The Road Warrior was my Terminator (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/the-terminator-(1984)/msg5410/#msg5410) movie long before there was a Terminator. Sure, they have absolutely nothing in common other presenting me a futuristic world that was both fascinating and scary at the same time. It's crazy how a movie as low tech as The Road Warrior can feel more futuristic than a lot of movies with lasers, blaster and aliens. Another crazy observation about this movie is how "simple" and bare bones the plot is. It's all about getting and maintaining possession of the most precious commodity left in the wasteland: Fuel. Even more mind boggling than that, if you really look at the movie as a whole, very little is said, especially by Max (Mel Gibson).
Along with such a basic plot and very little dialogue, you also have 95% of the entire movie taking place in one location. So, how do you keep a one-location, simple plot moving along? You give us characters that engage and keep you interested. Give us characters that you can't turn away from and that you have to watch no matter what. As charismatic as Gibson is as Max,he can't carry the movie alone. So, enter one of the coolest looking villains to come out of the 80's. Actually, two cool villains. You have The Humungus played by Kjell Nilsson and the even better character of Wez played by Vernon Wells. This character has been voted one of the greatest villains of all time on a lot of similar themed list. How awesome is this character? Awesome enough to find Wells playing a similar character in Weird Science (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/weird-science-(1985)/msg1924/#msg1924).
Out of these 3 characters, who do you think is the best? None of them! That honor goes to the awesome Feral Kid played by Emil Minty!! Even when I was a kid seeing this movie for the first time, the Feral Kid was just a character that had to be seen to be believed. His laugh and grunts made me a believer. I really thought he was like that in real life. Still a hoot to watch him all these years later. The Road Warrior was in instant classic back when it first came out and it's now a movie of legend. This will rank up with the greatest of all time in the Sci-Fi genre. Hell, it's up there with some of the greatest films of all time!! Period! Timeless classic. I highly recommend this as a Buy. Duh!!
