Fall 2011 Shows
« on: September 15, 2011, 11:23:04 am »
Well, the season has started. Give your thoughts on old and the new. If you think the show will have staying power, then a separate thread might do. But I have a feeling a good portion will not have the legs to carry them through.

Free Agents - NBC

Meh, not surprisingly and completely underwhelmed. I like Azaria and Kathryn Hahn is kinda hot in a girl next door kind of way. But did not laugh once and it just looks like a waste of time

Up All Night

Even worse, but I predicted it not only from the trailer, but my distaste for Will Arnett. Do not find him funny in any way. I likes me some Christine Applegate, but this ain't gonna do it. 15 minutes into the show without laughing I started to think how are they going to build episode after episode of baby problems. Don't get it. A complete waste of time.

Shame about Up All Night. I was going to give this a look. Not so much now. I like Will Arnet, mainly because of Arrested Development. Even though I'm a fan of his, I passed on his last series that died a quick death last season. But I gotta give him a shout out for his hilarious guest cameo on his wife's show. That would be Parks and Recreation for those not in the know.

My first impressions…

Two and Half Men

Tonight was the season premiere with Ashton Kutcher minus Charlie Sheen. I think the anticipation was high for last night’s show, thus the high pressure for this to carry torch of good comedy. I think it did a very respectable job. I laughed out loud several times and enjoyed how the show unfolded, first with the killing off (funeral) of Charlie and then the introduction of Walden (Kutcher).

I think the most striking thing last night was realizing how each character is very funny in their own right. Minus Charlie your attention is on Alan, Jake, Rose, Judith and Berta. The core director, producers and writers have not changed, so I suspect I can count on continued excellent writing. The new variable is the direction it will now go. I’m optimistic. I'll continue to watch.

Two Broke Girls

Brand new shooting out of the gate is a story of opposites. One smart ass, quick witted Max and 180 degree opposite socialite, suddenly poor, but polite Caroline making for complete friction between the two. Some of you might remember The Odd Couple. I absolutely love the sarcasm that exudes from Max. It’s quick, fresh and funny as hell. I’m guessing they both have a lot to learn from each other and that’s the premise to evolve.

James Burrows is responsible for this one and you should know his track record with television comedy is exemplary (Friends, Wings, Cheers, Two and Half Men, Big Bang, and on).

Last night had its hits and misses. I would expect that for a new start. You have to build these shows. Given time, I think it’s going to do well. I'll continue to watch.

Whitney - NBC

Well, with the heavy promotion and laughing pretty hard at those promotions... actually watching the show in all it's context was kind of a let down. I did laugh at some funny stuff.

I'll give it the benefit of doubt and make attempts to watch it again, but I am definitely hesitant. Let's hope it's just getting adjusted and really hit it's stride.

The Big Bang Theory started it's 5th season and it's premiere started where last season left off. Just a consistently well written and especially funny show.

At least I'll have that show to fall back on, with the rather unstable new fall season of shows I've watched is whittling down rather quickly.

I will be buying The Big Bang Theory DVD sets. That's why I never have a thread for this show. Was a year late on it and decided to go the DVD way in its place. Same goes for 30 Rock, Community, Breaking Bad and Dexter as well.

I thought about buying the season's, but honestly I would not have time to watch them. Besides it's in syndication and by all accounts it is on a lot.

For me, having DVD Sets offers me a lot more flexibility in when I can watch them while juggling new shows currently on the air.

Big Bang Secrets

Pre-show rituals: For Jim Parsons, it's eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, for Johnny Galecki, it's enunciation exercises, for Kunal Nayyar, it's taking a 15-minute nap, and for Simon Helberg, it's "prancing around in my dressing room in very little clothes yelling and making tribal noises." Quips Nayyar: "That's my alarm clock for my nap."

First-take jitters: Even though the actors are seasoned vets at this point — Bang is approaching 100 episodes — Nayyar says, "It's always that first take of the day that you want to nail and not mess up." For this episode, the first take features the guys' weekly trip to the comic book store where Sheldon has brought Amy (Mayim Bialik) along, much to her chagrin. "She does not like it, and I'm kind of disappointed," Bialik admits. "It's going against my personality type. Of anyone on this cast, I'm the comic book nerd!"

Comics galore: The comic book store set is frequently refreshed with the latest comic paraphernalia, from DC's new 52 comics to Walking Dead t-shirts adorning the walls. Diehard fans who keep their eyes peeled and their trigger fingers on the pause button may just spot an Easter egg near the counter that will take their Bang experience to the next level.

Humor-inducing huddles: Between takes, producers Bill Prady, Steve Molaro and Lorre are often seen with a few writers conferencing with the actors to make a changes to the script. Molaro compares it to a sports team, "where you huddle to figure out how to win," he says. Two particular confabs afforded the group another shot at Amy's distaste of big-bosomed female superheroes, along with two new versions of Sheldon's infamous "Penny" knock.

X-rated Bang
: Audiences are almost treated to a different kind of Bang when filming a Twister scene takes a less-than-PG turn. "I was flashing the entire crew every time I got down into Twister position," says Melissa Rauch, who portrays Bernadette. "Luckily there was an audience barrier, and thank goodness I had tights on. Jim was behind me and getting a full backside view. The show may have needed to go to cable if I didn't have the wardrobe team to cover up Bernadette's business."

The big man on campus: After the year he's had, Lorre is as big a presence on the WB lot as any of the stars on all the posters. After the show, fans wait excitedly in the audience to snag an autograph from the Bang creator, who chuckles while signing a Soft Kitty t-shirt. Aww! You won't see something that heartwarming on a Vanity Card!

Happily ever hungover: Coming down from filming an episode can be like a high, many of the cast members note, which is why they'll often hang around on set afterward to unwind. "Tuesday nights it's hard to go to bed because you have so much adrenaline," Nayyar says. "The next morning, you feel like you've been hit by a train. Seriously, you feel hungover without doing anything."

I have not been watching much of regular network TV for awhile. MY wife pulls up shows On Demand and that's pretty much the way I catch up with the shows.

Two and Half Men I apparently have dropped out quit a long time, because watching it last night, had characters and situations I was not aware of.

Bottom at the core of this post, the show sucked majorly. I thought every joke was forced. Not funny jokes and it just seemed odd all around. Clearly different writers. But the physical comedy struck me the most. I think the cast is calling it in now. Show up for a paycheck.

Now mind you, this is on just one show. Maybe they don't all suck, but I was thinking if I sat down for the first time to watch this, I would without a doubt say never again.

As I said before, never seen an episode. Were you still watching the show when they wrote the kid out of it? If so, how did they do it? Send him off to college?

Yea, they slowly wrote him out. Sent him off to the armed forces. He pretty much only appeared on Skype. I'm sure his rant nailed that coffin shut. Which I believe are parties are fine with.

I quit watching sometime there. Since then, I believe Charlies Lesbian sister is now resident and Alan has a steady woman and engaged. I dunno. I could be wrong.

Last nights episode, which I did watch and groaned at, the show did put an arc in. Walden brought home a small robot. Just a prop really. Anyway for Alan's engagement part, Walden told Alan, Jake is coming. All they did was paste a face picture of Jake on the robot. They then said their new living situation was still Two and Half Men. (groan).

That's the kind of stupid stuff that was all over this episode.

CBS is also picking up NFL Thursday Night Football and ending the long-running sitcom "Two and a Half Men," which runs for just one more season.
