Time Zones

After getting caught up with the first 6 seasons of Mad Men via DVD and taking a couple of years to do that, it's both weird and cool that I can watch the final season live (or On Demand, which is the case with this episode). I will try to catch the remaining episodes live from here on out on Sunday nights. As for Time Zones, I love the idea that Don Draper is "still working for the company", but doing it through a proxy by giving Freddy Rumsen the script to read during pitches. I'm surprise that Peggy didn't even pick up on the fact that it read and sounded just like what Don would have put together. I saw Peggy's meltdown at the end coming a mile away. Forced to confront the man she can't have, a job that nobody cares about and living alone. Naturally she would have a meltdown.

As for Betty, I'm not at all surprised that she was nowhere to be found in the episode, same goes for Sally. This was an issue I had with Season 6 where a lot of the character's disappeared for long stretches. I hope this isn't the case this season, given the fact this is the last one. So I don't want to see characters get shortchanged. Loved the cameo from Neve Campbell. Quite possibly the best thing she has ever done. Her role was very subdued, but she brought a lot of depth to her part as a widow.

A Day's Work

Don's secret of not having a job at the firm comes back to bite him in the ass when Sally pays an announced visit to the office, which was a great way for Don and Sally to share a few scenes together. It has been on shaky ground for quite some time. She resents him for cheating on his wife with the neighbor, and he doesn't really pay attention to anything Sally has to say. So naturally there scenes had a lot of tension, which made her proclamation at the end all the more better when she wishes him a 'Happy Valentine's' and says she loves him. The look on his face was priceless. Hell, it took me off guard because it was the last thing I'd ever expect to her from her. Elsewhere, I thought Peggy's story line about the Valentine's Day flowers was funny. Still no sign of January Jones yet. Sigh.

Field Trip

This started off kind of sluggish. Slower than normal. It's not until Don Draper shows up "unannounced" at his former stomping ground where he use to "work". The tension was electric. Everyone looking at him sideways....just waiting for the other shoe to drop as they were clearly wondering "why the f*ck is he here?". So when he finally got his meeting that he was promised and they decided they wanted him to come back, but with stipulations attached, I was expecting him to do that "Draper" thing and fly off the handle. Nope. He just says "okay". Was not expecting that at all. But then, beggars can't be choosers. Started off slow.....but finished off strong.

The Monolith

I really didn't know what to expect after Don agreed to the stipulations so quickly. Turns out, neither did he. Kind of weird that even with Don's bad behavior in the past, that the firms partners would do everything they could to marginalize him, either as punishment or they just didn't trust him to not f*ck up again. I did find a lot of humor in the fact that they basically had Don now working for Peggy. The entire episode was a p*ssing contest and yes, Don eventually loses it and gets sh*tfaced because he rather get fired instead of working for her. I was kind of surprised that he came to the realization that nothing is ever going to be handed to him on a silver platter again. So, does this mean this is the start of his redemption to carry us to the Series Finale? I'm not sure. There is bound to be a few more missteps along the way.

I dug Sterling's story where he goes to the Hippie farm to rescue his daughter and then ends up being seduced by the lifestyle. That to only had a short shelf life before he reverted back to his former self. The idea that any mother would willing abandon their own child to live that life is pretty pathetic. Really, who the f*ck does that and thinks it's okay?

The Runaways

What the hell did I just watch? What the fuuuuuuck! Michael Ginsberg literally cuts off his own nipple and gives it to Peggy in a box for her to open. If you had told me when I first started watching Mad Men that there would come a time during the series run that this would bare fruit, I would have said you were f*cking nuts. This just isn't something you expect to see on any show, especially one the likes of Mad Men. But now that I think about it, it does make the name of the show take on new meaning. Ginsberg's literally (second time I've used that word in this post) is going Mad and he blames the IBM Computer as the sole reason for his spiraling out of control. Now he had been acting irrational for the past couple of episodes, but I certainly didn't expect him to unravel in the manner that he does.

As for the rest of the episode, the threesome that Don, Megan and her friend engaged in was by all accounts racy, even for a show that's on cable. I only expect to see stuff like that on Showtime or HBO....not on AMC. Times, they are a-changing for sure. Even though the show ended in classic Mad Men fashion with Don hijacking a secret meeting with a potential client, I didn't really care much for this episode. Just....odd. Not one of their better ones for sure.

The Strategy

It's about damn time that we got a extended Peggy / Don scene. There had been far too many short, passing on by type of scenes. Actually, there weren't even that many. But this one gave us a scene with chewing on. I like that it was Peggy trying to established that she is the boss and Don is the underling now. But that isn't enough because in her eyes, she sees that no one at her office will ever equate her on equal ground. While watching her being margenalize.....again, I began to think how SHOULD the series wrap up? Peggy coming into work on the last episode with an AK-47 and just emptying as many shell casing as possible would be justified. I also liked how they wrapped up the scene with them actually dancing together, which was a bit unexpected. But I really liked the final shot of the episode with Peggy, Don and Pete just eating a burger together. It felt like old times with the 3 of them sharing screen time.

Waterloo

When you think of Mad Men, the absolute last thing you would think of is a 'Song and Dance' number. Well, we can finally cross that one off the list and it was 100% perfect in how it played out. I think it may go down as one of the best scenes ever for the series. Earlier in the episode, long time fan favorite Bert Sterling (Robert Morse) passed away, leaving the company scrambling to protect itself. This made it business as usual and was somewhat cold for everyone kind of push it aside, just to get back to working. It's not until the end when the magnitude of his passing finally hits Don as he's walking back to his office when Bert reveals himself. The song and dance that follows was very touching and a great way to send Bert / Robert Morse off the show. I like that Don showed some emotion while watching him sing his song. Priceless!

This is the mid season finale, but Mad Men won't be returning until 2015. Sigh. Such and long, long wait...........
