Playing Arkham Asylum and realizing that the Scarecrow Levels have been the best in my eyes and just look super cool on top of that, I sure hope to see a few similar type of Levels in Arkham City with that old-school, sideways game play.

Well, I finally got to try out the Demo for Arkham City yesterday at the San Diego Comic Con. What can I say? This game is **** awesome!!! Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick! The demo itself contained not One but Two working levels. The first Demo is something that everyone has already seen by way of footage released from E3 2011. It's the level that introduces Two-Face and Catwoman. But what you don't see in the videos is that it's much much longer. Time wise, I think it took 15-20 minutes to complete. The flying aspect of this level is pretty damn impressive and very additive.

The Cryptographic Sequencer Gadget is different this time around. It's has elements of the old one but is different in execution. Also, pretty cool detective mode play action in this level where you have to analyze a gunshot fired from a Sniper from an adjacent building that was trying to take out Catwoman. Once you discover it's trajectory, that's when you advance the 2nd half of this Two-Face/Catwoman level.

The other Demo Level is what I would call The Riddler Maze. This isn't the exact name of it. But since I forget to mentally take note of it's name, I am going with Riddler Maze as it best defines what it is. For this level, Bats has to make his way through a path, while avoiding the shock floors and spinning "wheel blades" as he must duck and jump over ledges, etc... Here you have to use the remote Batarang to get to veeeery hard to reach spots to knock out electrical boxes to turn off sections of the maze. I am talking about having to use the remote to guide the batarang under and over objects that are blocking your path. This isn't a direct line of sight toss here.

One of the coolest things I discovered during this level, even though I already heard about it through one of the Developer's Diaries, was that of the Zip-Line. When Bats uses the Zip-Line from Point A to Point B, you as the player and slow down Bats and turn left or right and look for a new spot and shoot another Zip-Line and change your direction mid flight. Think along the lines of Bats doing his version of Spider-Man and you get the idea here. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay cool. This level took about 15 minutes or so.

This was by far the longest Demo I've ever played. One thing I didn't like about the Demo is that during Detective Mode during the Catwoman Demo is that when you are out in the City, the skyline and buildings look really bad. Some sort of clipping. I'm sure this is just a bug that will get tweaked before the games release.

Other than that, THIS is the game to beat this year. The cut scenes are **** awesome! And this time, when you talk to guards, they don't look stiff as a block of ice as they do in Arkham Asylum. The facial animation looks gooooood. The whole game is sick!

I asked the floor person in charge of the game as many questions as I could think of. I asked about how many more gadgets Bats will have this game. He ALMOST let it slip the the exact number but then caught himself in the nick of time. All he would say is that it's a lot more. I asked about Robin as a player character and if Best Buy was the only way to get it. He said that for the time being, Best Buy has the exclusive, but that once that exclusive agreement expires, Robin will be available as a DLC. His words, not mine.

Downside to playing this Demo.....

The wait time for this game is gonna be even longer because I got a taste of the good stuff and I have nothing to play now that can measure up to it. Bah!!!

Oh, I forgot to mention in last post, I asked the Floor person if the Catwoman Level was what opens the full game. He said this level doesn't come about until about 15 minutes into the game. His words, not mine. It could change. Who knows.

Bah! I keep remembering stuff after the fact....

They also had the display for the Collector's Edition and it looks nice. The statue that comes with it is **** kick-ass! But, I'm still not gonna shell out $100 for it. Also in the display was the Xbox Controller Batman Arkham City Edition that is slightly shaped like Batarang. Not sure if this will be on sale or if this was just a cool promotional piece. If they do sell this, I am definitely getting it.

The core gameplay is pretty much the same throughout the 2 levels of play. There are a couple of new moves like take the baseball bat and using it against your opponents. I pulled this off a couple of times, but I honestly don't know how I did it. I'm **** awesome is what it is!!!!!!!!!   ;D

Also have to mention that in the Catwoman Level, you get to use the Silent Takedown with 2 Goons in front of you. You can take them out one at a time (but this will alert the other Goon to him) or you can take them both out with double tap of the Y Button to slam their heads together. Awesome moment!! I was giddy. ;D

Last bit of info...for the time being anyway. They gave me a free Batman Arkham City T-Shirt with Bats and Catwoman on it, and a free Comic Book (Part 1 of 12) for the series centering on the game, just for playing the game. Nice.   :)  The artwork is really good too. It doesn't suck. Not some cheap knock-off promotional piece either.

