What a fantastic opening for Season 5. I really like that the show has now shifted to a dystopian world in the future with no music, being run and controlled by The Observers. For the first four seasons it was a "Where's Waldo" game in trying to find an Observer in the crowd, in this future they are everywhere. I thought the reunion between Olivia and her now grown daughter was pretty cool. I thought having Walter wandering the streets at the end, finding a Mix CD and playing it was a nice touch. Love the song they went with, Yazoo "Only You", which for me is synonymous with The Office BBC.

Wow! Just....wow! In Absentia is both deeply moving and compelling and in a way emotionally satisfying. It's not shocking that Eric Lange brought his A-Game in the role as Gael Manfretti, Loyalist guard for the Observers. He was nothing short of amazing here and brought a humanity to a character hardened by the choice that he made to save his save, but at the cost of his own soul. The counterpoint to his decision is if Etta will go down that path in the ways she combats Loyalist. The ending was very rewarding because she sets him free and he makes the choice to right his wrongs. Also cool is that the writers have set up some future McGuffin's as they hunt down Beta Max Tapes that hold secrets that can change this future world being run by Observers.

Eric Lange is best known for his role as Radzinsky on Lost (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/lost-(season-5-2009)/msg11922/#msg11922). Speaking of Lost, I liked the little nod to the series when Peter and Walter peer down into the hatch when looking for the Steam Tunnels that run under Harvard School.

We are only 3 episodes into the Final Season and this is already turning into my favorite season already. It's deeper and more emotional with everything tying into family and survival and fighting the good fight to take on and defeat the Observers. I really liked the scene between the father and the little boy, River about being a hero and being a coward. And then to see the father make the ultimate sacrifice so that he could give his son a fighting chance with a future that he could thrive in was very profound,

The kid playing River reminding me of the kid in Touch. They both look alike, But then when the kid started doing the voice over narration, you could not help but see the similarities between the two. Loved the comic book that River drew of the Fringe Team, especially Walter as the "Mad Scientist".

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn! I did not see that coming at all. I just assumed that Etta would be there at the end when this was all over. So, having Winmark, the Observer killing her was a total shock and one that caught me off guard. Well, she may be gone now, but I think the objective has now changed. Peter, Olivia, Astrid and Walter will stiil try to save the world and rid the planet of the Observers, but their quest will be to return back in time to before Peter and Olivia lost Etta in the first place. So, they will in effect be able to get that chance to watch her grown up which would be cool. I really hope this is how they end the series because if they can't reunite with Young Etta, it's going to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Also, it was about time they brought Agent Broyles back. So glad to see Lance Reddick return. Another stellar episode.

Another home run of an episode as Peter fights back and hits the Observers where it hurts most by disabling their Wormhole for transportation. Oh so they thought. In a desperate move on Peter's part, he comes up with the idea of jacking the tech out of a captured Observer and implanting it in his own neck to level the playing field so to speak. Now, I do think this was a cool idea and probably the only way the Resistance could conceivably overthrow the Observer Regime. But I've always wanted them to be able to do so with their own human spirit and ingenuity instead of having to rely on technology that wasn't their own.

I loved the scene of Olivia coming to terms with Etta's passing while watching an old home video of a young Etta at her Birthday Party and calling Peter, begging him to come home because she loves him. The way the episode ends is pretty riveting to say the least.

A good episode for sure, but there was a lot of walking in circles. Literally. Yes, that was the point of it all, but it was kind of frustrating at times. Another thing about the 'Pocket Universe', with the Observers popping in and out, it was very reminiscent of The Matrix (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/the-matrix-(1999)/msg8259/#msg8259), not to say that this was a bad thing. Just an observation is all. Hell, even Peter with the use of his newly implanted tech in the back of his neck has suddenly taken on the characteristics of Neo. He's 'The One'. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_biggrin.gif) He even sees 'Blue' (Instead of Green).

One thing I gotta point out or something that is nagging me. I think the little bald kid is actually September.

If you must know, the episode title refers to William Bell's Safe Combination number. Another solid episode all around and one that answers one of the big questions about the Observers: Why are they bald. But first things first. The entire episode is basically tracking Peter and the longer he uses the tech that he implanted in himself, the more he begins to take on traits that are the hallmarks of Observers, the way the talk, the way they move and now the way they look. Earlier we see that the tech is definitely having a physical toll on Peter as he starts to bleed from his ear, but its at the end when Peter runs his hands through his hair, leaving a clump of it in his hand. He's losing his hair and soon he will look just like them. It was nice to get Nina Sharp back into the fold, even if she has aged quite a bit.

