The Hit Parade

Graham Green, Ryan Bollman & Peter Dobson

I haven't seen this episode in a long, long time. But as soon as I started watching it, I remembered it being pretty bad. This was really bad. From the story, to the dialog to the acting, this was atrocious. The producers seemed to be at the point of hiring anyone that had a SAG card to fill up the roles of Agents on the show. This was really embarrassing to watch. The story itself was pretty damn weak too, involving a "Witness Protection" base in putting 2 victims of a fake hit together in order to find what their connection is to the one that ordered the hit. A very forgettable episode. The frozen p enis gag, although funny, got old really fast and the Chippendale stripper at the bachelorette party at the end was just.....stupid. They couldn't even end the episode right, but instead went straight for a pointless epilogue. It's just a shame that it took this particular episode to finally give Graham Green a meatier role.

Absolution

Peter Gregory & Gregg Henry

It's a race against time as Danny poses as a priest to get the help from Henry Crowe (Gregg Henry) who is scheduled to be executed at Midnight and he may be the only one that can save a little boy who is being held by a killer, Bud Childress (Peter Gregory) who is threatening to kill him in the name of Henry if they go through with his execution. This was definitely a departure for the show. Very moody and somber. The song that plays near the end during the montage was probably the best song they could have chosen for the scene.

Mother's Day (Part 1)

Peter Dobson

Peter Dobson & Shirley Jones

Paul Hipp

Dayton Callie

Ah yeah. The Vegas episode. My home away from home. Mother's Day picks up on a story that was only mentioned in passing all the way back to the Pilot of the series, where Chance is narrating how his family got into the FBI game when his father, Danny, told him the story about how his partner at the time and his family were gunned down when he got made by the mob. The one that ordered the hit was never identified...till now.

Adding to the awesomeness of this episode is Shirley Jones (The Partridge Family) as Mary Colomby and Dayton Callie (Sons Of Anarchy) as Ed Linson. For those that never knew or cared to find out, Peter Dobson played Elvis in Forrest Gump. So, it's here that he gets to revisit that role. "Thank you, thank you very much. Uh huh." More Elvis news, he also reprises the role in the movie Protecting the King (2007).

Borderline Normal

Melora Hardin & Cameron Richardson

Cameron Richardson & Jenna Leigh Green

This is where the show kind of lost it by changing it's tone. I don't know if they were trying to lure in a different demographic or what, but I certainly didn't like the fact that they changed the opening credits and music. Although the new opening is good, it's nowhere near as good as the original. As for the episode, it was just completely different from anything that has come before. It had every cliche you could think of here included broad physical comedy. Kind of hard to make it work when the plot is basically a crossed between Porky's and Slasher films. It's not as bad as it sounds, but it's not one to be remembered either.

I had to laugh at some of the typical camera angles that you find in horror movies. It just doesn't work. And whoever did the lighting for the "scary" scenes needs to be shot. Why are they using colored lights and gels in a dark basement of a Hospital?

Sting Like A Bee

Peter Dobson & Jodi Russell

Glenn Morshower

This is where I did a facepalm back in the day when the show runner for Cover Me literally jump's the shark by trying to appeal to fans of the X-Files by giving Danny (Peter Dobson) a new partner, Ellen Lederer (Jodi Russell) who in the show was the spitting image of Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) . If that wasn't bad enough, suddenly they had Danny dressing like Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) as well. Why they chose to go down this road in this particular episode about Voxing of all things is something I will never understand. Even with Glenn Morshower (24) on board as a crooked boxing Promoter, this episode was weak, through no fault of his own.

Getting back to Jodi Russell. Technically this wasn't her first episode. She actually joined the cast on Mother's Day (Part 1), but she was in a bikini most of the time and they weren't going for the X-Files connection. But here, it was blatant and beyond obvious what they were doing.

Home For The Holidays

Michael Angarano & Melora Hardin

Kay Lenz

Timothy Busfield

Peter Dobson & Ted Marcoux

As I remember it, this was the last great episode of the series. One of the best if not THE best one for sure. Two separate stories collide with each other. The first story revolves around Danny being partnered with Mario Holiday (Ted Marcoux), a dirty cop that he hopes to bring down as he is suspected of killing the last 2 partners of his own. The other story revolves around Lisa Ramone (Kay Lenz), down and out, who is searching for the truth about Chance Arno identity after having been fired trying to prove that he exists. This quest of hers stemmed from her encounter with him as he recounted his story about how his family was dead back in Bazooka Joe.

Timothy Busfield cameos as Det. Mackowitz who helps Lisa Ramone track down the Arno Family as well as being the Director for this episode. He did a great job, like he always does.

The River

Antoinette Picatto, Michael Angarano & Melora Hardin

Michael Angarano

Up till today, I was always under the assumption that this was the final episode of the series given that I never saw any of the 3 remaining episodes that come after. There were no promos for anything that came after this, so it has always rubbed me the wrong way that The River was the end because I just did not like having it go out on such a downer. This episode is bad for a lot of reasons. But the biggest is that I just don't like Polygamy stoy lines. No matter how it's filmed it's always gonna come off incestuous and it just makes me feel...

I feel bad for Antoinette Picatto. Her role as Ruby in the series has been pretty lacking. Up till this episode, she has really only had one other episode devoted to her character, and this wasn't a very memorable one due to the content. I give this episode a half star rating just based on the knowledge that this isn't the last episode of Cover Me. Otherwise, it would have gotten Zero Stars.
