El Mariachi is proof positive that 'Bigger and Louder' doesn't always equate to 'better'. The movie itself has taken on mythological proportions over the years because it made Robert Rodriguez a household name in his ability to mak a great-looking film on a shoestring budget. If you ever wanted to go to film school and becoming a director or an editor, save your money and just Buy this on DVD. It's literally a 'Film School' on disc. You can either watch the appropriately titled 'Ten Minute Film School' in which RR breaks down specific shots and whatnot, or you can just watch El Mariachi with the Director's Commentary and get all the information you could possible want as a film maker.

The movie is far from perfect and that should be expected given that RR was basically doing the heavy lifting and had only a small crew and cast to lean on. But what does end up on the screen is still damn impressive. And the most important thing is that the story itself was entertaining. A simple plot like '....a case of mistaken identity' can yield for more impressive results than something that is over-thought and overworked. Like I said, El Mariachi is definitely a keeper. My DVD copy is actually one of the oldest DVD's I have. I bought this during the first wave of DVD releases when the format was just introduced. If you like the movie, by all means check out RR's Rebel Without a Crew. It's a fantastic read that goes into great detail about the movie itself, how he funded the project and taking you all the way to the eventual Hollywood premiere of this 'little movie that could'. Along with the action set pieces, there are a few very funny moments, which may stick out like a sore thumb because it goes against the grain of this being a Crime Genre flick. But it still gets me to laugh said moments at the exact right time it's needed.

I miss the ten minute film school specials.  I grant you there probably isn't a whole slew of stuff left for him to put on there, but still, I feel like a little piece of communication between RR and his audience is lost without them.  It'd be like Kev Smith not doing his Q&As.

I haven't watched this movie in a dog's age.  I think the first time I saw it was on TV, it started right past the credits and I had no idea what was going on, but it had Antonio Banderas and I thought "okay, cool" then Steve Buscemi pops up and I'm all "sweet, I like him" and he talks to Cheech Marin and I'm saying "okay, now we're really cooking" then Quentin f'ing Tarantino pops in and I'm like "what the sh*t is this, how did I not know about this?" then Danny Trejo comes in and I'm thinking "don't go to commercial, don't go to commercial..."  Oh man, it was one of those happy discoveries watching TV late one night that used to happen all the time, you know?

All of that and more....Desperado.
