I just find it weird that only a "couple" of people have heard the entire new album. And the fact that they are denying Roth was ordered back to rerecord his vocals does raise eyebrows.

Van Halen (Live In Toronto, 1979)

Blast from the way long gone past. This is rare and just went up. I've never seen this one before. Enjoy.

Play the video and listen to the song and then mentally tell yourself if you guess the same song I guessed and THEN look at the spoiler tag to see if you got the same one.

Van Halen 2012 Tour
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWmdE5HSdnA&feature=related

I'm guessing this is the forthcoming video? Or maybe it's just them goofing off for the Tour Promo's. Whatever it is, it's cool to actually see Dave and Eddie together. I don't think it's the actual video. Why ruin it by premiering it without the actual new single to kick everything off? I dunno.

Van Halen - Tattoo

New single and video released today. Although it's nowhere near their biggest and best songs from earlier in their career, Tattoo doesn't suck. I actually like it. It's catchy and I will probably have this playing on a loop tonight as I work. I do think they could have done something a bit more original as far as the video is concerned. It's like they said "hey, let's just do it the same way we did with Jump....but with balloons and confetti".

Hmmmm, not sure I like it. Typically I like the unplugged stuff from hair bands. But dayum, Roth sounded off. Very nasal.

So what's this deluxe set he's talking about? The New album or reissue of an early album.

The Deluxe Edition of the forthcoming album comes with the regular edition, bonus songs and a 4 Song DVD. There might be other stuff that I'm unaware of.

Van Halen (A Different Kind of Truth) 2012

Initially, A Different Kind of Truth was hovering around the 3 1/2 Star rating for me through the first pass at listening to this. But I decided to give it a few more spins to see if there was anything more than just the "oh wow, Van Halen's first album in 14 years and the first with David Lee Roth since 1984" mindset that I, along with pretty much everyone else out there is currently engaged in. The first time through, the album as a whole was kind of underwhelming and I think a lot of that has to do with such high expectations from me as well as consciously or not, comparing it to 1984 since that was the last one and was kinda looking for a "sequel", as unrealistic as that may be.

There were a couple of songs that I immediately dug and liked right away. She's The Women is a great song and very close to vintage VH as you can get. Other songs that I got right away were As Is, Stay Frosty and Big River. Now that I've had a chance to soak this up more, it's starting to really grow on me, and some of the songs that were just lukewarm have started to rise to the top. Outta Space f ucking rocks!!!!

The album isn't perfect by a long shot and there are a couple of reasons why. A) No Michael Anthony. His backing Vocals are sorely missed here. There is no getting around that. Period. B) Tattoo. Originally, I liked the song, but over time it started to wear a bit thin with me and in context of the rest of the album, it feels so alien and out of place. If there was a song that should have been dropped, it is definitely this one. But then again, I could end up coming back around and liking it again. Overtime I can actually see this album going up another half star, but it will never be a 5 Star album to my ears.

Fave Songs: She's The Woman, Blood and Fire, As Is, Honeybabysweetiedoll, The Trouble With Never, Outta Space, Stay Frosty and Big River. I will say that Stay Frosty and Big River get the albums Co-MVP for sure. Stay Frosty is very reminiscent of Happy Trails and Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now). Think along the lines of an awesome mash-up on steroids. The Album Cover is kinda cool. I like it.

Pretty cool... I wonder what's on the other album?

...I use to own Grand Funks 'We're An American Band' Gold Vinyl album. I always thought it was very cool. I didn't play it much, because word was, the vinyl was inferior due to the 'gold' and if played to much it would go bad quicker. Still it was cool to have in my collection.

I've listened to Diver Down 3 times in the last 2 days.  I have almost 2 opinions of the record although they are some 25 years apart.  I remember first getting this album back in the 80's....probably a few months after it first came out.  It was different.  Even as a kid I knew something was unique about this album.  I was strangely drawn to it...and it created somewhat of a landscape in my mind I always enjoyed going to.  I think all albums end up having a personality or attitude we perceive and are drawn to as we go back to it again and again...Diver Down at face value as a kid, was musically diverse with some stuff I probably didn't totally get...but I did love the record for those same exact characteristics.   As I reflect on their albums I've always thought of Women and Children first as kind of a drunk sailor album it's very rebellious and I related to it quite well as a kid.   Van Halen I  is the sound of the 70's hands down...that and Led Zeppelin IV. Fair Warning is a weekend in the Bowery where you might get your ass kicked.  Van Halen II to me was always a love song album or like your first crush, it's sweet, light, and leaves a great feeling in your heart....and 1984 was the "my friends have changed" album..(not all change is bad) but 1984 to me (well beyond the introduction of keyboards) had a noticeable shift....if Van Halen was mom and dad...they weren't quite gelling like they were before....and I could feel the change....the strong structure had gotten more complex and clearly so had their relationship....again not all change is bad...and I'll write more about 1984 in a later post/

anyway....back to diver down now in 2012....I am older, wiser, been around the block not only as a person but a musician and artist.  Diver Down is such a fantastic moment for Van Halen.   It's the cream on the top of a fantastic 4 album run....this was such a natural and easy record or so it sounds.  From Where Have All the Good Times  Gone to Hang Em High, Dancing in the Streets to Little Guitars, Cathedral, Secrets, Big Bad Bill, The Full Bug, and on and on.

just listing the tracks my mind goes to happy places (or happy trails?) seriously....this album is like mind candy and it's like the best backyard barbeque, or wedding reception you've ever been too....just the house band happens to be Van Halen, and even their father at one point jumps on stage to join the boys on the record with Big Bad Bill...and finally as if we hadn't had the best evening of our lives already, we all end with a sing along.  Happy Trails indeed./

It's a moment of magic, it's effortless, it sound so spontaneous and fun....it was the peak (and an unusual one at that) but really it encapsulates everything I think Van Halen was or would be....and that is high praise because it would be very easy to say VHI or really any of the previous records were stronger or had better songs....but this was a moment.  a GREAT moment for one of the greatest party bands there ever will be.

and that's why I give Diver Down 5 stars.

my only criticism and it bugged me as a kid and still bugs me some 30 years later....why are the songs out of order on the back of the record?!!  It seems the careless playful attitude of the record overflowed even onto the back cover, with the song titles just placed there in a random order...for some odd reason I never liked that.

the album although fun....deserved a proper track listing....it's just perplexing why the track order would be any different and it leaves a little question hanging in the air with that decision.

:)

small nit pick...but it's there for me.

great  packaging too...lots of pics, some great live shots on the back...and that stinking and so CALIFORNIA inspired cover with Diving being such a HUGE trend in the early 80's here on the west coast.

:)

and with that...I think I will put it back on for a 4th spin and get back to the party.

!
