The Leftovers - HBO

The Leftovers on HBO premiered last night and like "Lost" of a decade ago, starts off with a bang, doesn't let up and designs more questions than providing answers. It was definitely intriguing, but like Lost, if we don't get some answers, I'm outta there. Let's just say, I had a puzzled look on my face almost through the entire episode.

Anyway, here is a discussion with lots of spoilers

Last night (June 29) HBO premiered its highly anticipated pilot for “The Leftovers.” And like most HBO pilots, it spent a good deal of time thrusting the viewer into a world without context, introducing characters we don’t quite know or understand.

But you know, really well shot, acted and intriguing enough to guarantee we’re coming back for episode two.

With that first 75 minutes out of the way, though, comes questions; and some of them, we were able to get the cast of the show to answer while on the red carpet of the premiere here in New York:

and they provided this at the end of the show...

I’ll start with the most recent things I watched this long weekend first... and that was watching The Leftover’s last night. It was the 2nd episode… Penguin One, Us Zero. Even the title doesn’t make sense (yet) with respect to the whole episode.

This from Lindelof:
Series co-creator Damon Lindelof explains that the tuxedoed seabird only shows up briefly – and the title is more of a metaphor. “There’s only one instance of a penguin appearing in the second episode, and that’s all the context we want to offer,” he says. “We’re trying to grasp at some sort of thematic idea there, in terms of how it relates to our main character.” Lindelof is talking about Kevin Garvey, of course, Mapleton’s police chief. “The second episode is attached very much to Kevin’s experience,” Lindelof continues. “We were pretty purposefully pretentious about our titles, and it will hopefully be fun for the audience to wonder why we named them what we named them.”

The show is testing my patience with all the ambiguity. I’ll give it a little more time, but if it continues with its nonsensical perspectives, I’m gonna bail. I still don’t know anything more. They only touched on the same elements as before with the sheriff Garvey’s  wife, dogs, the mystery man, the mayor, Sheriff’s dad, the sheriff’s kids. Gah and the Guilty Remnant (GR), who for some reason are not chain smoking this time around. WTF? I’m hoping he’s trying to show the GR are symbolic for today’s radical religious groups. They are inspired and dedicated but make no logical rational sense. I can’t imagine the ‘No Talking’ continuing. That’s just stupid.

And the trailer for the upcoming episode looks just equally confusing.

Since I don't have HBO, this is definitely going to be a DVD pickup for me when it's finally in my Library system.

Ep. #3 'Two boats and a helicopter'

I’ve been on the fence with The Leftovers. Damon Lindelof has a style of telling a complicated woven story. This 3rd episode takes a dramatic turn and focus’s on one character this time around. Albeit, his connection with other characters do come up and explain some backstory. But overall it appears to be mostly symbolic, which I’ve never been a fan of. This time, pigeons are important? No, not the pigeons themselves, but where and why they are where they are. Did God send a sign (thus the known story of Two Boats and a Helicopter).  I’m stretching here. I hate going into a story confused, watching confused and leaving confused.

It was very frustrating. Some simple things I saw come a mile away and could have written what would happen next and other, a majority of the story was just chaotic and nonsensical. At least in my eyes. I hear people discuss (or hope) it all comes together in the end.

What? I’m not waiting a whole season to see if all makes sense at the end. I’m not going to remember most of these head scratching moments.

The Leftover’s is testing my patience and it’s losing. Another  episode like last night and I’m going to write it off.
