Oh Joy, I can hardly wait. :-\

Adam Sandler Signs 4-Film Deal With Netflix

Quote
The comedy actor will star and produce in four feature films exclusively for the streaming service, Netflix announced -- bypassing the traditional movie distribution process.

“People love Adam’s films on Netflix and often watch them again and again. His appeal spans across viewers of all ages -- everybody has a favorite movie, everyone has a favorite line -- not just in the U.S. but all over the world,” Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said in a news release announcing the deal.

Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions will work alongside Netflix on the four films, according to the statement.

Sandler, 48, is known for comedies such as “Happy Gilmore,” “Billy Madison,” “The Wedding Singer” and “Grown Ups.” More serious efforts include “Punch-Drunk Love” and “Reign Over Me.” Sandler’s films have earned more than $2 billion at the box office.

His latest release, “Blended,” co-starring Drew Barrymore, was panned by critics and struggled in its opening over Memorial Day weekend. But, according to Box Office Mojo, it’s taken in more than $125 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $40 million.

Earlier this week, Netflix announced its first movie release, a sequel to the 2000 hit “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” set for August 2015 that will also appear in Imax theaters. Netflix has also made a mark in original television with series such as “House of Cards” and “Orange Is the New Black.”

I mentioned this on the "What Are You Looking Forward To?" thread, since it seems more like movie news than TV news, but I've been waiting for this.  Combine the fact that Netflix has a crummy movie selection with the fact that HBO has half the movies coming out until the year 2020, and that blanket licensing agreements are getting more expensive, it totally makes sense for Netflix to make their own flicks.  It was just a matter of crunching the numbers.  They'll have to play some serious movie moneyball to close that gap and give us TONS of quality flicks.  And hey, why not Adam Sandler?  Let him be the crash test dummy, he'll be fine if it all doesn't work out.  But if it does, that'll be great.

And until they develop their own strong in-house brand, they need someone who does repeat business.  The benefit of doing TV shows and stand-up specials is that they drive repeat business, so for now what they need IS someone who puts out multiple movies of equal quality.  keep the subscribers waiting for the next flick.

It is an interesting dynamic, I mean from a business sense. I mean testing the waters with him I would think would be hard numbers to crunch.

He does bring in the bucks for some of the sh*tiest movies in history. But who is his fan base? Are they The type to subscribe to Netflix?

I just found it so odd, Netflix would start with him.

I would agree that Adam is an odd choice to launch a new venture like this. He does make a ton of money, but his target audience I would think is even smaller now as fans that grew up with him even just a few years ago would have "moved on" from his brand of comedy by now. So, in the interest of this particular topic of discussion, if you were running Netflix, who would you choose instead as the one to launch with?

They picked Adam because his movies do very well on Netflix across all territories, foreign and domestic.  AND there's a consistent quality to his flicks.  I'm actually having trouble thinking of anyone else who has that.  I mean, Rogen and co do all right, but do they have universal appeal?  I don't know?  Are their movies all the same?  Not at all.  Are they as famous?  Doubt it.  They're popular, yeah, but like it or not, Adam Sandler is a movie star AND his own personal brand.  Adam Sandler is in Adam Sandler movies.  You put out a mailer/poster/ad/whatever with Sandler's face and the Netflix logo together, your mind immediately thinks "Netflix has Adam Sandler films."  You put Seth Rogen, James Franco, Russell Brand, you think "Netflix has a movie WITH Rogen, Franco, whatever, or a show, or something."  Less clear.  Simple marketing.

Same thing with the original series, the first series Netflix did was Lilyhammer, and the marketing was so-and-so.  Then they got Kevin Spacey in House Of Cards.  Oh nuts.  We all love evil Kevin Spacey, they put him up on the Lincoln Memorial chair with the blood tricking from his hands, the upside down flag (which, we all know, is a distress signal) and tell people there's going to be thirteen HOURS of this?  Totally effective.

They did a big marketing blitz for Arrested Development because there was a demand for ten years for a new season, of course they exploited it.  But Orange Is The New Black?  Trailer Park Boys?  Derek?  Limited audience appeal, so limited advertising, but the quality rose to the surface.  So even though all we're hearing about is Sandler and Tiger, there's gonna be other stuff down the pipeline.  This is just the stuff they can trumpet... and let other people talk about (how many articles, tweets, blog posts, message board things like this have there already been?  We're doing Netflix's marketing for them!)

Article: Netflix may have an AMC problem ... key problem is that Netflix hasn't had a hit show in two years.  Interesting little read.

Nefflix will bounce back as it gets its footing in more and more homes. There is still a huge demographic out there that doesn't rely on the Internet for their entertainment and are still set in their ways and watch TV the same way they have always done their entire lives. It will be a slow process in getting those people to move into the future, which is already here. It's just convincing them to do so that is the problem. You poll the same people, and I guarantee you that they have never heard of House of Cards, Orange is the new Black or Marco Polo.

I read that article the other day too. I found it very interesting. I think at a high level, lots of people would love to cut the cord and let Netflix fly with the eagles. But like the article say, Netflix has a lot of material from other studios that is making it successful.

I’m pretty sure we need competition in the this business to keep it alive, creative, evolutionary. Some are predicting network stations will be obsolete in 15 years or less. Well, a lot has to happen and fall in the right place at the right time for it to work. I think it’s still in it’s infancy and just the tip of change. I imagine the owners of this studio’s (Netflix, CBS, HBO, etc) are having daily meetings on the wave of consumer change in tastes. I would hope so at the very least. If any studio has got their head in the sand because of confidence, arrogance, stupidity… they will NOT survive

Amazon Abandons Plans For Chris Carter’s ‘The After’

Well, this sucks. I wonder if a Network, possibly FOX given their previous relationship together on The X-Files, would consider picking this up. Hate to see this fail before it even gets a legit shot at an audience.