The Green one is the XBox Controller while the Red one is for PS3. Not sure what the deal is with the cord attached to the XBox Controller though. FYI, the one on display at Comic Con was all white with Grey Trims. It was in the same display with the Collector's Edition, so thematically they all looked to be part of a set, even though the Controller was in it's own case inside of the larger display.

FYI, along with getting a $10 Credit to future purchase on Amazon, the game will ship with the Batman: Arkham City Comic Book. What's unclear to me is if this is the Trade Paperback that will be released separately on the same day as the game.

We are just a mere two weeks away from the big release for Arkham City. I was just over at Amazon and just like it did with Gears Of War 3, I'm now starting to feel the pull of getting the Collector's Edition which goes for $99. I probably won't decide which way to go until maybe next week. I dunno. Bah!!

Regular Edition or Collector's Edition?

I went ahead and just Pre-Ordered the Standard Edition for Arkham City. It comes with a $10 Credit for next purchase as well as the Batman Arkham City Comic Book. I'm still unclear to me on whether this "book" is an actual printed book or if it's going to be digital. I'm hoping and prefer an actual book that I can put on the shelf with the rest of my books.

I was thinking about going to the Midnight sale and picking up this and Rocksmith but since the Target that I work at is in the same mall that the GS that I preordered from I'm just going to pick them up after I get out tomorrow at 5. This has been getting nothing but RAVE RAVE reviews, there 31 reviews on Metacritic and out of thew 30 reviews scores 13 of them are 100s the lowest is an 85. That is a pretty good sign this game is going to rock. There is no achievement this time for completing it on hard however there is a Perfect knight 2.0 and the game + feature that has a chievo attached to it.

Well, just based on the Demo I played at Comic Con, I came away from it incredibly happy and impressed. It was the best Demo I have ever played and knew this was going to be something special. I'm not at all surprised at the overwhelming positive reviews it's getting. What I am surprised is how calm I am waiting for the game to arrive at my door.

But that could change in 5 minutes though. I'm getting antsy.  (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/spinningaround.gif)

The Batman Running/Slide option is pretty cool.

Navigating around the City is taken time to understand, especially when you have to get to the next mission/objective. It's been fun getting there, if not immediately. There is always setting the Waypoint to help in that aspect too.

There's actually a couple of back and forths, playing as Batman and then Catwoman and then back again. There's riddler trophies for both Batman and Catwoman. One can not collect the others but they can be seen. Try and pick them up with the wrong character and you get a nasty ZAP!

I got the Hide and Seek achievement. But doing the Mr. Freeze Boss Challenge was a pain in the ass. Making my way through the Jokers hideout and came across the "sewers" and the one gate that is locked shut. And I'm suppose to use the remote control Batarang to hit the switch to open it. I kept nailing it and it wouldn't work. And then I just tossed it through the electric current which the Batarang absorbed and then the light went off in my head in what Batman was saying about an electricfied Batarang. Bah!! I need to pay more attention to what he is saying instead of trying to figure it out on my own.

Yeah there a massive amount of remote batarang stuff this time around. Just remember after you toss it let off the left trigger and then pull it again to put the brakes on it so its easier to turn and such. Theres quite a few riddler trophies that require the remote batarang.

I forgot to mention earlier that midway through the game (I'm only at 25%), so not really "midway". Anyway, awhile back it dawned on me that the Bat Signal was the Waypoint to navigate through the City. Up to the point of realizing this, I was constantly flipping in and out of the map to see where I was and where I needed to go. It was out of boredom of doing it this way that I just decided to go check out the Bat Signal for the hell of it and discovered what it was used for.

