American Horror Story - Freak Show (Season Four)

Slowly, details are coming out.

The fourth season of FX's American Horror Story is starting to take shape, and it promises to be the freakiest season yet.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy tweeted the official subtitle for the upcoming season: Freak Show. The circus-themed installment will be another period piece (like season 2's Asylum) and feature many returning stars in new roles.

According to EW, the new season takes place in Jupiter, Florida during the 1950s. Jessica Lange will once again star, this time as a German immigrant who runs the last freak show in the United States. The group of outcasts will do anything to make sure the freak show stays alive. The roster of freaks includes most of the usual suspects from the American Horror Story ensemble.

The cast of American Horror Story: Freak Show will include Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Frances Conroy who, like Lange, have appeared in every season of the anthology series. It will also mark the return of season 3 additions Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett. EW also reports that Denis O'Hare (who appeared in the first and third seasons of AHS) as well as season 3 addition Emma Roberts (who is engaged to Evan Peters) are also in talks to join the fourth season.

Sarah Paulson, one of the most compelling actresses in FX’s “American Horror Story” series, revealed her character for the forthcoming forth season.

She tweeted out this afternoon that she’ll be playing a two-headed carny in “American Horror Story: Freakshow.”

“So excited to be playing Bette AND Dot this season,” she reveals. “Two heads are better than one! #AHSFREAKSHOW“

'American Horror Story: Freak Show' casts world's smallest woman

FX’s American Horror Story: Freak Show has cast the world’s smallest living woman: 20-year-old Jyoti Amge.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy announced Amge was joining the sprawling ensemble of AHS‘s fourth season on Wednesday. The Guinness Book of World Records declared Amge the smallest woman on her 18th birthday when she had a height of 2 feet, 0.6 inches. Her Wikipedia entry says her height is due to a growth condition called achondroplasia. She previously starred in the 2009 documentary Body Shock: Two Foot High Teen.

Freak Show will feature returning cast members Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Frances Conroy, Sarah Paulson, Gabourey Sidibe and Evan Peters in the fourth edition of the FX anthology drama, set to premiere in October. Michael Chiklis, Wes Bentley, Patti LaBelle, John Carroll Lynch, and Finn Wittrock have also been cast. Freak Show is set in Florida and focuses on the last American freak show in the 1950s.

I like the idea of casting Patti LaBelle, even if I can't recall any previous acting credits. It's definitely outside the box in not going for a tried and true actor.

Step right up and see the ghoulish carnival attractions from FX's upcoming American Horror Story: Freak Show.

In this new cast poster, we've got Jessica Lange, strongman Michael Chiklis, greaser Evan Peters (didn't we do that already?), tri-boobed Angela Bassett, bearded Kathy Bates, and Sarah Paulson as Siamese Twins. Also in the lineup are Denis O'Hare and Frances Conroy. Check it out...

New 'AHS: Freak Show' details: Who plays who? What's the plot?

Quote
For months we’ve gotten little tidbits on the latest season of American Horror Story, like the character names and guest stars. Now, in EW’s Fall TV Preview, readers get to see behind the curtain of Freak Show.

This latest installment of AHS is about a titular group of misfit performers, led by former German cabaret star Elsa Mars (Emmy winner Jessica Lange), who arrive in the small town of Jupiter, Florida.”My character is very manipulative,” says Lange. “She understands what’s needed and she provides it. However the thing I want to be very clear that Elsa really loves these people. She truly cares for them in her own selfish narcissistic way. It’s not just exploitation.”

With her show’s popularity waning, Elsa hopes to pump up attendance by finding and recruiting conjoined twins Bette and Dot (Sarah Paulson), two very different personalities sharing one body. “It’s not as simple as nice and evil,” Paulson says. “It’s more complicated, in true Ryan Murphy style.”

Elsa’s troupe includes Jimmy (Evan Peters), who was born with lobster-like hands, and his mother, bearded lady Ethel (Kathy Bates). “Ethel is basically Elsa’s right hand woman,” says co-creator Ryan Murphy. “She helps run the camp, and she’s sort of the guardian of the law. She had a real tragedy in that she was a real circus star in the ‘20s and 30s and then she had her baby and she became a down-and-out drunk, and Elsa saved her.”

Adding more drama to the tents is the arrival of Ethel’s ex-husband (and Jimmy’s father) Dell Toledo, a strongman who’s on the run from the law. “Jimmy is the big man on campus and is the male leader of the group until Dell comes and they begin to battle for power under Elsa,” says Murphy. Then there’s Dell’s new wife, Desiree Dupree, a three-breasted performer played by Angela Bassett. The role requires Bassett to wear a prosthetic that covers her entire chest. “Angela likes to flash them,” jokes Paulson. “She’s like, ‘Look at my 3 boobs!’”

Even freakier than a tri-boob? This season’s main villain, a nasty fella (and murderer) named Twisty the Clown (John Carroll Lynch). The evil Bozo has retired in Jupiter and is not thrilled by the arrival of the freak show. “He’s out to make their lives a living hell,” explains Murphy. “He’s wearing a mask on the lower part of his face and there comes a point in the season where takes the mask off and when you see what’s under you will faint in terror.”

Other Coven alums back for more (despite the scary clown) include Emma Roberts and Denis O’Hare as a pair of con artists, Frances Conroy as a wealthy woman whose son (Finn Whitrock) wants to join the freak show, and Gabourey Sidibe as a socialite who returns home to Jupiter when her mother (Patti LaBelle, who Murphy called personally to appear on the show) goes MIA.

There will, of course, be the hallmarks fans have come to expect from AHS, including time jumps (look for flashbacks to Elsa’s cabaret days in 1930s Germany as well as a peek at young Ethel) and a two-part Halloween episode featuring Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games) as a character named Edward Mordrake. “He is a very famous horror myth,” explains Murphy. “It was a man with two faces. A normal face and then a face on the back of his head that would whisper evil things and force the forward-facing entity to commit horrible crimes.”

So I've watched only two episodes thus far. The first ep. was long and introductory. Lots of WTF characters and happenings.

The 2nd episode strangely did little for me. I think it has a lot to do with not caring about one single person. It's just not there. Sure, they all have issues and that's what drives story telling. But I make the parallel of a Friday the 13th flick. Stuff is going, but you have zero invested in any of the characters except maybe Michael Meyers. Otherwise at the end of the show it all goes poof.

I hope that feeling doesn't continue with the show.

Since I am 3 seasons behind, I'm just going to wait for all seasons to be on DVD before revisiting the series. I think it will play a lot better for me.
