Rammbock: Berlin Dead

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IXStTttwV4

I had heard about Rammbock sometime ago in the horror forums. Getting good buzz. In fact, it garnered a sequel, which I believe was recently released.

I caught Rammbock on Netflix the other night. First I was surprised it was presented with subtitles. I thought most of the movies got the English treatment. I guess not.

Rammbock is done well. Unfortunately there is very little new here. Especially in the zombie genre. Rammbock does have interesting characters to keep it moving, but I was saying been there, done that. So it get a big meh from me.
Despite the ending really taking a hard left turn and sucking. I wonít give it away, but there was at least two elements where you will roll your eyes in disbelief.

I just read what I wrote. Believing in a zombie movie. Well, you know what I mean.

Absolutely intentional. It's nothing but parody and spoof.

Watch the trailer... it will let you in on the tone of the whole movie.

Detention of the Dead

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wS66fv-BXAA

Let me start off by trying to get Chips attention, because Iím thinking heís not all that into horror movies. Well Detention of the Dead is horror/comedy flick and think, The Breakfast Club with a very dark sideÖ zombies.

I was rather pleased to be entertained by Detention of the Dead. I went into it with some hope of, but would not be surprised if it sucked. I donít think it did. Iíd watch this again.

Seriously, all those involved must have tackled this by watching The Breakfast Club over and over and then adapting zombies to the film. With tongue firmly in cheek, they pull off the very hard project of not being too serious and not too silly. Just enough blood, guts and gore for zombie fans, enough humor to entertain both sexes and itís well written, well because it closely follows a classic filmís script. The production value is top notch. The zombies were rather impressive. I was over impressed with the soundtrack. I didnít recognize a song, but loved just about everything they played.

If a studio is going to attempt reboots of sort, this is a prime example of doing it right. Different than the original, but a good, solid, entertaining story.

I highly recommend for goofy, yet entertaining fun.

You got my attention. I wouldn't say that I'm not a fan of the Horror genre. It's just not at the top of my list. But your review does intrigue me and I like seeing genre mash-ups, which this clearly fits into. So yeah, I will check with my library and see if they have a copy of it.

No copies in my system. Is this a new release? If yes, then that would most likely be the reason why there isn't a copy. Just based on past history of when you watch new titles, my library is usually 4-6 months behind you when it comes to new titles.

This is rather a new release.

My library does not have it either. I got this On-Demand from one of the premium channels.

Since I'm doing a write-up on it for GoIntoTheStory, I popped in "The Professional" (I haven't watched it in a long time).  I accidentally selected the theatrical cut on the menu and I don't even remember the last time I saw THAT version (probably not since videotape or when it was on TV).  Dang good movie, I really don't want to say too much because I don't want to use up all my juju here and not on my assignment, but I tell you, it's going to be hard not to just write a thousand pages of analysis and praise on this flick.

Grudge Match

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bQSOBJCPQE

Grudge Match is pretty much what I expected. I wish it could have been better though. The whole movie is composed of one idea about getting two iconic celebrities together in a faux rivalry for a boxing match 30 years later. I imagine this looked good on paper. I did not find it all that interesting to watch. Yep, itís two elderly men pretty much forced to finish an ongoing indecisive boxing match. Thankfully the movie focuses more on the character, more so than watching them prepare for the fight. These men are out of shape and itís not really to fun to watch.

If you can believe it, Kim Bassinger is cast as an old love interest for Stallone. YeaÖ maybe. But dayum, Kim has not lost any of her beauty. She looks fantastic.

Alan Arkin does what he always does. Kevin Hart is the only one to bring LOL humor to the flick. Sorry, but Robert De Niro needs to stay away from comedy.

I give Grudge Match a solid Meh. It wasnít horrible, but itís no big deal if you miss it.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones For the pretty young ladies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6DYsGTMkCU

The fifth in the Paranormal Activity series, takes a serious hard right from the formula of the past flicks. Normally I would applaud this, but unfortunately, they did everything wrong possible. The Marked Ones takes a novel approach by going into the Hispanic community. This brings fresh faces and a new perspective on how a culture approach the paranormal. The minor fault here though is too much emphasizing.

The past 4 flicks were very similar in formula. I liked them though. There was slow reveal of creepiness. And the part I loved most where the static cameraís monitoring rooms and we as the viewer just paint the screen with our eyes to figure out what ghostly thing was happening.

None of that here. All gone. Not static POV. Itís all shaky cam. Which then brings back the very tired question of why are you filming certain scenes when clearly your life is in danger or there is absolutely no reason to be holding a camera. I know why its doneÖ to tell a story, but the reasoning just diminishes credibility thus scariness.

And for some unknown reason they pus elements of ďChronicleĒ in this movie where one of the characters gets super powers. Yea, he can fly while skateboarding. WTF?

They introduce a lot of unexplained things, that just ends. Never follow up with it in any sense. gahhhhh

The Marked Ones really fails. Itís lazy. Itís not scary. Itís not interesting. Weíve seen it all before.

So yea, I was going in kinda expecting some goodness because of the different direction. Unfortunately it falls on the other side of the fence and splats with a loud thud.

The New Daughter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a2rBUA7hrA

Most of the New Daughter is a creepy little fun flick. A throw away movie Iím sure Iíll forget in no time, but rather enjoyed the ride. It slowly builds up to an eye rolling conclusion, but Kevin Costner does a great job of making this all believable. I guess you could classify the New Daughter as horror film. It does have those elements, but I see it more as a thriller.

Iíd never even heard of this 2009 film. Not a bad little find, I accidentally ran across. I would recommend for a couple hours of entertainment.

August: Osage County

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Hd_uO72h1s

I picked this up solely on hearing buzz about it. I knew nothing going into it. The cast looked phenomenal.

Iím not going to rate this. Primarily because just a few minutes into it, I knew exactly what kind of film it would be and that makes me severely biased. I just hate these kinds of dramas and my slamming it with a bad rating is not fair in the context of it all. It just would show I didnít like the film. I think it won OscarsÖ I dunno. I donít care either. I just did not find this film entertaining in any way. I think Iím discovering that about myself. Flat out dramaís just donít move me. But August, actually is worse because it hits to close to home with reality. I donít need to sit and watch more of what is going on in my life. I guess Iím strange in that way.

I found this film to be a microscope on dysfunctional family with everything but the kitchen sink thrown in. Some very ugly people with meanness and lies dictating the dialog. I just didnít find this enjoyable in any sense.

I will give kudos to the actors for letting themselves be displayed in the worst light possible. Not only physically, but in their portrayal of bad people. This made me think of Kramer vs. Kramer years ago. Back then a movie like that was representing current real world thoughts. It too was too close to home. My parents were not doing well and on their way to divorce. Why would I want to sit down and watch a movie about the same thing happening in front of me? Itís ugly.

So, for me personally, I hated sitting through the mud slinging. But that shouldn't impact someone else wanting to see this.
Ignore everything I just said.  :o
