Red Letter Media's wrap-up of Discovery and The Orville

Lots of interesting points made... feels very close to what I was thinking.

And now the full season one reView of Discovery by Red Letter Media.  haven't seen more than one episode of the show but I know so much about it.

And I love their bit about "Admirals are all *ssholes."  Favourite dumb Trek trope.

And a rundown of all the Trek Easter eggs in season one

You know what still really sticks in my craw?  The Force Awakens.

Follow me on this:  JJ Abrams made TFA and it fit in the universe and aesthetic of the Star Wars universe perfectly.  And he also made Star Trek which FLUSHED everything (except Enterprise for some reason) out of the airlock and we're STILL dealing with that ten years later.

Star Wars was three movies.  The Trek universe... even just the Next Gen era... has TWENTY FIVE SEASONS of shows, of characters and worldbuilding and aliens and a visual aesthetic and that all doesn't count?

I've become VERY nostalgic for Star Trek in the last day or so.  Maybe it's because I was watching Beyond Belief (with Jonathan Frakes aka Commander Riker), but Geek and Sundry has a Trek RPG series that I saw a clip of and they're all wearing Starfleet uniforms.  I never wore a Starfleet uniform, I always wanted to.  A proper, fitted one and not a baggy thing.  It's the kind of thing I would treat myself to except I know I'd only wear it once so I can't justify it.

I still say a break was what the show needed, it had been going from 1987 to 2005, but regardless of how good or bad Discovery is, I think I speak for a lot of fans when I say that's not Star Trek.  When we want more Star Trek, we want more of this:

So, I take it that JJ is persona non grata within the Trek community then?

Oh man, you have no idea.  We haven't been in the TNG timeline since, what, 2002?  I grew up on TNG man, it was one of the only shows on when I was young so I stuck to it like glue.

My issue with a lot of the current Star Trek iterations is that the moral center of it doesn't seem to be there, it's all adventure and trying to be bad-ass which was never what it was about.  So my hope is that bringing Stewart back into the fold will help them adhere to that because god d*mn we need that now.

Now imagine Picard being that dedicated, that right, that determined to see the truth and justice prevail, but not having the power of a galaxy class ship to back him, no crew, maybe even no rank.  Powerless, the way WE feel right now in our currently insane world where we're just drowning in the sh*t.  But finding a way to prevail.  Don't we need that now?  Don't we deserve that right now?
