Disney Buys Lucasfilms
« on: October 30, 2012, 07:31:09 pm »

Quote
A decade since George Lucas said "Star Wars" was finished on the big screen, a new trilogy under new ownership is destined for theaters after The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it was buying Lucasfilm Ltd. from him for $4.05 billion.
The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The trilogy will continue the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi," the third film released and the sixth in the saga. After that, Disney plans a new "Star Wars" movie every two or three years. Lucas will serve as creative consultant in the new movies.

Where did this come from? I didn't even have a clue this was going down. Either my head was buried so far in the ground, or I just kept missing 'talk' about this. So, I guess with this now official, George Lucas can no longer **** and re-**** Star Wars over and over for a quick buck.

Hmmmm, I was reading a little that Lucas may be a consultant.

I too had not heard anything until today.

Read the fine print, Disney also acquired the Indiana Jones franchise, which means we will be seeing more, albeit with a different actor in the role. I'm okay with this if they can get back to basics and ground it in reality and not have Indy On Mars or something.

They're more interested in Star Wars than Indy, especially since the sour taste of the last Indy is still stinging in our mouths.

Honestly, I'm not a big Star Wars fan, but honestly I would much rather they reboot the universe Star Wars-style (but without time travel) because the last forty years have made the SW universe so dense that you're going to run into a bunch of complications... besides, having NO clue what the new Star Wars could be (as opposed to easily knowing the prequel trilogy, everything was just shitty permutations of established stuff).  Besides, it's kind of a broken, bent old horse and we need to start rooting for its' colt.

I'm actually the opposite. I would rather get Indy over Star Wars for a lot of reasons, but namely because SW has run it's course of overexposure with a Captial O. Yes, Indy 4 left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, but on the flip side, the last 3 Star Wars movies was a bigger crime. I grew up with the original Trilogy and it meant a lot too me, same with Indy. At the end of the day, I just think for me, I'd get more out of another Indy reboot than I would with Star Wars.

Now, addressing the Star Wars reboot, I would love it if they did something with Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy arc, which I thought was a great read. But knowing Disney, they will do everything in-house and start fresh from the ground up.

Once October ends and my run of horror movie winds down, I will be doing a Star Wars Marathon, which I have been putting off for the last few months.

If National Treasure is any indication, I don't want to see Indy anytime soon.

And as for revamping Thawn, there's really SO much material in the AU that you could do, but honestly, that's still a step backwards.

My thing about movies is that I feel, especially in this day and age, that they're conversations, they are reacting to the state of the world and saying something about it, then the world reacts, then the movies react.  This is why movies that were in the can for a long time tend not to work, cause it's a conversation everyone's already had (sometimes verbatim like Total Recall).  John Carter is a great example, everyone had that conversation ages ago, so what was once fresh came out being trite and derivative even though it said it first.  Adaptations can add to conversations because they're reacting to the source material, but Disney's big epics, the ones where "story doesn't matter" aren't interested in talking, and thusly I'm not interested in listening.  Why should we be?

I posted on Campbell's facebook page that I really have no problem with the purchase...I've always been a fan of Disney and lets face it...Star Wars is less than sacred these days.

If there's a hope for new films that might be pretty kick ass...I'd let Disney give it a go....couldn't really be worse

I wonder if they'd use the same art teams....or main designers that is./

some of those guys are super bad ass

Well Disney also get's Industrial Light and Magic as part of the deal. I don't see them firing everyone and then restocking it with their own people. That would be the worst business plan ever.

well the classic thing is "we don't want to change anything"

trust me the bottom line will be having cheap salaries and if those guys are over paid...I give their life span at the company 3 years tops.

That would be a pretty ballsy move to can the industry standard in what ILM does.

and I am not pointing fingers at Disney...don't mistake that.

I am talking in general terms of how those HUGE companies work.

there's always someone who can do the job well enough, cheaper, and probably faster....in 3 or 4 years they won't be as worried about changing things up.

trust me/
