I decided to do a random pick at the library and just grab a DVD off the shelf with no forethought of what I was reaching for. The only criteria was that the name of the movie should feel like it belonged as part of a Halloween movie marathon. I have never heard of The Resident until I had the copy in my hand. I purposely chose not to read anything on the back cover and avoided reading any "blurbs" that may have been on the front cover. The name certainly fit and the Cover Art design did tell me that I was on the right track to this potentially being something 'scary' or a 'thriller'.

On to the movie itself, as soon as it started, I knew exactly what kind of movie it would be and some of the movies it took after. Single White Female and Psycho were the first ones that came to mind. But then about 1/4 of a way into the movie, it really gets interesting. Let's back up a bit first. The movie gives the viewer the typical "set up"....or what the perceived set up is to us. Later on we discover what the real set up is, which made everything that came before even creepier even though we know what is coming. Once we know what he is doing (which is clear from the start), it's just a matter of finding out why he is doing this and why he is the why he is. Sadly, we don't get any kind of explanation or payoff, even after Christopher Lee's character hinted at a connection between him and his father and the tragic end of his mother.

The movie is okay, but it delves into familiar territory that we have all seen one too many times. If you're looking for a Psychological Thriller, I think The Resident is worth a Rent. Just don't come into this expecting anything remotely original. Hilary Swank and Jeffery Dean Morgan lead the cast.

Never heard of it. Your review might hold the answer.  ;)