The Human Kind

I love the symbolism of what the bullet that Olivia has been carrying for the last few episodes and how it factored into the plot in a big way in The Human Kind. The bullet literally saves her life and in the end is what's saves Peter's life now that Olivia was able to bring him back and give up the tech. Also, Jill Scott did a great job as Simone. I don't think we will see the character from here on out, but it would be cool to see if there was a bigger plan that she plays in the demise of the Observers since she can see the future in a way. But with Peter now at a disadvantage of foresight in killing Windmark, maybe it's her ability the Human resistance will come to rely on and use to their advantage.

With Walter dropping Black Blotter Acid, this opens up the episode to be one of the oddest episodes in the entire series. Odd, even by Fringe standards. If you remember the animated episode from a few seasons back you should have an idea what this one is like. I did get a kick out of Walter's minds eye when he was trying to remember the secret password as it took on the look and feel of The Beatles Yellow Submarine animated cartoon with live action cut outs. Very interesting episode for sure and not bad by any stretch at all.

Now THAT was a fantastic episode!! I knew instinctively that once Nina returned here to help the gang and the boy that her time on the show was coming to a close. I also knew that she would be "interrogated" by Windmark and that the only way out, the only way to save the gang would be to end her own life so that she couldn't be read and give away their position. None of this was a surprise. But she did have a great final scene where she basically points out the flaws of the Observers about them being animals. It was great. Even though Windmark didn't show any outright emotion to her revelation, you could tell that he was insulted...because he knew her to be 100% correct.

The big reveal comes at the end when we find out who 'Donald' is. It's none other than September. I had thought of this twist back when it was first mentioned there was a 'Donald', but I never went any further than this. But that didn't keep me from wondering if we would see September one last time before the series ends. It's safe to say, yeah, we will. Very cool.

Well, it's finally revealed what I have suspected for quite some time now. Eradicating The Observers from existence will reset everything, which means that Etta will be coming back and reunite with Peter and Olivia. What I didn't expect (but make sense now that I think about it) is that in order for any of this to work, Walter will have to make the ultimate sacrifice with his life. He needs to go out like a Hero and basically redeem himself for some of the things that he did in the past, in effect resetting his mistakes that he more or less brought about through his tampering of worlds and parallel universes. Big reveal is that we find out that the little Boy (Michael) is actually September's Son and that by send him into the future, it will change everything. I wasn't expecting him to be caught by Windmark at the end of the episode. Well, he wasn't caught as the boy gave himself up willingly. So, me thinks the boy has something planned.........

Liberty / An Enemy of Fate
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_10star.gif)

As a die-hard fan of Fringe, which I've been with since day one, I was always worried that the series would not give me a satisfying conclusion to what is one of the best damn shows I've ever seen. It was a very real concern for me that the finale just wouldn't deliver given how complex the mythology of the show is. How can anything really measure up to what's been an awesome 5 year run that always managed to outdo itself each season.

Well, having just gotten finished watching both Liberty and An Enemy Of Fate, I can honestly say I have never been more satisfied in wrapping up any particular series. This one had it all. Liberty was fantastic. The entire rescue of the little boy was very entertaining, edge of my seat drama. But it's An Enemy Of Fate that will leave you breathless. You have to be a fan of the show and know all the ins and outs of the characters to really appreciate what is being given to us in the Series Finale. Even I couldn't keep from getting misty eyed....more times than I thought I would. It was a very emotional send off for one of the main characters and a reunion of another, which is something I called way back earlier in the season. God, I'm gonna miss this show big time. Both episodes get 5 Stars each. Hell, they get 10 Stars!

Thanks for a great 5 years!! Everyone involved with the show did an amazing job! Your legacy is secured. Bravo! (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/notworthy-1.gif)

Finally finished the series... I'm actually trying to remember what the heck happened in the other seasons, I remember wide swaths of storyline and lots of gore (hence the "don't eat while watching Fringe" rule) because the fifth season is so different than the others-- no science experiments and so on.  It's actually what I imagine NBC's Revolution being like.  The black market scene actually made me think of what little Dark Angel I saw.

I enjoyed the series (though probably not as much as, say, the war between parallel universes, which was a TV concept *I* had but they beat me to the punch, but they did a much better than I ever could have) but I can't wrap my head around WHY the Observers took over 2015 in the first place... it's my Red Dawn problem all over again.   Why did they come back, what did they have to gain, and what was the point?  And I'm annoyed whenever we see fascist forces in the future and they dress like Nazis from the 1930s.  Especially here when the Observers are based on the 60s, they're VERY Twilight Zone.

