These guys are passing through town. Never heard of them until I read good reviews in our local 'scene' newspaper.

I really like what I'm hearing here. I do understand the comparisons to Amy Winehouse

Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics

Everywhere At Once - Paul Allen And The Underthinkers

Yes, that Paul Allen from Microsoft. With a lot of help from heavy hitting friends (Ann & Nancy Wilson, Joe Walsh, Chrissie Hynde, Derek Trucks and others) Mr. Allen puts a CD of various, but mostly blues tunes. All recorded very well and strong band, but nothing that really stands out. It is like it sounds, going in a variety of directions with guest artists performing so-so songs.

I do like Divine (vocals by Amy Keys) enough to record it. The rest were just not strong enough. Paul Allen probably pulled out all the stops and hired the best. Recording, performing, writing, etc.

If you like the blues, you just might give this a listen and even more so, enjoy it quite a bit.

Keith Urban: Livin' Right Now

My bandmate and I are trading Concert DVD’s. I just recently gave him Lindsey Buckingham and Carlos Santana.
He in turn gave me a few. Last night I started to watch Keith Urban: Livin' Right Now. Let me start off by saying I only know of Keith Urban by name. And honestly, I have been actively avoiding anything to do with ‘country’ music.

I started up the DVD with the mindset…. Thrill Me. Well the first of many surprises was to hear Keith talk an Australian accent. Now wait, I’m about to listen to country music… right? With a small intro, the concert kicks into gear. Sparse stage and some pretty fine backing musicians. Just solid playing.

Then I was absolutely blown away at Urban’s guitar chops. Holy crap batman, he can play. Not just great rhythm guitar, but a mean ass lead. And he sings… well… while shredding the guitar.

This is not country. The only thing I heard was the country twang in his voice. Otherwise this is Rock/Pop gold.

This is from a concert in 2005 and it looked and sounded great. The way a concert should be recorded. Nice close-ups. Thoughtful editing for the viewing fan.

I’m a believer. I’ll admit when I see talent… country or not. I will definitely keep his music in my radar.

Here’s one of the songs off the DVD. You Won. I just love the arrangement.

You know my disdain for country music. I was very reluctant to even try out Nashville because of it. But to my surprise, I love the series and more importantly, the music kicks ass (for the most part). But it's not because its "country" though. Most of the songs are either more Rock and Roll for the uptempo songs and the softer acoustic songs are more blues based than anything else. When they do give us country songs on the show, I still cringe. Not my taste. With all that said, I am willing to give Urban a chance based on your recommendation. If I can watch a show about country, I think I can do the same here. Will see if Library has a copy.

Agree. I'm on a fine line when it comes to country. I do cringe with the twang and especially the stupid subject of a song... red cup, trucks) But his guitar chops nailed it for me. He's just not singing and strummin', the guy is just a pleasure to watch and listen too. Especially this live performance. (So much, I'm going to talk to the guys about what makes a great performance for viewers. I think it's a ton of things like good material, talent, presence, professionalism, sound, lighting, etc. )

I may hate his studio stuff... I dunno. I don't even know what his hits are. I'm crossing my fingers.

Irons in the Fire – Redlight King

Irons in the Fire is the sophomore follow up to Something for the Pain. I think the planets were aligned when I discovered Redlight King. They are heavy grunge rock band at times immersed in Hip-hop. It’s definitely a unique sound, but I pretty much liked all of Something for the Pain.

I was excited to hear about the follow-up. Always on the outlook for something more than the usual crap being put out.
Irons in the Fire is pretty much a carbon copy formula. Kind of like Nickelback. Found a sound and use it for every song. Unfortunately, most of the songs are mediocre at best. I wound up only ripping one song off this collection. Born to Rise. Irons in the Fire is still a well produced song, but for me it would be just a repeat of what I already own. I’ll pass on it, but would recommend if you’re looking for new material.

Thoughts on Lorde?

Leaning towards Popish. I kind of hear a mix of Adele, Katy Perry and then some various female artists. It's the unique song writing and instruments that mesh well with her semi-unique voice. As long as she doesn't go all pop, she could be really an artist to watch.

She has a style... notice the similarities.

Here's an interesting cover of that song.

Lorde: Royals- Violin and Guitar Cover by David Wong and Bryan Mulholland

And checking out some more Hip-Hop Violin (which I've liked for a while), I found this awesome performer (who apparently's been all over TV in the last few days, but of course I wouldn't know that) named Lindsey Sterling.

And she did a cool cover too

Party Rock Anthem -Violinists can shuffle too

But she also did some cool original songs

Did not care to much for the Hip-Hop Violin (two words I'd never thought I'd say together.... ever), but I really liked the other video's.

Even the violin version of Royals... very cool stuff.

Diving Board - Elton John

I've been a fan of Elton's since he first started. Ya, I'm that old. Anyway, over time, I've moved onto other things as he has.

With his latest release, I thought I'd give it a listen because the reviews say he's getting back to his beginnings. Well ya and no.

His latest project is bare bones. Keyboard, drums and guitar. This is a very stripped down set of songs and to me all sound the same after the listening to the first few. I know I went through it quickly... once, but there was not one song that sucked me in.

I'm not going to rate it. It just did nothing for me, despite it getting excellent reviews. He's coming through town next month but I've seen him so much and really don't want to see a concert of his bare bones stuff.

Sammy Hagar & Friends

Sammy’s recent latest effort is a mixed bag of styles, writing and guest artist helping out. I do applaud Sammy for treading new waters. I am not a fan of Sammy, cause I just don’t care for, IMO, his constant screaming a song.  I do really like a handful of his songs… a lot. Montrose, Van Halen and a couple here and there solo stuff.

With that being said, I did walk from this album liking Winding Down. It’s not slam you over the head with noise, but has some nice slide steel guitar to make it stand out.

With all the talent gathered on this album (Featured Guest Appearances: Kid Rock, Neal Schon (Santana, Journey, HSAS), Joe Satriani, Chad Smith, Michael Anthony (ex-Van Halen, Chickenfoot)), Taj Mahal, Ronnie Dunn (Brooks & Dunn), Toby Keith, Nancy Wilson (Heart), Bill Church & Denny Carmassi (Montrose)), I didn't hear much of it. Sammy's voice and style just dominate.

The rest did very little for me. Especially his rendition of some of the classics. Magaritaville and Ramblin’ Gamblin Man absolutely suck.

If you’re expecting anything related to Van Halen, forget it. If you’re big fan of Sammy, then you might like this quite a bit. As I said, I'm not a fan, so take my review with a grain of salt.
