I had seen a couple of print ads for Last Resort but it didn't do anything as far as getting me wanting to check this out. It wasn't until I read a blurb in Entertainment Weekly in which the show was described as a cross between Lost and Crimson Tide. I get the connection Crimson, but there was nothing remotely similar to Lost. Well, there was one thing that kinda hinted at near the end with one of the Soldiers that piggy backed on the Sub was babbling about....something. Same with the guy in the bar. But other than that...nothing else.
The premise seemed interesting enough. With the crew of the Colorado Sub being targeted for a "frame job" or something like that, this sends them on the run to where they take refuge on an Island (there's you Lost connection). I like the actors involved and the Pilot episode was good enough for me to invest in this a little bit longer. Andre Braugher and Scott Speedman star, with the show from The Shield creator, Shawn Ryan.

Based on this episode, I think we, or at least I, get a better idea of what the show will be about. With the Unit now stationed on the Island, people will be heading to capture them. Duh. The twist in this one is what is perceived to be an American Unit coming to kill the 'Good Guys', turns out to be another country that is trying to steal the Sub and gain access to the remaining Nuke Warheads on board. So now it's going to be pretty much everyone coming after them. I really liked this episode and this is an improvement on the Pilot episode. The other good thing they are exploring is motivation of some of the Soldiers and some of the Soldiers are going to become a liability because they can't be trusted.
Still not getting any 'Lost' connection. Maybe the PR department and the press went there just because they are stationed on an Island. But as of yet, there is not weird or supernatural stuff happening. Not entirely sure if there is suppose to be. But when you compare it to Lost, you are going to get the same questions about it.

Awesome episode. I was curious just how much 'Submarine' time we would actually see on the show once they docked on the Island. We get our answer with this when the crew is tasked to do a drug run in exchanged for 3 captive soldiers, contingent on them making the deadline. Throw in a couple of battleships tracking the sub and you got the makings of a very tense episode. I won't tell you what happens next, but lets just say that we have a Villain that just p i s s e d off the wrong people.

It took 4 episodes and the very last scene for someone to finally address the "mystery" of the Island. Although nothing concrete was said, the implied nature of the conversation does make anyone that has seen Lost take notice. I did get a chuckle from the line "...you have to protect the Island". Come on, that was just way too close to home. I was expecting Ben Linus to walk out. I thought the stand off in the Sub was pretty good. A lot of tension. Solid episode.

This episode was fricken' awesome! I would never have guessed that a negotiation between all parties involved, asking for their surrender would end up in a blood bath and that the man behind the trigger would be Rear Admiral Arthur Shepard (Bruce Davison) as he takes out the mediator as well as shooting the Secretary of Defense William Curry (Jay Karnes). I guess every man has a breaking point and threatening the life of his daughter Lieutenant Grace Sheppard on board the Submarine is the pressure point to make a man snap. Fantastic episode all around.

Another Fine Navy Day

That was a kick ass episode with some very good writing and editing. With everyone on the Island and the Sub being drugged, it causes a panic attack of illusions. Everyone reacts a different way, but the two main stories were the most compelling here. Captain Marcus Chaplin dreams of being reunited with his Son and Lieutenant Commander Sam Kendal with his Wife Christine. What makes this really cool is the fractured narrative of how they present the timeline and the story. The ending with Sam and Sophie kissing was a good twist. But the question is, how is this going to affect them? I think it's gonna change Sophie more, given the coy smile she had on her face when she saw the surveillance footage of said kiss.
Also cool was realizing that David Rees Snell is on the show. I didn't even recognize him at all in the scenes that he was in up till now. It's no surprise that Shawn Ryan is adding cast members from The Shield. I approve.

Now we are into the cloak and dagger stuff back home, planting that device in that "Lawyers" car and intercepting his calls. Seems like they (whoever they are) is using his kid as leverage. As for the missing key, I suspected that it was Cortez. Sure enough, it is. The bomb vest was pretty intense.

