Pilot

Now THIS is the stuff that I get off on. Anything that forces you to think outside of the box and really analyze what is being shown to you on the screen is a good thing. It's really hard to describe this one. It's about Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) who suffers a horrific car accident that takes the life of his son. It's about Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) who suffers a horrific car accident that takes the life of his wife. Did you catch that? You didn't just read a typo. Michael is either dreaming...or awake. You really have to check this out for yourself. It sounds confusing and you think you would get lost watching this as he bounces back and forth from dream state to being awake. The only thing is, we don't know which is which. The creators of the show were at least smart enough to distinguish the scenes between bright colors for the Wife, Hannah Britten (Laura Allen) and monochromatic for the scenes with the Son, Rex Britten (Dylan Minnette).

This is one stellar cast that gives it some oomph. I'm a huge fan of pretty much everyone involved with this. The cast of characters are Efrem Vega (Wilmer Valderrama), Dr. Johnathan Lee (BD Wong), Isaiah "Bird" Freeman (Steve Harris) and Dr. Judith Evans (Cherry Jones). How can you not love the premise and the cast? I'm down for this one with no hestitation. The Pilot sets everything up perfectly. But I have already figured it all out. At least this is what my theory is. If you don't want to know, stay out of the Spoiler Tags. You've been warned.

The Little Guy

After watching the Pilot, I got a little concerned that the series would just be the same week in and week out with the Michael trying to make sense of his Dream/Awake scenario with the head doctors and that would be it. So, I was actually happy that they have already introduced some sort of conspiracy within his department with regards to Captain Tricia Harper (Laura Innes). What exactly is going on with the "Little Guy" case and her involvement is unclear. Does this "little" conspiracy have a much larger role with what is happening to Michael? Who knows. Only time will tell, but at least it's broadening the scope of the series to further engage me.

This just in from TV Line

In other good news for NBC, Awake in its third week saw a 17 percent bump in audience (to 5.1 mil) while matching last Thursday’s 1.6 demo rating (which marks a 33 percent improvement over the Peacock’s previous Thursdays-at-10 performances via Prime Suspect and The Firm).

Guilty

This was another great episode, but somewhat different in that the bulk of it was on one side of his "reality". A lot of it took place with Michael and his son and not so much with the Wife. I kinda just assumed that each episode would be split down the middle 50/50. I'm okay with one side getting more than the other side. It will give the actors more screen time and give the viewer more chances to connect with them and feel what Michael, Rex and Hannah are going through. I really enjoyed this episode, even if I already figured out who was Guilty of the crime as soon as his old partner popped up at the station. It's kind of a cliche now that when it's written into any show, you automatically know the 'beats' of the story that's unfolding.

Kate Is Enough

That was a huge drop for me. It's to skew too much over into standard forensics and away from the cerebral of of what is or isn't a dream or reality. Both Psychiatrist were practically nonexistent in this one. I thought this was going to be about trying to uncover what was going on in his head and less about solving cases for the Police Department. And why haven't they followed up with what his Captain has to do with some, if not all of this?

Oregon

Very cool episode and one that looks to be the start of a longer story arc involving a Serial Killer who knows about Detective Britten's little dilemma about being awake/dreaming. With him on the loose, I wonder how he will be able to utilize this to his advantage to neutralize Britten's attempt to find him. I like the character of Santoro (Megan Dodds), but it's unclear if she will play a bigger role in the series since she's landed in the hospital. My guess is that she will given that she has been tracking the killer for 12 years.

That's Not My Penguin

This was a really good episode involving Detective Britten who has to help diffuse a hostage situation when a patient diagnosed with Schizophrenia threatens to blow up a Hospital. Britten, who in the process of trying to help this guy is able to see his own life and what his actions regarding his Awake/Dream scenario may be doing to him and those around him. The episode itself is suggesting that Britten himself is suffering from Schizophrenia. Very interesting. Penguin ftw!
