Trailer (SyFy)

I had no idea that this was even in the works as a series. Pretty cool. Bonus points for having both Aaron Stanford and Noah Bean in this. Anyone knows me knows I'm a huge fan of Nikita. So, to get these two cats working side by side is awesome. Adding to the awesomeness of the cast is the addition of Kirk Acevedo and Zeljko Ivanek. Can't wait!

Episode 1
Splinter (aka The Pilot)

It's only one episode, but I think SyFy finally has gotten back on track to producing quality stuff on par with Battlestar Galatica and I'm very happy with what I just watched. It's definitely the series for me to tune into this season. The setup (or plot) if you will is still the same: To go back in time and stop the plague that will decimate the world. But the execution of how we get there is where things differ drastically from 12 Monkeys and it's a good thing that it does. I don't want to see a carbon copy of the movie. I want to see stuff that hasn't been done yet. Nothing could be worse than sitting through an entire season and saying "this is where such and such happens". Where's the fun in that. I love that they jump right into it from the start. No setup or overlong explanation of things to come. This gets you hitting the ground running. The ending of Splinter pretty much shows you how different things are and how the series will be forging it's own path from the movie.

If you are a fan of the movie this is based on, or Terminator itself, or anything related to Time Travel. you're gonna dig this. There is more emphasis on Time Travel which tells me that they already have a wider canvas to play with here for the show. Add in a stellar cast and you can see why my enthusiasm is very high for this. Even though I was looking forward to checking this out and even though it's got a couple of players from Nikita, I still went into this with low expectations given SyFy's recent track record of producing garbage. I highly recommend this for sure. I'm on board for as long as this takes flight. I hope that people tune in and give it a shot so that the ratings are good and they keep it going. I know, it's only one episode, but still......

You are far more optimistic than me.

I have found SyFy now sub-par on every level. Especially story telling. And with such a complicated story as 12 Monkey's I didn't even make an attempt to start it.

I am definitely curious.  Mac. my friend, you're right to be a grumpy gus about Syfy channel, they've been lousy for a long time... I wouldn't give them the benefit of the doubt, but after the president of Syfy mirrored your thoughts, I think I share Chip's optimism.

Dude, you both need to check this out. It will make you forget the dreadful years of sh*t that SyFy has force fed down people throats for so many years. I actually had to double check and make sure this was in fact produced by SyFy. 12 Monkeys itself actually reminded me a lot of Nikita and it had nothing to do with the actors in it. The look and feel was very reminiscent of current day and from what we get in the future scenes in the Pilot, I like what I'm seeing so far. It's subtle for right now. But I expect it to expand as the series carries onward. There was one moment in the Pilot that I really dug aesthetically because it was a nod to a particular camera move from the movie. I won't say what or where it happens. Gonna leave that to you to point out should watch this.

Episode 2
Mentally Divergent

Any worries I had about content and quality of the show for the second episode are now erased. Yeah, I am definitely on board for this one for sure. Solid episode and I love that they have casts Tom Noonan as Pallid Man. He has made a career of playing these odd, creepy whack jobs. He's gonna fit right in here. I also like the casting of Emily Hampshire as Jennifer Goines. We only saw her for a split second in the first episode. But in this one we get a lot of her back story. For those keeping score, the Goines character was played by Brad Pitt in the movie. I like that they changed the characters gender for this one just for mixing it up. One thing that kept making me grin from ear to ear in her portrayal of the character is that she was more or less channeling Ally Sheedy's Allison character from The Breakfast Club. It was a bit more extreme here since she was locked up in a Mental Ward, but you can clearly see the similarities.

Another reason to check out the series is that we get even more proof they are in fact forging their own path. I love how the Time Travel mechanize is not perfect and doesn't always send Cole to the right place or time and in this case it sends him to North Korea. This little "throw away" scene actually plays a huge  role in the current timeline, allowing Cassandra the necessary information she needs to track Cole's location a few years after the fact. Also loved the inside-joke about Terminator. As they were setting up the joke (which you have to read between the lines), you immediately think of Terminator and are wondering if it is a joke. When they get to the "punchline", you definitely know they are paying a little tribute to Terminator itself, which was very cool. If you want to know what the joke is, you're just gonna have to watch it.

Episode 3
Cassandra Complex

Pallid Man is gonna be popping up everywhere it seems. Kinda cool that last week we see that he has a scar on his face when he was introduced to the viewer and in this one we see how he got the scar in the "past". This is one of the things I'm really going to like about the series. So many small, throwaway scenes come back later in the same episode with the answer. It keeps you on your toes. So, you definitely have to be paying attention. Not a show that you can just 'have on'. Cole is not messing around. As soon as he gets whatever information he needs to track the person behind all this, he takes you out.