This is the kind of episode that you watch and get p i s s e d off at knowing the end of the series is just a few short episodes away. A fantastic episode that added even more elements to an already compelling story line. So one of the soldiers is excused of raping one of the Islander Girls and is now being forced to stand trial. The reenactment of said crime wasn't what I thought it was. It was actually of a **** involving Grace Sheppard who is being asked to defend the accused. He is find not guilty, but we learn after the fact that he is guilty of the crime, which has him fleeing for his life on the Island while be pursued by the villagers. It just p i s s e s me off that ABC decided to cancel this awesome series. Ugh!!

If the previous episode wasn't enough to get your blood boiling toward the stupidity of ABC cancelling Last Resort, then Cinderella Liberty is sure to make you pick up an Ax and starting hacking away at those responsible for pulling the plug on this awesome series. This episode in particular was f u c k e d up with the amount of incidents that went sideways. We finally get the answers as to what the Navy Seal team did prior to being picked up on the Sub which led to all of this. Even the back-story of the actual incident went sideways and had a ripple effect that directly affected the current situation on the boat carrying the family members of the crew. The full hour was thick with tension as I didn't know myself how they would get out of the situation. Another moment that goes sideways is Sheppard finding the Launch Key mysteriously hanging on the door hook, but now is looked upon as the mole because she found it. Talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place. Awesome episode.

Another great episode that sees the Captain entertaining the idea of creating an alliance with China, Sam finally reunited with his Wife Christine and the problem that is "Prison" control is finally addressed. I was wondering just how much man power the Captain would be able to spend on watching and feeding the prisoners who seem to be multiplying at a faster rate than Gremlins. Lashing is the order of the day. As for Christine, I knew that what's his face had staged her death so that he could profit from her capture later. Bastards gonna pay once Sam finds out!!

Another awesome episode. I just don't know what was my favorite part. A lot of **** went down in this one. You have the meeting taking place where the higher ups are plotting to arrest the President and then having to kill one of the Generals who was going to blow the whistle on the whole plot. You had the showdown between the Submarine and the Destroyer on whether or not the Captain would have the balls to fire on his own kind. He does. And then you have Cortez, who was sent to assassinate the Captain finally making a decision on which side of the line to stand on. Just a great hour, full of high tension.

I'm watching the episode and the entire time I am waiting for things to go sideways with regards to the Coup of arresting the President. I was on pins and needles. What I didn't see coming was Ernie Hudson's character admitting that he conspired with other people for the coup and then taking out a gun and blowing his head off on the senate floor. Also, watching the impending mutiny transpire over the Submarine had me on the end of my seat. One last episode next week and I can't see this getting a proper wrap up. I'm afraid we are going to left with a major cliffhanger. Sigh.

My biggest fear heading into the last episode of the series was that of unfinished business. I was so worried that this would turn into another Las Vegas debacle with no resolution, leaving the rest of us to wonder "what happened then..." Well, it's safe to say that this series finale won't be up there with the worst send-offs ever. It will actually rank up there with one of the best. Yes, the final 5 minutes was pretty much everything that would have happened eventually. But ending it the way they do gives me and the series a swan song that you can feel good about. I liked the last episode enough to actually say that I will be picking this up on DVD when it's released. Fantastic and very entertaining last hour. The acting by all was superb. Yes, there were a couple of instances in this last episode that were highly implausible, especially Kylie being able to sneak a gun past all the President's men and get close enough to actually kill him. But I don't care about implausibility when I want resolution for a show that I absolutely love. So, I will let that slide for sure.
One last thing as I close out this review.....
FUUUUUCK YOU, ABC!!!!
-
Hate to do this, but given that this series is now officially in the books, time for me to move this to TV's Greatest Hits and Misses, emphasis on Greatest.
-
I guess I completely missed the boat (so to speak) on this one.
Chip was giving this some major man love.
So did it just end? If this ever came to Netflix, would it be worth putting in the time?
-
They had enough time to craft a series finale that wrapped up everything in a nice bow. It was clearly rushed, meaning they HAD to do it since there was no other option but to speed up the process to get us there. For what it is, it's one of the better series finale given that they were forced into doing just that. I for sure would watch it again if I ever came across it. If I saw it on DVD for sale, I'd probably buy it.
