The Girl – HBO

The low star rating is more for the subject than movie. Meaning, portraying Hitchc ock as a slimeball definitely was hard to watch.

This year seems to have movies focusing on the life of Alfred Hitchc ock. The Girl is the first out of the gate. I was highly interested because we are talking about an iconic man with legendary skills as a film director. The Girl is the period of time Alfred Hitchc ock was directing his next big movie (after Psycho),  The Birds, and using an unknown aspiring actor Tippi Hedren. You get to see some of the thinking process of Hitchc ock the director, but this was mostly about the relationship between director and lead actress.

This is not a pretty thing. Alfred Hitchc ock is an odd man, but it becomes even more apparent when you focus on him in a social environment and not just cameo appearances. Maybe it’s the intent of the movie, but Hitchc ock comes off as a very creepy disgusting man. Lots’ of Hollywood power that goes after what he wants, even clearly in front of his wife.

There are many times Hitchc ock just stares. I find that uber creepy and apparently he had a penchant to recite limericks. Some relevant to what’s happening, other times just mean. Tippi Hedren is obviously between a rock and hard place. First it takes a little time to understand Hitchc ock's ulterior motives, then she needs to decide whether to continue and risk her future because he tells her he will make sure she never works again.

I’m torn. This is not a feel good movie. It peels back the blackness of what most people consider a great man. In one way it’s like watching a train wreck. I know I will never revisit this movie.
