The Girl - Alfred Hitchc ock

Quote
“Brit stars Toby Jones and Sienna Miller play Hollywood icons Alfred Hitchc ock and Tippi Hedren in “The Girl,” an upcoming HBO movie about the relationship between the master of suspense and his notable leading lady that premieres October 20.

And if you thought Hitchc ock’s films were intense, Jones tells the site, wait until you see the legendary director’s obsession with then-showbiz neophyte Hedren unfold on screen. The actor, whose career includes The Hunger Games, My Week With Marilyn and W., notes that Hitchcock first noticed the blonde beauty in a commercial and soon wanted no one but her to play The Birds’ lead Melanie – a part Hitchc ock referred to as “the girl.”

“He knew every single aspect of filmmaking, and I think he thought, ‘Well, I’ll just make her into a good enough actress,” Jones says. “‘She has limitations as an actress, but I’m so able and so practical that I will be able to transform her to my needs.’”

First teaser...

October 20th

Quote
It’s no secret that the BBC and HBO make some of the finest television around, and so when the two partner together for a feature film, with Toby Jones and Sienna Miller in the leading roles, you know it’s going to be good.

The film is due to air on both channels in a few months’ time, and now HBO have released a rather excellent first teaser trailer for the film.

“Alfred Hitchcock (Toby Jones) was at the height of his fame and creativity when, in 1962, he chose an unknown fashion model to star in his most ambitious film – The Birds. But as he sculpted Tippi Hedren (Sienna Miller) into the perfect Hitchcock blonde of his imagination, he became obsessed with the impossible dream of winning the real woman’s love. His failure arguably destroyed both of their careers.”

Julian Jarrold (Becoming Janes, Brideshead Revisited) is behind the camera, directing from a script by Gwyneth Hughes (Five Days), with Imelda Staunton, Penelope Wilton, and Candice D’Arcy completing the cast.

The Girl is set to be broadcast on HBO on 20th October. No official word yet when it will air on BBC Two, but I’d imagine it will be around the same time, if not the same day. For now, enjoy this very promising first teaser trailer.

Added this to my Hold List since I don't have HBO. I don't want to miss this one.

The Girl – HBO

The low star rating is more for the subject than movie. Meaning, portraying Hitchc ock as a slimeball definitely was hard to watch.

This year seems to have movies focusing on the life of Alfred Hitchc ock. The Girl is the first out of the gate. I was highly interested because we are talking about an iconic man with legendary skills as a film director. The Girl is the period of time Alfred Hitchc ock was directing his next big movie (after Psycho),  The Birds, and using an unknown aspiring actor Tippi Hedren. You get to see some of the thinking process of Hitchc ock the director, but this was mostly about the relationship between director and lead actress.

This is not a pretty thing. Alfred Hitchc ock is an odd man, but it becomes even more apparent when you focus on him in a social environment and not just cameo appearances. Maybe it’s the intent of the movie, but Hitchc ock comes off as a very creepy disgusting man. Lots’ of Hollywood power that goes after what he wants, even clearly in front of his wife.

There are many times Hitchc ock just stares. I find that uber creepy and apparently he had a penchant to recite limericks. Some relevant to what’s happening, other times just mean. Tippi Hedren is obviously between a rock and hard place. First it takes a little time to understand Hitchc ock's ulterior motives, then she needs to decide whether to continue and risk her future because he tells her he will make sure she never works again.

I’m torn. This is not a feel good movie. It peels back the blackness of what most people consider a great man. In one way it’s like watching a train wreck. I know I will never revisit this movie.

That that's not encouraging. I was looking forward to checking this out.
