I wanted to like A Different Kind of Truth, but then again, I gave up on anything from Van Halen a long time ago. So slooooowly as the news trickled in, I was open to new stuff. I had imagined some brand new innovative stuff, but I was also open to them recreating the early sound (which I heard rumors of their direction).

So after several more listens I pretty much dislike A Different Kind of Truth. I’m not going to go through each song, but as a whole, A Different Kind of Truth becomes a wall of sound. The headache inducing sound boyinblack80 talked about. Eddie is shredding his best ever, but unfortunately I hate shredding… especially across a whole album. It does sound like a Satriani just going medieval on the frets. And I think **** Van Halen fans will just love this coming from Eddie.

Roth is OK, he’s not terrible, but his distinctive sound has lost some of its magic. A small nit is the overuse of Roth talking in several of the songs.

I think the real killer for me is I could not find a single song with a hook here. Where is the chorus? Where are the harmonies? Oh, there are some harmonies, but dayum, IMO, they suck. Wolfie is no Anthony.

A positive perspective is this is some of the best rawest stuff to come out in a long time and is diametrically opposite of the freaking crappy dredge that comes out of the pop world. And for those folks that like to listen to this harder, edgier Van Halen, that’s great. It’s just not for me.

I'm good. No hug needed.

There's plenty of great music out there for me to discover.

I am curious to see what the band can do with newer material that doesn't rely on songs that are 35 years old. The question is whether they can get there before the inevitable self destruction.

Van Halen - She's The Woman

Sheesh! I'm just now finding this video? It was released back in April. They really need to do a better job of letting people know when new stuff is out.

This was the Demo that Gene Simmons produced for the band when they were still unknown and unsigned back in 1976.

Q&A: David Lee Roth Vents About Van Halen's Future

Very interesting read. I am both shocked and not surprised one bit that Dave and Ed have yet to get together and write new songs. Sheesh! Get your sh*t together for f*cks sake! F*CK!!

I found this completely predictable... The course it's taken. What I find odd is Roth's puzzlement about the current outcome. Denial? Horse blinders?

Who the hell knows what goes on in that head of his. When he was a paramedic or doing that Bluegrass crap, he still had it in his head that he was the bomb. Self delusion all the way.

Dave is like me and you can ask Chip about this.  I never rest on my laurels....although VH obviously is a MUCH bigger entity...but I have NO problem going back to a small club , speakeasy or 30 seater(or going online totally anonymous)  to cut my teeth as it were with my art....you play for the people.

"Alex and I have been begging to become part of that, and Glastonbury and Reading and Hyde Park. We keep being shuttled into the heavy metal world, and that's a very exclusive neighborhood, but here we are – we're back knocking on the doors begging for Bonnaroo and begging for Lollapalooza and Coachella, not even as an advancement of career, but there's a whole new audience who doesn't know and doesn't give a **** about Van Halen, and that's exactly the best audience to sharpen your spirit on. That will compel you to the very best that you have. I can't wait for those opportunities and wish us well. We've been asking for those shows since I've gotten back with the band six years ago, and I'll be very curious to see where we wind up come next season.

"
I feel bad for dave...seems like he's got the right frame of mind and maybe the other parties don't/  it's a band and a band has got to play gigs...it's so simple and so far from EVH's reality//

KEY words.

"sharpen your spirit on"

art comes from inside...it's not about numbers or hits on youtube...Dave wants the band to gel.....that's the key thing to connect....most people would never understand the importance of that...but there's only 12 bands and about 48 people in the world who've lived in the last 50 years that would/ is (the who, the stones, VH, guns and roses, metallica, the beatles , led zeppelin, etc)

What I take from the interview and what we have always talked about is Eddie is trying to retain control of the band. The last thing he wants to do is let Dave "run the ship" because once he does that, he will NOT be able to reign him back in and therein lays the problem that could derail the band...again. But at the same time, Eddie's constant micromanaging is already going to sink the ship regardless. So, he might as well be a little more open to the possibility of new gigs and new fans. If Alex is on board with this, I have to ask how much further he is willing to put up with Eddie's drama, in spite of them being brothers.
