Episode 1:

With the onslaught of promos for Gotham the past couple of months, I felt that I had already seen the entire episode and yet, it felt new and exciting. I like the tone and the style of what we get in the Pilot, although I will say that even with the amount of clips I had watched since Comic Con, I was kind of expecting it to be a bit more grittier. Grimy. Dark. It wasn't and yet it really doesn't matter. It's going to come down to characters and the actors that play them and so far, I like all of them, especially Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Oswald Cobblepot / The Penguin (Robin Taylor). I was a bit surprised at how much screen time was given to Oswald. I figured that all of the famous characters were going to have some kind of fringe involvement at the start. But it seems like a huge chunk of the story line will be propelled by him, which is fine with me. I think Oswald will become a fan favorite for the series right out of the gate based on just the Pilot atone.

For those that are wondering, this isn't going to be your typical superhero franchise (as they really don't exist yet). It's gonna be a straight up detective series and I like what they are already doing with Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), two polar opposites of each other. Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) didn't really have much screen time in this one. I was expecting more. I'm sure that's coming in the forthcoming episodes. Really curious if there will be any typical types of "Superheroes" in Gotham during this time while we wait for eveyone to become their iconic characters. Anyway, solid opening to the series.