Bah!!
Title: Re: Batman: Arkham City

Yeah I noticed the Bat signal thing pretty early on. I thing I said to myself "Why does that thing keep moving???" Then DING.... oooooohhhhhhhhhh. Also that percentage you are seeing isn't the perctage you are done through the campaign it how much of the total game you have completed.
Title: Re: Batman: Arkham City
Post by: Chiprocks1 on October 24, 2011, 10:37:36 pm
Well the reason why I dismissed the Bat Signal early on was because of Arkham Asylum. I just figured it was cosmetic and nothing of practical use. Yeah, I include the side missions and all that into the percentage.

Making my way up Wonder Tower to confront Hugo Strange was really cool with all the ledge and tight rope walking. The confrontation was a bit anticlimatic. But the free fall out of the tower with Batman and Ra's al Ghul kinda of made up for the quick "demise" of Hugo.

I have nooooooooo idea how I was able to defeat Clayface on the first try. It was never ending. Definitely a much better Final Boss fight than what we got in Arkham Asylum. Having said that, I think it could have been a lot more challenging. There were Boss fights midway through the game that were harder for sure.

Loved the Joker Voice Mail with him singing during the credit roll.

Now I'm off to do the side missions. The only side mission I touched during the campaign was Bane and the Canisters.

Now onto the next wave I have to take out all those guards with Guns. It feels like I take out 10 and then look up and there's another 10 waiting for me. Bah!!! So far I've dropped the ball 3 x's.

Forth times a charm?

Maybe.

I find it funny that this mission is harder than the actual Final Boss fight against Clayface. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_shakehead.gif)

It was more like 8th times the charm. I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong. I kid you not, I took out at most 12 guards, and yet the other guards were multiplying, always leaving 6 actives guards (not counting Two-Face) patrolling the grounds. So this last time out, I took about 5 and just waited for the other guards to investigate the downed guard before making my move on Two-Face. You will have to knock him down 3 times to complete the mission. If the guards are far enough away from where your attacking Two-Face, it won't be a problem. If they are close by then you can't do it and avoid gunfire.

Stick around to the end of the credits. It's worth it. Also, the side missions, which I skipped during the campaign makes it feel like your still in story mode. It's awesome. Waaaaaaaaaay better than AA.

Wow. I only have 80 of 440 Riddler Trophy's. I would have bet top dollar that I had at least 150.

:::sigh:::

I gotta give it up for the brains behind this game for actually making a lot of them hard enough to where you have to figure it out on your own. I have yet to watch any YouTube videos that show what to do. I love doing this on my own.

So, I'm exploring Arkham City, picking up trophies, saving people and all that when I land on a water tower right next to the City's wall. And then I got to thinking, what would happen if I flew off the tower, over the wall and into Gotham City?

I won't spoil it for anyone that has yet to do this themselves, but it's pretty funny and a complete shock. I was like what the f*ck!

I absolutely HATE playing as Catwoman, its the biggest flaw of the game. Its pointless and completely takes away from the game. Her movements, her combat, everything is just the complete opposite of why I love the game. She can't take the least little bit of damage and the combat with the incredibly weak gadgets is just not fun. I'm going to drop the difficulty on this Two Face bs and move on to what I bought the game for, TO BE BATMAN!

I have a sneaky suspicion that Rocksteady will farm out the job to another studio with the intent of making a Catwoman game so that RS can focus on the 3rd Batman game.

Are you still on the Two-Face Boss fight?

No I had to read up on the Two Face fight. Apparently he is the weakest of all bosses so I hung off the bridge and pulled him off. He takes very few hits and when he goes down the bad guys disappear. I made quite a bit of progress for the time that I played. I cleaned up the Deadshot mission, the Serial killer mission, and the mysterious symbol guy mission. I did a serious fore head slap when he revealed who he was. The couple times I saw him and the sword I KNEW looked familiar and its just been a while since I'd read that story line that it just didn't click. Along the way I picked up some joker trophies, solved a few of the "scan this item to solve a riddle" recued the last remaining political prisoners, and got the 4th Riddler hostage. The to finish off the day got the 50x combo achievement. Yeah today I pretty much tossed out the window.

JFYI the number of Riddler things you have to collect/solve to access the 5th hostage, 320. Thats 320 out of 440. I'm just assuming the last hostage challenge is close to the last or on the last puzzle.

