Dukes of Septemberhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83IX8iKd_28With Donald Fagen, Mike McDonald and Boz Scaggs
While a big fan of Steely Dan, but not ever seeing them live, I figured I was at least following their careers with tours and projects. Guess Not. I had never heard of this tour until this DVD release.
I’m torn going into this. I’m uber excited to hear any Steely Dan material. And on the opposite end, I detest Mike McDonald. I don’t like his music. I don’t like his voice. Boz Scaggs had less than a handful of hits and they are included here. So about a 3rd of the songs are throwaway’s to me. I’ve never heard them and none caught my interest.
The band is tight. Jon Herington (guitar) does an amazing job covering all styles of music. His covering Steely Dan leads is top notch. As is Michael White percussion. In fact, I think he upgrades some of the songs quite nicely. The rest of the band and singers excel as well. The audio captures everything in a full and balanced level. Crank this mutha up
The video is pristine. Nice slow camera movements. The editing could have been better. At times a little too much quick change.
I think the performance was a little too chaotic. Jumping from the 3 artists material really didn’t have cohesion.
In the end, I’m glad I got to see it, but have no desire to own to watch over.