Oh, I've gotta call you out, Chip: the Black Blotter sequence isn't Yellow Submarine, it's Monty Python. You heathen.

There was one scene where Windmere jumps to 2609 and we get to see the future (including the floating title translated which I thought was a brilliant touch) and it reminded me of Enterprise and I kept thinking it's SO weird that these guys would have done a brill job with that series (which also had time travelling invaders, parallel universes, experiments and stuff) but they DID Star Trek and it wasn't barely as interesting as this.  I just thought that was weird.

I also thought it was weird that they had full run of their lab with the lights on and loud equipment and it didn't draw any attention after they aged up that one guard.  Hard to believe that.

Sure, if you look hard enough. Well actually, you don't have to look all that hard, you will find lots of holes. I don't even remember anything about any Yellow Submarine. I am drawing a blank on that. Anyway, I'm gonna have to revisit this as a whole. Even though I loved pretty much everything the entire series had to offer, it was and is a very dense series that casual viewers would not be able to jump into the middle off. No amount of "Previously on Fringe" would fix that. I watched every episode as they aired, but during the summer hiatus, I would forget huge chunks of plot that had happened the previous season. So, I am definitely gearing up for a Fringe Marathon. I just have to wait for the price drop for the Complete Series. As it stands now, it's still out of my price range, even though it's on "sale". Once it gets down to around $70-75 range, that's when I will grab it.

Okay, I got a couple of watches going on for the Complete Series on eBay. Plenty of bids right now, but still relatively cheap. The price will definitely swell as the auction gets closer to ending 4 days from now.

The Futurama ep "Bender's Game" has a great Yellow Submarine tribute animation.

I wanna watch the whole thing again just cause I love Walter Bishop so much (I love that in the first episode he wanted a cow just to watch cartoons with it).  John Noble got to do so much with Walter, he starts as this hurt, scared, lost individual, then you get Walternate who's cold and cruel and you realize just how much range all this actor can bring to the table.  I also just adore Parallel Universe Astrid, she's so cute!  Actually dig all the actors in this, I really do hope that they all do something together again like a romantic comedy or something, they're fun to watch together and so bloody talented.

I have to say one of the things in the series that won me over was the opening sequence, at first I didn't get it, but then we start seeing these alternate versions (I love the VHS-y 80s version) and I "got" what it was supposed to be.

The opening Theme is awesome. FYI, it's done by Andrew Kramer and you can find a boatload of his tutorials here (http://www.videocopilot.net/blog/2008/09/fringe-intro/). Whenever I'm looking for something good to try out and learn on After Effects, his site is the first and last place I go to.

Speaking of the gang working together again, John Nobel hinted at Comic Con that the idea that a film is a possibility. Yay!! One last thing, this past year at Comic Con, it didn't feel like the Con of years past. I had seen them every year for the past 3 years at the FOX booth signing autographs and roaming the floors. This year, it felt empty without them. Sigh. I miss my Anna Torv.

I was about to say that I did my own take on the Fringe titles (http://neumatic.deviantart.com/art/Fringe-1776-300088437) but it had to be stills only since I don't have AE or anything like that.

There's this series on Netflix that Noble did, it was kind of like Beyond Belief and he was doing a total Walternate, and it was all this hooey they were trying to pass off as secret science (stuff like Stalin's monkey soldiers) and the greatest part was John Nobel saying, with some intensity, "he inserted slices of monkey testicles into men's scrotums.  The results are promising."

(fixed)

I've been tracking a few Brand New Complete DVD Sets on eBay the last few weeks. They start off veeeery cheap and as always, a ton of people come in and snipe at the last second, driving the price up big time. They have been selling Brand New around the $50-60 range, which itself is a pretty solid deal when comparing it to Amazon. I'm just waiting for that one auction that I can walk away from it literally stealing it out of the Sellers hand by getting one for $25-30. Now THAT would be an episode worthy of Fringe!!!!!!  ;D

No, the Fringe-worthy ep would be the one where you get all the blu-rays of the series dirt cheap and then jaunt back from the future to yourself after you saw the first episode for the first time, then gave yourself the entire series right then and there.

That's how I would use time travel.  I would cheat and get myself toys ahead of time.  The ultimate early Christmas gift.  Haven't really figured out how to turn that into an interesting movie.