Episode 4
Atari

Kind of a trippy episode and executed pretty well. So far, everything has been primarily set in the Present Day in 2015. But in this one the marjority of it was set in two different time frames in the future. One was how Cole and Ramse come to "join" the gang of thieves and the other time frame was set during the Time Machine era. This episode was one giant loop where Ramse is executed, along with everyone else, but not before Cole could go back in time and basically rewrite his future by altering the outcome of their deaths. What was fascinating to see was that everything had already happened and he was basically listening to it all and would come to find out that he was the one that gave the bad guys the secret entrance to the compound and the bullets he heard killing his brother were in fact his own. Hard to explain and not make it sound more confusing than it already seems. Just watch it. It's good. Also...I like Romina D'Ugo as Max. I guess you could call her another Nikita alum. She didn't have a big role in that series. Just a couple of episodes.

Episode 5
The Night Room

What a mindf*ck of an episode. So, they find the Night Room that contains the origin of the virus and managed to wipe it out when they self-destruct the room by burning it down. After that Cole heads back into the future, but his future is drastically altered as the compound with the Time Machine is now in control of the VII. What the f*ck! So, I'm guessing that Cole is somehow going to go back in time before the events of the Night Room and actually allow Pallid Man to take the virus and try to "destroy" it another way. This is definitely not an easy show to predict and it's great! Once again Emily Hampshire as Jennifer Goines f*cking OWNED it in this episode! Give that girl an Emmy already!!! Sheesh!!!

Episode 6
The Red Forrest

It was great to finally see Aaron Stanford and Noah Bean get an extended scene together. It was actually a good portion of the episode where Cole trys to convince Aaron Marker to help him save Cassandra to set the future back to it's original trajectory. Naturally Aaron doesn't believe a word Cole and even goes as far as making a Marty McFly reference which I thought was damn funny. But the best part was when Aaron finally sees for himself that Cole isn't full of sh*t when it teleports right in front of him. His reaction was priceless. As great as everything was in this episode, the most trippy, mind bending moment was seeing who was playing Striking Woman. It was Alisen Down. Who the f*ck is that and why is this trippy. Well, earlier today I watched the episode where her character Jean Barolay is killed by No. 6 in my Battlestar Galatica marathon. To see THAT episode and then have The Red Forrest pop up for me to watch tonight was akin to the planets lining up perfectly. Crazy.....but awesome.

Episode 7
The Keys

Really not sure what to think. This came off like THE episode they would use as the Series Finale. Very complicated episode that is sure to trip anyone up if they are not paying attention to keep the time travel time and destinations in check. With Cole literally at Ground Zero with the release of the virus, the US Government is able to use his SAT Phone to pin point his location and use an air strike to neutralize the threat, killing him and everyone else infected. This is where things get tricky, because his Time Jump is all over the place, he knows that he will back and will get the information needed to track the courier that has the virus, which of course will lead to his death, Now it's up to Cassandra  to warn Cole about his outcome. But to do that negates stopping Ground Zero from happening. Now the one thing that keeps popping in my head is that he of course Time Jumps out of his situation just as the bombs hit. So, who the f*ck knows where they go from here and that's the beauty of the show. Can't wait.

Episode 8
The Keys

Xander Berkeley!!! Another Nikita alum joins the cast. It looks like his role will be a big one, and one that will at least keep him around for a few episodes since he is competing with Katrina Jones. She of course is trying to stop the virus by going back in time, but Xander's character Col. Jonathan Foster is working on a cure after the fact. We learn that the virus is constantly mutating, so it makes creating a cure almost impossible. As for Cole, of course he survived the blast. But it's what happens after the fact that left me once again wondering where they are taking this. So, he Time Jumps two years into the future to 2017 in the same spot of the blast sight to be rescued, only to find out the virus got out, but back in 2015, Cassie "confirms" that it was eradicated. I think this particular Ground Zero was in fact neutralized, but someone else someplace else released it. This show is a head trip!

Episode 9
Tomorrow

Well, so much for Xander Berkeley sticking around. I was sure we would get a short run for him, but not THIS short! This episode was all over the place, literally. Thank God they had title cards, because even I would have gotten lost with the amount of stories being told at different time periods here. Hell, even with the time stamps, it was work to keep up with all the exposition. The one fascinating turn of events is Ramsey and Cole now at odds. Cole wants to keep going back in time to stop the virus and save humanity as well as Cassie (now that she bit the dust) and Ramsey wants to prevent Cole from completing his mission. To succeed means wiping out the future and taking away the chance at a life with the Son he just found out he had. Now THIS is how you set up a protagonist /antagonist dynamic.
