For those that don't mind spoilers, here ya go. Me, I'm not gonna read this. Wouldn't have expected them to even have an episode ready for NYCC. Lucky bastards.

Mulder, Scully and Jimmy Kimmel in The X-Files

The jokes are telegraphed a mile a way, but it's still pretty funny none the less.

My first thought was that Mulder would DESPISE the iPhone.  He would be so paranoid about the world we live in now.  You think he was a nutcase then?  Now all his worst fears have come true.

But yeah, that was cute.  I only wish that the Mulder/Scully moments were clearer cause I imagine tons of fans would want to GIF-ify them.

So, I've been hearing some bad worth of mouth about the first episode of Season 10 and it's really starting to paint this as a bad decision to bring it back. There are a couple of reviews by IGN, THR and other's that got access to the episode and it's basically the same type of review: Underwhelming, flat, boring, lacking the magic. etc....You get the idea. I'm still going to watch this, but my enthusiasm for this has tanked. Sigh.

The return of The X-Files is tonight! I actually thought it was next Sunday. So, this is a nice surprise. As I mentioned in my previous post, the first episode leaves a lot to be desired. I'll be the judge for myself. BUT, I've heard the second episode getting RAVE reviews this past week. Most are saying it's one of the best episodes ever for the entire series. Now THAT'S an endorsement I can get behind and why I'm stoked that it's premiering tonight.

Episode 1
My Struggle

I am completely at a loss as to what the f*ck these so-called "industry insiders / reviewers" are b*tching about. Man, they could not have been further off the mark about the return of X-Files. Granted, this opening shot was and is meant to be a setup for the remaining 5 episodes that will make up this 'Event'. I actually thought it was a solid episode story-wise, although it did cover familiar ground where Mulder is questioning his whole existence and the Government that he worked for. Sound familiar? There's a lot to like about this episode. For starters, it felt like the show never left. All the hallmarks that made the show what it is, is still there. Hell, they even used the same opening credits (I for one was worried they wouldn't so as to mark the passage of time). The relationship between David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson still has that spark, even if they are always at odds with each other. Without spoiling it for anyone yet to watch this, the final shot of the episode had me grinning from ear to ear.  ;D I was waiting for this. But they need to do some serious explaning tomorrow night in Episode 2!!!! So, yeah, X-Files is BACK and my enthusiasm for this just went way up. Disregard anyone that says anything bad about this episode. So NOT true!! Loved how they opened up the episode for fans and non-fans alike to get all caught up on the history of the series.

Episode 2
Founder's Mutation

Ya know, when I first heard that they were bringing back The X-Files, my initial thought was that this was going to be 6 episodes of non-stop mythology episodes that make up the bulk of what the series has always been about: Government conspiracies and Aliens. So imagine my surprise that in Episode 2, we get a hard left into what I will say is the other half of the series: "Monsters of the week" episodes and it f*cking rocked. Well, "Monsters" is kind of pusing it, but you get what I'm staying as it felt like a stand alone episode that will no doubt tie into the bigger picture by the end of Season 10. And based on Scully and Mulder pondering what their life would have been like had they kept William instead of giving him up for adoption, this 'Event' is going to most likely be about finding and reuniting with him.

So I watched, on demand, the first episode. Like Chip says, they’ve not missed a step getting back to the series. The look and feel is awesome, like a pair of old jeans.

Chip, you mentioned "industry insiders / reviewers" are b*tching about. I’m not sure what the b*tch is. But if I were to critique it on this one episode, I was not embracing the ‘questioning his whole existence and the Government’ angle. That sounds all too familiar with ‘It was all just a dream’. Now that would seriously p*ss me off. It’s fine it’s just  a small part of story line, meant to divert attention, but if it’s major, I would have a hard time going back to the original series and movies.

Otherwise, I’m good so far and excited to see the following episodes.

Note: I only saw the first ep, so I'll not read the other reviews until I see them.

I actually expected the whole "questioning his life's work" to be implemented. With the amount of conspiracies swirling around him and the lack of tangible answers in the world of X-Files, it makes perfect sense that he would begin to question his own path. It's what the series is fundamentally built on. So, I have no issues with this in the first episode. But I get where you're coming from and I think that this angle was put way out there in the way it is to let new viewers who have never seen the original run jump on board from the "start", so to speak. We know the history of the show, but they do not and it helps them get on board. Just my take of how I'm looking at it.

Interesting perspective. I like it. In fact, I asked the wife, what she thought of the episode... she liked it. I told her the series was very much like what we just watched and if she's interested in checking it out. Gave me the thumbs up.

on a business note...

Those big X-Files premiere ratings were no fluke (man)

Monday’s second episode delivered startlingly large numbers too: 9.7 million viewers – and this is the really impressive part – a 3.2 rating among adults 18–49. That’s from airing 8 p.m. last night, so there was no lead-in (unlike Sunday’s debut which had a run-up with the big NFC championship game). In fact, in its new regular time slot X-Files crushed CBS’ Supergirl (1.8 rating) and ABC’s The Bachelor (2.3 rating), and was the highest-rated broadcast program of the night.

The revival also helped give a strong launch to Fox’s new supernatural drama Lucifier at 9 p.m. (7.1 million viewers, 2.4 rating). Lucifer ranked as the night’s second-highest rated show (despite getting pretty weak reviews).

X-Files creator Chris Carter previously expressed confidence that Fox would order more episodes beyond this six-hour revival run if the ratings were strong. Fox likely wants to see how the remaining episodes perform, but this is a terrific start on a network that’s struggled all season to find a breakout fresh title. In fact, the X-Files’ second episode back just performed better than any of Fox’s new series debuts this season (for instance, it’s nearly double the premiere of the heavily buzzed Scream Queens). Meanwhile Lucifer just tied the premiere of Rosewood, which was paired with Empire.

And you know what the X-Files performance means, right? Especially given its ability to help launch a new show like Lucifer that had such low expectations? That’s right: More revivals and reboots! Sure, everybody scoffs online when yet another revival title is announced but … overnight numbers like this are very hard to come by nowadays, and this performance will send executives diving back into their libraries wondering: What else might work? But before they get too excited, we have two words of caution for them: Minority Report.

You know, by the end of the second episode had ended, I kept thinking to myself that X-Files is more relevant now than it has ever been given the climate we all live in now since the show went away. There is so much to draw from, story-wise, that can be told because of the absence. Also, just having this type of show on-air is needed. It still feels original and will standout more now among all the other shows that are drafting off each other. Same premise, same locations, same blah blah blah. Welcome back Mulder and Scully!

So to be clear, this is 6 episodes with 1 & 2 on Sun, Mon respectively. 3, 4, 5, 6 are the following Mondays.

That's a question.

I know it's just one episode per week from here on out. Just not sure if it's Sunday or Monday.