355 and counting. Just a couple more areas to get to. Those little green glowing guys really pay off. The markers on the map, unlike in AA, point to the exact location of whatever it is. When you are in an area with the balloons, penguins, or Harley intercom systems, those are marked as "breakable item" on the map.

400 gets you your show down with Edward and its funny! Just the trap he has set and the end result if you succeed. Its not real difficult to figure out how to solve this one.

Ok the run down on the fully 440. Obviously all the riddler trophies, and the riddles that have to be scanned to be solved. Then there's the balloons (jokers area), also in the steel mill the Harley intercom statues, I'll let you figure out how to destroy them. The Ceramic penguins (Penguins area), the tyger security cameras also need to be destroyed. There are boxes with hackable terminals that like the green glowing guys you interrogate will show you where all the cameras are in the area you found the terminal in.  Also the one that minght be the biggest pain in the ass is the combat "Riddlers revenge" challenges. Its the very last box in the menu that shows you how many of what ever you have gotten in a given area. The descriptions of some of the things you need to do can be pretty vague. Theres a couple that I don't know how the hell I'm gonna do them. The Catwoman trophies do count towards the progress to get the Riddler and are necessary to complete the whole 440.

I'm at 220. Bah!

Umaine, you're a beast!!

Even though I'm "only" at 220, I'm proud of myself for NOT giving into the temptation and searching on YouTube for walk-through's for some of the more difficult, head scratching Trophies. THIS is why I love the Riddles for this game. it blows away Arkham Asylum in every aspect. You really do need to think outside the box in your approaches here.

Also, even with the campaign long over, the game continues onward and feels like the "campaign" is still in full effect because you are getting additional "Boss" fights when you have to retrieve or rescue something...or someone. With Asylum, I always lost interest halfway through the Riddler's Trophies search once the campaign was finished. Not so here.

Some of these are far outside the box and can be down right controller breaking. Most of those involve the remote batarang. Had a couple of the glide from pad to pad ones give me fits too. The AR training challenges I don't think I'll be getting. I've tried a few outside of the initial 4 that get you grapple boost but after that they ramp up to the point that if you are off even by a fraction of a centimeter you fail.

I've done 3 of the first 4 and ironically enough, the one labeled AR 1 (I think I have it right) is proving to be the most difficult of the bunch. It's the one where I have to coast to the first ring and then dive bomb into the next 2 and then hit the 4th ring just before it goes into the Joker's Entrance. That's where I keep failing. I can never get to the end of the tunnel that has the 5th ring. I'm putting this one off to the end because I'm cussing up a storm and I fear that I will throw my controller at the TV, causing more damage than needs to be.

Well as soon as I can this game is getting traded in. The challenges have driven me to actually take a controller and almost crush it. Also the complete undoable catwoman story line in Game plus is just the stupidest thing ever created for a game. Catwoman should have never been put in the game to begin with, she is worthless. Unfortunately I didn't think to delete the catwoman add on before starting game plus and the game saved it at the Ivy part and removing the CW add on just causes the game to say you have to have it. I'm done with this game anything good about it has been ruined by the challenges. Its to bad they had to put something so terrible in such a good game. Monday its gone.

That sucks your trading it in. How many riddles are you at? I can only imagine how much harder they get the "closer" I get to collecting them all. I'm really not all that close when you look at it. Currently, I'm at 246. I have a long way to go.

Did you at least complete all the other challenges outside of the riddles?
Title: Re: Batman: Arkham City
Post by: Umainebearman on November 06, 2011, 03:30:58 pm
All of the "grid items" I got.  When you goto your menu and see how many riddler items you've colocted I got all of the. The in game challenges on the last page of that section Ive gotten. Its the fact that they FORCE you to do the Catwomen story line stuff when it should be optional really pisses me off. I can tell you if she's in the next one as a playable character I will most definately not buy it. At this point I'm thinking Robin would have been a much better choice.

The Predator, combat, and then campaign challenges are just stupid. Theres no room for any errors, they basically force you to do everything perfectly and I don't have the patience for that. Then theres the campaign challenges that force you to use modifiers and restricts the retries. In the combat challenges I can go round after round without getting hit and rack up huge multipliers and not come anywhere near the minimum score for a medal.

