Living Like a Runaway - Lita Ford

Listening to this the first time, I'm unimpressed. In the sense I was expecting more from Lita Ford. It's recorded beautifully, and in some sense it sounds like she never left the 80's. Which for some people that might be what they want an expect. Not me. There's plenty of hair band type sound out there.

I did pick out The Mask right away as something I might like more. The beginning and ending is unique, and then segues into the classic guitar chunka chunka riff, but here the Mask sounds like Heart. It's got some great voice work, good lyrics and chugs along quite nicely.

So I need a couple more listens to see if anything more stands out. I was really expecting the title song to be good, but IMO, it so far is the weakest. I almost get the feeling she thought of this great title connection to her past, now lets write some lyrics and music. Not so much.

A Retrospective - Pink Martini

I watched Pink Martini perform a few months back on one show and was rather intrigued. I liked what I heard. I don't remember what it was, but it was nothing like I heard before. A mixture of world music, sung in another language, with a jazzy pop sound. Kind of Cirque Du Soliel if you will.

This retrospective is pretty vast. It's hard to label them or explain what their music is. It's eclectic. I don't like it all, but some songs just sound great.

For instance, their performance of Una Notte a Napoli is eclectic...

but Hey Eugene is pure pop...

Shape Shifter - Santana

Primarily an instrumental album, I think one song has some lyrics, this is the old classic Santana. The early years of just solid Latin Rock spreading it's wings. Nothing really memorable... but dependable. If you like old Santana, every song here will be enjoyable to some degree. Some blues, ballads and signature solo guitar work.

Nothing to write home about. Some great background music.

Clockwork Angels - Rush

I was reading some reviews before I listened to this. I really try to weed out the fanatic fan and get a reasonable review. What I discovered was, that some of these folks follow Neil Peart in his writing and write some amazing reviews. Fun reviews. But after listening to the album, I've come to find they just love Rush.

I like Rush... a lot. But I'm more on their hits. I don't listen to albums unless it's some of the more established ones like 2112.

I found Clockwork Angels very good. I didn't find it incredibly different than anything else in their catalog. Maybe a little harder edge like in the early years, but nothing stood out.

I'll listen to it some more and try to find those songs I really want to keep.

If you like Rush, thing about checking it out. It's good.

I try to be as objective about any singer or band I listen too, especially if I'm going to do a reveiw. I've been openly critical of KISS in that not everything they do is a masterpiece. If I can be honest rating my all time favorite band, I think the reviews as a whole will hold more water and mean something. I have issues with people that just bend over and take it in the ass when new stuff comes out and they get amazing reviews from fans.

I am not a believer that  h a r d c o r e  fans should be compelled to just automatically give out A pluses and 10 Star ratings just because the product exist. So, props to you Mac for telling it like it is.

Queen's Greatest Hits III

When this came out I was just so into Queen and wanted the full 3 greatest hits. I remember listening to it the first time and thought WTF. This was scrapping the bottom of the barrel for material.

Well, many many years have passed since I first listened to it. I've changed and appreciate the material on here. The tribute songs by Elton and George Michael, the solo opera stuff by Freddie. It's all good.
