Muse - The 2nd Law

Putumayo Presents Latin Beats

Yea, first time I've heard Hispanic Rap. Actually Chocolate by Profetas is the best thing on there.

Danger Mouse - Rome

Heard Two Against One during 2 Guns. Liked it enough to check this out.

Pharrell Williams - Happy

Watching Despicable Me 2, one song stuck out and it was Happy by Pharrel Williams. It has that soulful popish feel, similar to Bruno Mars and a variety of the new Neo Soul artists out today.

The scene where this was used was pretty cool. Gru feels good because of his new relationship with Lucy. Very infectious.

Pharrell Williams is apparently one of those multi-talented individuals getting into everything. Notice the nuance of his presence in Daft Punk's current hit Get Lucky

The B itch is Back - Lita Ford

Lita Ford's latest is a live set from L.A.
I think you have to be a die hard fan to like this album. I am not. There is enough wrong with this album to never listen to it again or recommend it.

This is not a horrible recording, but it lacks in in most everything to want to listen to it.

First, the audio recording could have been sooooo much better. Despite hearing all the instruments clearly, for some reason the Bass is overpowering. A couple of songs are just unbalanced. One song in particular, I thought it was my player, but what I figured out is Lita Ford must have leaned back and from side to side while singing. The volume is all over the place.

While I don't know her catalog that well, most of these songs meant nothing to me. Her leading off with Elton John tune of The **** Is Back is simply horrible. The rest of the songs sound very 'garage band' like. Maybe that's the sound she was going for, but I found it frustrating to listen to. My expectations are very high. I expect quality and I would have thought such a seasoned musician like Ford would have matured and created something cleaner.

Didn't even know this was out. Sucks about the quality of the mix which is something I'm seeing more and more these days. Not sure why the sudden uptick of poor producing these days.

I 'hear' this time and time again. I come to realize how important the producer's job is. He is outside of the band, but in the band to know good sound, good mix, good writing, instrumentation, etc. I speak of a "Good" producer.

I just imagine a bad producer is at the wheel on these bad sounding recordings. It maybe Lita Ford herself making the judgement calls. Dunno.

But like I said, I'm use to very well produced projects. That's what I like. The old garage band, dirty, slightly messy sound was the 80's. I don't like that. Some people do. Hell, some people love vinyl and the click and pops. That's reminiscing. That's not for me.

I think I mentioned watching P!nk, how bad the sound was. It was in a indoor arena, thus mudding up the sound. And on the flip side, I watch Muse Live at Rome and completely blown away at the clarity of the sound.

I loves me Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult.... because their sound recordings are clean. Live they may suck, because they think volume is killer. Yea, right.

Surprisingly... No

She does sing a little Come By Here (Kumbayah) with Josh Gad in a scene at the end.

I'm way overdue to go through these posts and hear what I've been missing.  But in the meantime, here's what's in my ears:

George Thorogood & The Destoyers – Live in Montreux 2013
George Thorogood is one of those artists (Black Sabbath, AC/DC) where I love their stuff, but can only tolerate a few songs at a time. After that, it just grates on me. I picked this up in hopes to maybe discover something new. I did not, except for extended versions of some songs. It was OK, what I listened to, but offers nothing new

Lindsey Stirling
 – Well, you guys introduced me to this young artist with rather eye opening take on violin composed music in a very contemporary fold. I recently got a chance to hear her premiere self-titled album. My take… it’s OK. In a nutshell it all sounds the same. This is not a bad thing, because I feel this way about classic Jazz in general. I’m sure it’s good for those who love it, but to my untrained ears, it’s all the same. But if you are really into her sound, then you will love the album. I found a song or two I think stood out… just a little.

I imagine there is a time and place to listen to her music. I would think she would be amazing to watch.
