debut. Amazing album. Easily 10 Stars out of 10. I highly and I can't stress enough.....HIGHLY recommend this as a Buy. For me, this is easily the album to beat for 'Best Album Of The Year". I just can't see anything coming out and topping this one by the end of the year. It's just not gonna happen. I will post more later as I digest this more........

Fave Songs:

The Dying

Daddy like!  I am on my phone, so it is very hard to reply properly. But I agree album is hard at first to wrap your brain around because it is so good. Ritchie sings so well and like you said sings like a seasoned pro who's been singing for 30 years plus... the guy is a stud. And that is high praise. He sings like a five star singer and yet no one has ever heard him sing as far as I know. And that's not too look away from his amazing guitar skills which are again 5 star. Throwin Billy on base and Mike on drums you can go back and listen to this album 2010 times and still be blown away buy little things and huge things all of these musicians add.

,again I am on my phone so it's very hard to type a proper review right now I'm using voice typing and I have no clue how this will turn out. The little bit that I heard on YouTube sold me right away and I knew I had to buy the record and check it out.

love your review dude I think you really got into the moment. And I totally agree with free monster musicians one of the maze ing things to point out is the fact that none of them ever overstep the bounds as a team playerthe songs are always the bottom line and the songs are damn good

super glad you like it please borrow it for as long as you like. Sorry my messages are so choppy but it's a lot faster to speak them into my phone right now since I'm not online. The downside is the text comes through a lot choppy depending on what I say and how much I edit  it

This is why I immediately think Winery Dogs is far superior to Mr. Big. When I listen to that group of players doing their thing, it's kind of a gymnastic team of "lookee me....I'm playing super fast". But with Winery Dogs, it's about SONG and the vocals in particular. Richie's voice is so damn good. Bluesy. I'd be shocked if the band doesn't blow up and become huge.

,without that metal show I would have never heard of the album so thank God Richie came on the show and promoted I am still totally blown away by how cool it is to hear Billy, Mike, and Richie on one record they are absolutely amazing together and the combo I honestly feel is better than Black Country Communion

The entire time I was listening to this, all I could think about was TMS and how I plan on revisiting last weeks episode, just so that I can watch it in a much different light now. It will feel TOTALLY different for sure.

I should call up Jim and Don and tell them about the review and how TMS may in fact have created a beast with the band by promoting it.

when I said to you that I thought he was a better singer than Glenn Hughes I actually wasn't kidding. And to me Glenn Hughes is one of the most underrated rock singers ever because he was never looked at as a lead singer. With David Coverdale in front of him it's very hard to see Glenn as a lead vocalist but yet he was. So when joe Bonamassa put him in his band it was a perfect moment for Glenn to shine.  I would hate to disparage one band for a nother so this is not a comparison contest. My point is only that winery dogs is a fantastic band as is Black Country Communion.

So what happened with John Sykes? Why did he leave the band, which of course opened the door for Richie to step in. Thank gawd! Nothing against Skyes, I love his playing and voice as well. But I (the world) would have been deprived of ever hearing Richie sing which would be a shame. I can't believe I am raving about Richie's singing of all things! What the hell!!!!

and just to give Glenn his due he is one of my favorite lead vocalist ever and that is not just lip service. In a lot of ways he was better than David Coverdale as a natural lead singer. Coverdale had a little bit more of the Bluesy  rasp but other than that Glenn probably had consistency and range well over what David could do.   in plain and simple terms Glenn Hughes is an amazing vocalist. So then out of the blue comes Richie. Who knew the son of a b****  could sing so well! !I am really happy that I took a risk buying this record but I have to credit that metal show for putting Richie on.   also I have to thank YouTube for having a few clips for me to check it out. After hearing a few snippets of two songs I immediately went to eBay and bought it from a seller in Japan. This is the new landscape of buying music and it is very important that bands promote for free. Because  collectors will actually go out and purchase the records. It wasn't about hearing a track for free and stealing it. I heard the track for free,  and immediately went out and bought it.  We all love it and are sharing it and now hopefully more people will buy it!

Everything you just said about Glenn, YouTube, Promoting and Buying the album is spot-on.
