Actually, ID4 and Close Encounters borrowed from this.  And 2001 is the same writer.

As for the twist at the end, well, I read the book and I've always been curious to see what a film version of... that... would look like.  To say nothing of what's coming up in episode three.  I figured that would be the thing that kept this from ever getting made.
