Achtung Baby – U2

I have never given much time to U2. I do like some of their hits, but in a passive way. I never felt the need to check them out and see what they are about… until now. I’ve seen the new major enhancements to some U2 projects and people saying blah, blah, blah is the pinnacle of their work. So I decided to check out Achtung Baby.

Not impressed. There is not that magic. That connection. I am not saying they are a bad band. I’m just saying I don’t hear what I really like in other bands. They don't move me. It just happens that way sometimes. So I’m not going to rate it. I’m biased and that would not be fair or logical. Why listen to me when I don’t particularly care for them.

You need to start at the top with U2's masterpiece, The Joshua Tree. This is completely different in style and tone to that of Achtung Baby, which was when they were trying to reinvent themselves.

Thanks, but I've heard enough.

Pat Benatar - Ultimate Collection (Patricia Mae Andrzejewski)

I probably haven't listened to Benatar for 10+ years at the very least. I like her stuff, it just seems she faded into the background. This woman is truly a rocker. Her small body with the giant voice puts her into a class by herself. Her husband,Giraldo,  is credited for the composing of just about every song.

This is a great collection. It does require 2 CD's because her catalog of hits is that big. There were only a couple of songs I was not familiar with. The downside, this definitely places me in the 80's mindset. It some respects that cool, but in other respects, it does sound dated. Drum machines, certain keyboard and guitar styles of that time.

Bottom line, give this a listen... Just fantastic stuff.

The Essential Guess Who

I'm giving this only 2-1/2 stars because I think they are pushing the hits here. I've been a fan forever and think Burton Cummings voice is so unique to the rock world. His contributions and song writing are hit and miss. The hits are fantastic. The misses are just so-so. And this 2 CD collection apparently anything that had some notice, whether good or bad. I did not recognize about 1/3 to 1/2 the collection. I guess they were hits in their home country of Canada.

There is nothing new here, but just a chance to hear the great songs they've made over the years including the very beginning. Yea, that was not all that great.

I'd recommend a single disc with all their hits, which there are plenty.

Pat Benatar - Ultimate Collection

I wonder how much different this Ultimate Collection is from the original Set that I have which also was a 2-CD Set. Maybe this is the same Set but with a new Cover?

Might be the very similar. I noticed several songs labled as 1999 Remastered and some radio edit  and single edit editions.

Adele - Live at the Royal Albert Hall

I got the DVD/CD set and have not watched the concert yet. But I'm here to tell you the audio CD is amazing. The clarity of a live event is perfect. The orchestra comes through balanced and not over bearing. The band is spot on and the more subdued moments of just her and guitar feels so amazingly there with you. Adele voice is without saying... perfect. A beautiful, beautiful recording. Can't wait to watch the concert.

Kansas - Boxed Set

I’ve had this box set ever since it came out years ago. I was a fanatic at that time. Listening to this box set again and I realize I’ve honed down my fanaticism to focus more on ‘good’ songs. This box set has some crap in it. Some were never hits. Some recorded live and sound like crap and alt versions of songs. Altogether this wastes my time with quite a few songs I do not want to listen too. I’m going to sell this and then hunt down the best versions of the best songs for my collection

Yes - Yessong

Another ‘box set’ that has hits and misses. And the misses here include songs that are missing. I grew up with Yes and I’ve enjoyed most of what they put out. This is a nice collection but not perfect. I again will have to bypass this one and search out a more customized collection of my fav’s.

Amy Winehouse - Lioness: Hidden Treasures

I’ve only listened to this once and it delivers pretty much what I was expecting. It is very good. While I playing the songs, I was reading, from the booklet, the short stories associated with each song. It was a bitter sweet feeling. I don’t know if today’s digital world, if things like the booklet are received. While it like DVD extras, they are nice to have. The whole backstory of the album is written in there by Mark Ronson.

Very good songs with passion that Winehouse brought to the studio, but it’s sad to think that she never fully realized her goals.
