A real music contest: 'The Linda Perry Project'

Very interested in checking this out. Hopefully Roku doesn't drag its feet in getting this up in a timely fashion.

The Journey Begins

10 minutes into the episode and I was already hooked. For starters, THIS is how you do a music reality show. None of this bullsh*t pagentry garbage that they truck out there as seen on American Idol or The Voice. This isn't about creating the ultimate poster to hang on bedroom walls. This is about getting something real from each artist and that's what Linda does right off the bat. The episode flew by insanely fast and I realized that she only got around to working with 4 artist out of a much larger group. I don't know their names (yet), but to see Linda pushing them (metaphorically) to dig deeper and seeing the results was truly inspiring.

I loved seeing the Hip Hop artist being forced to freestyle behind music that she would NEVER have done on her own and it was great. Another standout moment comes with 'Boy Band' artist (still don't know their names). It was a standout moment for the wrong reason because I was extremely p*ssed to see him cut himself off at the legs when he stopped "singing". When he was being pushed to just ad lib and find a melody of words and decides that he wants to sing something "that makes sense", I wanted to punch him in his Boy Band face. I get why Linda was p*ssed because I was too. The music was there, the groove was there, the emotion was there......and he thought he was above it all.

If these are the kinds of moments we can look forward to throughout the season, I am so there. This is what I want to see. People getting creative and creating something amazing out of nowhere is a thing of  beauty. This series is probably the one that I will look forward to each and every week. As for the format of the show, it's kind of a cross between Bandcamp meets Rocked with Gina Gershon meets The Real World. By that I mean all the contestants are living under one roof (the Rock Star: INXS mansion btw) as they bond with each other while trying to make an impact on Linda who will sign someone at the end of the season to her record label. I would kill to be on this show just to learn from Linda. No need to rate this because each episode is just going to be a continuation from the last one.

Yup.

You need to watch this. You're in a band and you're gonna get inspired. It was also fascinating to watch a 3 piece band that was invited onto the show and seeing them literally on the verge of breaking up when they have a shot to win it all. Band dynamics are always fluid and the smallest thing can destroy all the work you put into it.

Well, just keep an eye out for VH1 on TV. They are rerunning the episode all week long.

Finding the Weakest Link

I can't say enough good things about the series. It's fantastic. I love Linda Perry. Sure, I was a fan of hers when she had he time, but I'm more a fan of her as a teacher, which is exactly what she is. She is drilling home the idea that you have to put yourself out there and risk looking foolish if you want to get to the real 'you'. And the way she does that is basically making up songs on the fly and ad-libbing made up lyrics that don't mean much. It's all about phonetics, which is what Sammy Hagar does on pretty much every song he jams on for the first time. We get 3 such songs in this episode, but I think my favorite is the one she does with the Black sisters (can't remember their names at the moment). Linda scats out a bass line, which the bass player picks up and they are off and running. It gave me chills just to see everyone bring it....even if it didn't make sense. It was a thing of beauty to watch.

Well, the first house guest gets the boot and Linda chose wisely. They got rid of 'Boy Band' Dude or whatever his name is. He looks, acts and sounds like a poseur. He will never be heard from again. Anyway, great episode.

Busking, Romance and New Blood

Another stellar episode that shakes things up in a big way. With the exodus of the kid from last week, everyone assumes they are one step closer to the end. Wrong! Linda brings in Omar, a two-person punk band. Immediately this changes everything for the rest of the house. But this being the Linda Perry Project, she immediately changes the dynamic of the band and I don't think it's going to recover from it. The spotlight is definitely on Nick, the drummer for Omar and he not only has to learn a new style of drumming (Mac, this episode is definitely for you), but he has to comes to terms about his feelings for his partner in crime.

It was fun to see Linda literally take everyone out of their comfort zones and make them play on the street corner with a can in their hand and earn their keep. It really forced them to look at themselves as musicians and find out what works and what doesn't work. It was great to see those that shouldn't have a chance in succeeding actually dominate it all. Lovin' this show and I can't wait till the next episode.

If You Can't Take The Heat Get Off The Stage

The right person got the boot from the show today. I have nothing against Mackenzie as a person. But as an artist, she is beyond dull. She's invisible. Sh*t man, she couldn't even SCREAM at the top of her lungs when Linda asked her to do so. Just a little peep and then she crawls back into her shell. Really don't know what Linda saw in her in the first place that would warrant her getting a spot on the show. Anyway, Hunter Valentine's drama is unraveling at warp speed. They are the most fun to watch and the most painful to sit through with all their power trips and ego clashes. You'd think they had tour the world 100x's and had countless Gold and Platinum albums with dick wagging contest. Kinda hard to pull off given that they are an all-girl band. With that said, I liked Linda's challenge of the day which was that each bang/singer had to draw out of a hat their 3 chords changes and then they had to write a song in 15 minutes and then perform in front a live audience at SIR Studios. Now that's throwing someone into the deep end!!!!!

Coutney Love's Fallout

As the title suggest, we get a visit from the one and only Courtney Love to give her advice to the artist before her. It's a small moment in the episode, but not one to carry it. The bulk of the episode is the impending implosion of Hunter Valentine and how there are basically two people vying for the lead singer role of the band. It's not until a frustrated Linda gets them into the studio and has Kiyomi sing the songs she's written and then has Aimee sing her own songs does it all make sense to Linda and us, the viewer. Kiyomi's songs are all the same. They are boring and bleed into one another. Aimeesong is infinitely better and more upbeat with better chord changes. I'm on Team Aimee because of this. I was unclear until this little "Battle of the Singers" moment, but I'm a believer now. The episode ends where Aimee  finally "quits" the band. It remains to be seen if this is an actual proclamation or a bit of clever editing to get us to think that. Whatever the case is, this was truly a riveting episode to watch. Can't wait for the next episode to see what happens. Mac, you really should be watching this.
