So the other night, the afternoon/evening is beautiful and I'm washing the cars cranking out some old favorites of Lake and Starcastle. If you not familiar with either, they have elements of prog rock and at times sound like Yes. Their songs while very mutli-layered, contain amazing writing, excellent vocals and wonderful harmonization. I hate to talk about them both in the same sentence, because while they have similarities, they are distinctly different. Starcastle using keyboards to greater length. They both had great successes, but it was pretty fleeting.

Soundtracks should not be dismissed, as Chip points out in the 500 thread.

So watching Contraband the other night, it starts off in a honky tonk type bar with Don't Break the Needle by J Roddy Walston and the Business playing in the background. Caught my attention. Definitely Boogie Woogie on steroids. Or a Georgia Satellites wanna be? I don't know but I liked it.

Another absolutely great song from a soundtrack and they actually perform it in the movie is Amphetamine in the Movie Band Slam. Remind me of something like Joan Jett or Lita Ford with Pat Benetar thrown in. If, er when, I get my band together, this song will be in the set .

Not 'If', but how soon can you start up a band. Time's a-wastin' my friend. I have a van to lug your gear around from gig to gig.

The Ultimate Bee Gees

I am so torn when it comes to the Bee Gees. Way back when I was just a sperm, I use to listen to some of the early stuff like Lonely Days and How Do Mend a Broken Heart and then a little later, Jive Talkin. This was all pre-the-boys-getting-vice-grips-on-the-nads singing. So

Ultimate has it all. From the early days through Saturday Night Fever and much more beyond. They strangely do not put the song in chronological order. Very odd. They start of with major hits from the movie, then through in a 70's hit. Very, very different music and singing. Anyways, I got it to rip off the best copy from the early years.

My bad.... they used the vice grips in the Jive Talkin years

Jefferson Airplane ::: Jefferson Starship ::: Starship ::: HITS

While I like something out of each generation of Starship, this HITS CD does miss a few. Some I've never heard of. But for the most part, I like this package best out of all the variety of Greatest Hits available.

Love is a Four Letter Word - Jason Mraz

I've been a fan of his music from the beginning. His wordplay and music style is unique, infectious and just a blast to listen to.

I was excited about the new release from Jason Mraz. I did read reviews before I put it in and was taken back that people were saying this is not typical of his past. It was more mellow.

Well, they were all right. This is one slow @ss album. A little to slow for my taste. Maybe not my taste, but not what I want from Mr. A-Z.
This is still a superbly written and recorded album and outshines most crap that comes out today. But... this album would put me to sleep. And IMO, a couple of songs come ridiculously close to lounge or elevator music. Instead of the great instrumentation with the basic guitar, percussion and keyboards, Mraz incorporates strings and orchestra at times.

I guess an argument could be made, do you want to hear the same formula of past success or do you want something different? I listened to Love Is A Four Letter Word 4 times in a row, to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I've concluded, I really only like three songs off the entire album. The Freedom Song, Frank D. Fixer and The World As I See It. The rest just fade for me.
