"Weird Al" Yankovic - Tacky

I can't seem to get his other video 'Tacky' (Parody of Pharrell Williams Happy) anywhere.

Ahem.

G I R L – Pharrell Williams
1 star for Happy

Aw heck, why not give Pharrell a shot. Bruno Mars did it, maybe I’ll hear some fresh quality stuff here. Besides, when I first heard Happy in Despicable Me 2, I liked it immediately and knew it would be a hit. But now I’m sick of it.

But the album G I R L is a huge disappointment. Not one song except Happy sounds fresh. In fact, 3 of the songs start exactly like Happy with the Ooom, Ooom, Ooom, Ooom, Ooom, Snap beginning.

I thought G I R L lacked any kind of freshness or originality. A huge disappointment. I was expecting at the very least a couple of gems from this. Not so.

9 Dead Alive – Rodrigo y Gabriela

I’ve enjoyed this duo on and off over the years. I’m sure a lot of it has to do with my frame of mind. They typically play aggressive flamenco, with their roots firmly grounded in heavy metal. These guys I feel are far more entertaining watching them, yet in the right listening area, their music is fun.

9 Dead Alive comes off more repetitive than I expected.

Or maybe it’s a situation like my thoughts on George Thorogood or AC/DC. When they come on, I love ‘em. But after a few songs… that’s enough.

Yes, I was pretty tired of the same sound within the first few songs. Excellent playing, just too much of good thing perhaps.

I can't remember the last new album I listened to from start to finish. I don't know why or what it is. But there has been a huge disconnect for me and new music lately. There really hasn't been anything on radio or TV lately that has just grabbed me by the balls and forced me to go down and check it out (either from the Library or Secondhand store with listening stations). The music I have been filling up on for the past year has been revisiting my old albums or watching/listening to bootleg concerts on YouTube.

I subscribe to a couple bands and musicians on Youtube but I have't heard anything new in a while (it does take a good long while to come out with songs and albums).  We are kind of in the post-album age, aren't we?  It's all about the singles now.

I will say that I do depend on you guys to clue me in to the newest, hippest stuff.

'Post-album age'. Why? Why? Why? Bring back the 70's and 80's!! You know, if Vinyl never went away in the first place, we wouldn't even be having this discussion right now. Buying an albums worth of songs was also about buying the package too.....the artwork on the cover, and hopefully some cool extras on the inside. If you look at the trajectory of the music industry format to distribute music.....everything has gotten smaller and smaller until one day.....there was no need for packaging at all.

Vinyl>8 Track>Cassette>CD>MP3>Cloud

Sigh.

Mac has been really good and finding gems for as long as I've known him. He has turned me on to plenty of different bands and singers that I would never known about. He's the man you want to pay attention when it comes to new stuff. As I said a few post earlier with him, there hasn't been anything new or good that I've managed to discover on my own, save for this, which I'm STILL listening to which is amazing for me that I haven't gotten sick of yet.

High Road - Night Ranger

I'm giving Night Ranger's latest studio project a listen. Unfortunately, it's not doing much for me. The selections are a mix from some very hard to some rather mellow (Sister Christian sound alike). I'll give this another listen sometime.

My only take away thus far is an outstanding unplugged acoustic duet L.A. No Name

Chef - Various Artists

I saw Chef at the theaters and talk briefly about it here.

I knew leaving the theater I had to get the soundtrack. The music is up, happy, international and just perfect for a summer outside.

Mutineers - David Gray

I like David Gray because of his unique voice and interesting writing. From the few albums I've listened to including Mutineers, either Gray knocks it out of the park and captures my attention... or the song is just OK. I've yet to hear anything bad by him.

I've got a number of songs I'll be pealing from this project.

Title track Mutineers

Lullaby and the Ceaseless Roar - Robert Plant

I picked this brand new release to see what Plant is doing of late. I didn't care for his previous work with Band of Joy and Alison Krauss. This new project while interesting, just didn't make me think must have. The album has a definite sound, one that I'm having a hard time categorizing. It reminds me a lot of the 3rd Led Zeppelin album due to it's very acoustic nature with some searing guitar here and there. It's still far superior to most current music being released. I might revisit this and it might grow on me.
