Cabo San Lucas (Mexico)
« on: July 16, 2016, 02:12:55 pm »
Cabo

Well, we fly tomorrow. I've never been to Mexico. My wife planned this out. She found some time in her schedule before it gets busy and thought this would be a easy, quick, inexpensive trip. Well, inexpensive is a relative term. I don't know what to expect. I plan to relax at this one. Snorkel when I can.

Work really is busy, but I learned long ago, you have to take time out. No one will ever remember you for your work. They will remember you for who you are. Vacation as often as you can.

Like usual, probably won't take many pictures. I do take pictures, but they wind up going no where.

If you've been, let me know, the good and the bad. I'm just gonna wing. The wife has some stuff planned.

The Cantina or the band or both or the Town itself? No Sammy anywhere?

The Bar, Cabo Wabo sucked as did the band playing there.

Cabo San Lucas is nice.

We first went out to dinner with some new found friends and decided to walk the streets and find a place to get some drinks. Our friends wanted to at least experience CABO WABO. They had never been, all the years they were going.

You meet lots of folks and was fortunate to meet another couple where the husband loved and played music. He gave me a heads up about the band, and it was not good. He was right.

We walk in and it's a normally crowded bar. It looks like a million other bars I've been too. A little garish with day-glo spray paint artwork. Lots of pics of Sammy and acquaintances. One mention of Chickenfoot. Lots of license plates of Van Halen 5150, etc.

After 15 minutes or so we eventually found a table. Didn't stay long after that.
The band was loud. Really loud... and unbalanced. They played classic rock, but IMO, they massacred some songs. They did a GNR threefor and mangled every song. I thought the drummer was adequate. The lead guitarist did a decent job, but they still managed to deal with songs, not fully rehearsed.

I then proceeded to watch the crowd. I saw maybe two people getting into the music... or attempting to get into the music. The rest looked uninterested and were there just to say they went... like us.
After about 8 songs, they took a break. The DJ started to play some hip-hop and pop dance music and the floor suddenly was filled with dancing. Too funny.

We left and just across the court from Cabo Wabo, some misc hole in the wall bars. One band playing inside, but outside too since very few places have walls, doors or windows. I liked their sound. They seemed more intimate and fun. But lots of young folks hanging around smokin... we didn't stay.

So yes, we did go. Nothing to write home about.

Interesting. I guess the only time to really go there would be when it's known that Sammy will be performing with whoever on stage. From your description, the place sounds like a dump.

His birthday bashes are huge, apparently (well as huge as bar this size can hold (1,500). I heard a rumor he's doing his last one this year.

Here's a decent video showing some of the bar.

but this video of Sammy doing his Cabo tour in St. Louis is sooooooo much better.

So not a lot to write about. Cabo is HOT, and humid. I did not like that.

I did not care for the constant barrage of people wanting my business (money).

I thought the food was rather tame. Not one meal stood out to me. Quality stuff, but nothing spicy or to write home about.

Playa Grande was the resort we chose because of a great deal that popped up. We have points in our time share and can spend them at other time shares. Playa grande is typically 40,000 points. We got a room for 7,000 for the week. Ou cost was the plane fair.

Playa Grande was nice. Real nice. It was huge. Our 1st room was decent. It looked out over the Marina and downtown. But do to a family next door with a crying baby at all hours, we requested to move. The moved us to a most beautiful 3rd floor room 30 feet from the ocean. It was awesome.

The waves on the pacific side were always intense. Never allowed in or near it. I think it's like that all the time, but a storm out over the ocean increased the activity for a couple of days. One day was a constant deep rumble. I've never heard that before.

The resort constantly had things going on and we went to a couple. The Mexican fiesta was fun with food, drink, comedy, mariachi, dance, and an MC, who was rather good at getting the crowd going.

We went out some, to town to shop or eat, or are daily walk. Always felt comfortable and safe, except for the people always hitting you up to do something with or for them.

We took walks everyday. Not a very long beach, but it was still good to get out.

I have videos of the beach, but not sure how to post them. I took some time lapse and slo-mo stuff.

I was in the pool as much as I could be. A few infinity pools. A few large pools, but they had kids. No thanks.

But some of the best stuff is meeting other guests. Never have a problem with that. Met all kinds of interesting folks.

A kid, well, a kid to me... He was mid 20's was there with his family. He works with his dad doing solar, but recently started a Pot Farm for the medical community. He just started with about a year or two under his belt. He is still in the red with his investment, but it's about to turn. Once he clears the basic lease and air conditioning costs, he's expected to see some good profit. And then when the Federal law approves the medical marijuana, then his business will explode. He was a rather entertaining young man. Hot mom, but his dad was quite.

Yep, I'd say meeting and getting together with other like minded folks made the experience that much better.

I'd go back. They are building soooooooo much down there. Places that made that resort look small.

I really need to look into stock and funds of property management of those kinds of places.

I haven't been to Cabo since 2001.  I enjoyed it though.  I'm sure it has changed A LOT since I visited.  Glad to hear you had a great time.  I also love meeting people and hearing their stories!  I went on a deep sea fishing excursion.  It was really cool to be miles out into the ocean with nothing else in sight but water and the big fish.  We had great grilled fish that night too.  I can't remember the name of the place we stayed.  It was a timeshare.  It was really nice.  I slept in a cot outside on the back porch with a view of the water.  It was very relaxing listening to the ocean while laying there.

That sounds awesome. Especially sleeping next to the ocean. There is nothing better for the mind is that tranquility.

One of the strangest things is being in the middle of the ocean an not seeing land anywhere. Bizarre, scary, exciting all at the same time.
