'Scream' TV series: Wes Craven confirms he's been approached

I dunno what it is about this news that I don't like. Is it because they are bringing this to the TV screen or the fact that MTV is producing it? This is a wait and see for me.

This just reeks as a bandwagon reaction by some suit at a Network that looked at the success of The Walking Dead and Bates Motel and decided to just grab another 'name' property and see if it sticks as well. MTV overseeing this is gonna be bad. They are notoriously cheap when it comes to budgets and I don't see them caring much in the way of good product either.

Trailer #1

I totally forgot about this thread and the fact that this was being turned into a TV Series. I was watching Catfish when the commercial came on and this is what they showed. It's riddled with cliches, but then again, the horror genre itself thrives off of that. This is still a wait a see for me, but the trailer isn't winning me over.

Episode 1:
Pilot

Okay, I'm 3 weeks behind, but I finally got around to checking out the first episode and it was....pretty good. Well, it was much better than I thought it would be. This is Scream, so expect a lot of familiar tropes to pop up during the series, as evidence in the Pilot. It has the same character types that made the movies work. The typical High School Queens, the Jocks and even the Nerd that likes serial killers and also lays down what the 'Rules' are for the TV Series. They even use the same premise of the "Sins" of the Mother following her Daughter 20 years later. As I said, very familiar stuff here and yet, there was enough in the first episode to make me want to stick around for a while. Not really digging the new 'Ghost Face' killer mask. The new mask is a more "realistic" take on the iconic mask. With all that said, this Pilot felt more like I was watching Friday the 13th because most of it was set near a lake (all intentional). Very curious to see if MTV will have the balls to push the gore factor of the show. If NBC can do it for Hannibal, why not MTV?

Episode 2
Hello, Emma

I know not to expect much from the TV Series or MTV because I know they aren't going to push the envelope here. It's gonna come down to creating perfectly timed scare moments and that's my one "issue" with the first two episodes so far. There aren't any. Yet. Even if they never really deliver in the scare department, which I'm one that doesn't scare easily at all, I'm more concerned with the writers telling a good story and shooting it in a solid way. So far, so good. As I said before, it's all too familiar, knowing the "beats" and whatnot. But I'm enjoying the series so far. With that out of the way, I will go on record and say that the killer (or killers) will turn out to be a chick just to differentiate from the films. The reason why I alluded to two killers is that if one is a girl, then she would need another person to stage the suicide hanging and lifting a person is too heavy for one person. But two can easily handle the job.

Episode 3, 4 and 5
Wanna Play a Game? / Aftermath / Exposed

Binged-watched the last 3 episodes available and now it seems like they are are auto-pilot already. I kind of expected it given that they have to stretch this out for a full season, but I was hopeful they would try to make an effort to do something different with the genre and format. Anyway, some really awful dialogue here and the way they are delivered by a couple of the actors had me rolling my eyes in how bad it was. One thing that I've always found to be funny (intentional or not) is how the Slasher/Who Dunnit genre has a reliance on making EVERYONE bad in some way so as not to tip off who the killer is. Watching these 3 episodes was laughable in how hard they are making everyone the potential killer. Episodes were entertaining enough, but I found myself laughing when I should be jumping out of my seat with terror. So far there hasn't been one scary moment at all.

Episode 6
Betrayed

Meh. They are on autopilot right now, stretching this out for how many episodes they have lined up. Still waiting for 1 scare moment. I think having the series on a network like MTV is doing more harm than good given how bloodless this is turning out to be.

Episode 7
Betrayed

Finally something happens and boy, was it ever a doozy! But before we get to that, most people seem to be raving that this is the best episode yet for the series based purely on the final 15 minutes. Granted, it does redeem what has turned into a very lackluster series. My biggest peeve with this episode and anyone that says this is a perfect one is the first half hour. It had some of the worst dialogue and acting scenes ever....especially the scene with Brooke confronting her father about the whereabouts of her mother. This was awful in every way imaginable. This first half hour had me ready to write off the show in spite of being so close to the goal line. But it's what happens at the end where MTV finally pushes the envelope in a way I never saw coming. It's the murder of Will that has everyone talking...or to be more precise, the manner in the way he goes. Getting chopped up by what looks like one of those dirt grinder machines and basically having his body splatter hamburger meat onto Emma's face, with her mouth wide open was disgusting to say the least. You see bits and pieces of what was once Will in Emma's mouth. Yuck. Now we don't actually see the 'grinding' as it was done off camera. MTV still has a long way to go with what they are willing to show. But I will say this is a start and may in fact give the series a shot in the arm that it needs. Only 3 episode left, so I expect them to ramp this up on the way to the Finale. Am I the only one that thinks that Brandon James is Emma's real father, which is something I've suspected all the way back to Episode 2 I believe.

Episode 8
Ghost

Not sure why I fell for this thinking that they would ramp this up given the ending of the previous episode. But nothing really happens here at all. Really slow episode. One thing I will say is that I've always suspected the "Reporter" as being one of two killers. But now I think she is the half sister of Emma, the one that was given up for adoption and who's father is Brandon James. Who the second killer is, I have no idea.

Episode 9 & 10
The Dance / Revelations

After a strong start with the first two episodes, the series flat-lined. But then there was the gruesome manner in which they killed off Will, which offered hope the show would be on the upswing. Well, the final two episodes just showed more of the same which is to say, nothing. I only stated with the show for the duration because I had to see who would be revealed as the killer and it really wasn't worthy of my time. Yes, I was right that it turned out to be the 'Reporter' Piper and that she is in fact Emma's half sister. I maintained all along that there would be two killers and the epilogue hints at that fact, which of course sets up Season 2 (already renewed). The TV Series isn't bad, it's just meh TV. The problem is stretching out a tired and well-worn genre concept into a full season which makes the middle episodes very lackluster. As for now, really not intending to come back for another season. But then again, I may find myself bored and no other TV options.

I mean I know it's shows are, but does this have any substance?

The middle of the seasons are somewhat dull because they are stretching a movie concept into a full season. They tip their hats off way to early.....and easily as to who the Killer is. By the time of the big reveal, you already know who it is.

I haven't seen the show yet, but if they'r ethinking in three-act structure, I can see those episodes becoming real bores.  I noticed with Game Of Thrones that the seasons are laid out like five-act structure movies, with each episode being half an act.

A five-act structured movie (like T2) breaks down like this:
intro-conceit-turn-spiral-climax.
and each act breaks into rising and falling action
and it means you've got a consistent pace throughout the whole thing.

So the first ep of Got is intro rising, ep 2 is intro falling, etc.  This is why all the big episodes are always the ninth episode, that's where the climax of the movie is.

But a ton of movies use the three-act structure, which bloats up the middle of the movie, it takes much longer to do one thing.  Imagining this stretched into a couple episodes.. that kind of gives me the willies.
