Episode 1:
Pilot

With the onslaught of promos for Gotham the past couple of months, I felt that I had already seen the entire episode and yet, it felt new and exciting. I like the tone and the style of what we get in the Pilot, although I will say that even with the amount of clips I had watched since Comic Con, I was kind of expecting it to be a bit more grittier. Grimy. Dark. It wasn't and yet it really doesn't matter. It's going to come down to characters and the actors that play them and so far, I like all of them, especially Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Oswald Cobblepot / The Penguin (Robin Taylor). I was a bit surprised at how much screen time was given to Oswald. I figured that all of the famous characters were going to have some kind of fringe involvement at the start. But it seems like a huge chunk of the story line will be propelled by him, which is fine with me. I think Oswald will become a fan favorite for the series right out of the gate based on just the Pilot atone.

For those that are wondering, this isn't going to be your typical superhero franchise (as they really don't exist yet). It's gonna be a straight up detective series and I like what they are already doing with Detective James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), two polar opposites of each other. Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) didn't really have much screen time in this one. I was expecting more. I'm sure that's coming in the forthcoming episodes. Really curious if there will be any typical types of "Superheroes" in Gotham during this time while we wait for eveyone to become their iconic characters. Anyway, solid opening to the series.

I've been hearing mixed things about the premiere, but I'm glad you liked it (io9 describes it as a "bonkers dystopia.")

Bittr Script Reader put up an excellent post about his problems with the premiere, all of which sound liek the exact issues I would have (prequel-itis) and then throws out an amazing idea: what if Bruce Wayne was killed in the pilot?  They're never going to show Batman on the show anyway, now all bets would be off.  Now THAT would have been a hell of a twist, I know my interest would just SKYROCKET.

Even though the series is based on canon material, I would love to see them go in a different direction and create a lot of new content for the viewers and not rely so much on stuff from the comic books. That way it keeps things fresh and on our toes. I like the idea that the series starts and ends with James Gordon. How much do we really know about him beyond the things we've seen in the movies? Not much. So, here is a chance for them to create something with depth that can add to the lore and give us original content.

One thing I should have pointed out as to why some of the issues that most seem to be picking on for the Pilot is that I took a much different approach to this based on my initial offering into Marvel's Agent's of SHIELD. Because I had set out expecting a certain type of show with SHIELD, I was coming away from it somewhat p*ssed. I think those that are complaining about Gotham right now are of the same mindset that I was. Once they let go of it (as I did with SHIELD), it's going to play much better. I went into Gotham not expecting it to be anything like the movies or even the comic books and that they would try to do their own version of the events THEIR way. Just my 2 cents.

I have been to busy to catch alot of previews and listen to the bla bla bla about this show. I am so happy I did. Recorded it and watched it with my daughter we both thought they knocked it out of the park. I did not think they would kill Bruce's parents in the first episode. I thought they would do some back story with them and they still can through flashbacks. Little Bruce acting like he was going to jump was unexpected also.

I too thought they were going to hold off on killing the Wayne's till further into the season. Even though that scene in particular was used in a lot of promos leading up to the Season Premiere, I just figured they would save that scene until much much later. I was wrong.

Episode 2
Selina Kyle

I'm a fan of both Lili Taylor and Frank Whaley, so it was a nice surprise to see them pop up on tonight's episode. Didn't have a clue who they were playing, but I did catch that they were working for the Dollmaker, who was last seen on Arrow. Yes, I'm very well aware that it's not going to be tied into a show that airs on the CW and they will have a different actor portraying him. But it's still cool that this character is on one network and pops up on another. With them kidnapping homeless kids off the street, it gives us a chance to learn a little bit about Selina Kyle / Catwoman.....er, girl. Nice bit of casting by having Carol Kane playing the Penguin's mother.

Gotham - Was Episode 2 an Improvement?

I gotta agree, I too like the new spin on Alfred Pennyworth.

Episode 3
The Balloonman

I don't know if the Balloonman is a DC Character or one that was created specifically for the TV Series. I'm guessing is the later rather than the former. As hokey as it sounds by having this particular vigellante's justice invovling a Weather Balloon, handcuffs and the guilty floating up into the sky.....it translated really well. It did look a bit like watching a cartoon.....but it was still fun. As before, Penguin is stealing all the scenes he is in. I was not expecting him to reveal to Jim that he never left Gotham. Figured he would say in hiding until he BECAME the Penguin.

I really am enjoying this. I agree with you chip balloon man? yea real interesting. But it played well. At the end when they are loading the bad guy into the meat wagon and his answer was "next target does not matter everyone is bad Gotham is bad". -Not an Exact quote- Liked the Bruce Wayne practicing with Alford also.

Episode 4
Arkham

We finally get the episode that zeroes in on Arkham. Unfortunately, it's not the episode I was expecting. It's rundown and empty. No inmates. Obviously they are going to have to setup a lot for what's to come in the future, but still a letdown none the less. As for the rest of the episode, didn't really care for the assassin. Too simplistic. I did however like watching Penguin orchestrating the hit on his boss so that he could get closer to Sal Maroni and I also liked Fish Mooney auditioning two new singers for her Bar and then having them beat the sh*t out of each other to determine who would get the "job". I hope Bruce Wayne starts sneeking out of the house soon and starts doing detective work. He's not doing much on the show so far (yes, another slow buildup that will payoff later....hopefully). It would be cool to see Bruce wandering around Gotham and having Selina take an interest in him and show him around town, thus kick-starting their "relationship".

Episode 5
Viper

This wasn't a bad episode. I think the problem I'm having with Gotham right now has to do with the fact that 4 episodes in it's feeling a little too much like a 'Monster-of-the-week' set up, even if that isn't the case. By nature, all comic books rely on this type of set up, but it doesn't neccessarly work on a series because it gets old really fast. A prime example of how to do it right is The X-Files. Everyone wants their mythology episodes because that was the meat and bones. But when we didn't get our conspiracy stuff, that's when the 'Monsters' episode were a nice break. Right now, Gotham is doing the opposite of that. As I said, its only 4 episodes in. I will say that they finally did something right by getting Bruce Wayne out of the house as he investigates his own company and how it is being run. We see his detective side being born by his headstrong desire to read and re-read all the information he has about Wayne Enterprises. I like how Alfred thinks that what he is doing is unhealthy and by the final scene he has joined him in his crusade.

I just hope this is the start of where they push Bruce more to the forefront and start having him explore Gotham and running into Selina, Ivy and whoever else they have on deack. It's gonna make the series better for the viewers that are sticking with the show. But as of right now, I say without question that Arrow is outpacing Gotham by a mile.