Okay, I'm in need of help doing the Deadshot Mission.

I've discovered the second body, followed the trajectory of the bullet up to the rooftop with the gun "scope" on the ledge. I've done the anaylzing of the substance. It's left me a magnifying glass on the scope and then.........

Nothing. I was expecting to follow the magnifying symbol down the wall, street, etc... to lead me to next target. But there is nothing. I'm just....stumped. I kicked the goons asses nearby thinking that would trigger something. Nada!

I think thats the one where theres a certain substance on the scope and theres only 3 or 4 places in the area where that substance exists. Those spot should be marked on your map to investigate.

There are some truly mind blogging trophies. One of the trickiest ones for me was on in the industrial district. There are 4 pressure plates surrounded and separated by a chain link fence. If you look at your surroundings and realize the equipment you have and skills you have you'll figure it out. Actually putting those skills and gadgets to proper use is up to you.

Just one clue that may make some things easier for you. When in detective mode seek out the green highlighted guys and interrogate them. They will unlock the locations of the trophies and riddles. Also next time you are close to some water toss one of those freeze grenades in the water and see what happens.
Title: Re: Batman: Arkham City
Post by: Chiprocks1 on November 18, 2011, 08:45:03 pm
Yeah, the Green guys are the ones I seek out now. I just bypass the normal goons if I can. I did start exploring the edges near the water with the glacier thingy and came across a lot of Trophies there. But I have only been able to unlock a few. The one that's really testing me is the cage on the water where you have to use the glacier just to enter and then it's all water to the right and somehow you have to get to that point and then up one level to get to the Trophy. Bah!!

Find a high point. You have to glide into that one. There is an alternate way to get into that one but don't remember how to do it, might be the line launcher.

I think your referring to the one where it's got the 4 Red pressure pads. I went up to the gargoyle and flew down into the opening, over the 4 pads and got the Trophy on my first try. The one on the water can't be done with gliding as I tried it before. The spot in question when I first come to it, I toss the glacier to the far end. Then I use the Tightrope launcher and jump off onto the glacier. Then it's turn right into the cage, also all on water. But because I'm currently on a glacier, I'm not alble to toss another one at the far end of this cage. So, the only option left is the Tightrope Launcher again. But when I'm gliding across and slow it down looking for the sweet spot to change direction, I never find it and always fall into the water.

Watching The Totally Rad Show's review of this game makes me want to play it all over again. Funny thing is, it's still in my console and I just played it last night. Still working on the Trophies which is hurting my head more and more trying to figure out. Anyway, back on topic, the one guy brought up his experience of having to play as Catwoman puuuurfectly about how it does come to a screeching halt when you in the zone as Batman.

I also still have Campaign Plus to get to, which is supposedly infinitely harder. This is what I have heard but have yet to see first hand.

If you do go onto Game Plus make sure you delete the Catwoman add on. Unless you are the most amazing Batman player ever then your game will come to a screeching halt when you hit the Ivy section. Maybe it was just me and my intolerance of playing as a bad ass super hero that can take a couple of shots but still get through. With Catwoman couple of shots and she's done even with the full armor upgrades.

How do you delete the add-on? Where is it in the main menu?

EDIT:

I just thought of something. What if I never had the Catwoman add-on to start the game, what would have happened with all the Trophies specifically for her character? Would they have just been reset as Green for Batman to pickup? I'm not sure if that would have been the case since a lot of her Trophies would require crawling on the ceilings.

Hmmmmm?

The Catwoman trophies are part of the Catwoman add on so if you never had it you would have never seen them. To delete it you'll have to goto the dashboard and find it in the Arkham City "folder" where you can view whats on the hard drive. The game will probably tell you its missing the add on but you can continue without it as long as you aren't into one of her portions of the game.

I work all that time to get there and then......nothing? What a gyp. The more I play these side missions, the more it's knocking the luster off this game. Well to be fair the Riddler isn't really what you would call a battle hardend fighter. So taking him down after getting near him wouldn't be that difficult. I wouldn't expect the side missions to be as difficult as the main plot anyway but some of them where interesting. Probably the Zsas telephone one was hardest for me because I hadn't bothered unlocking the grapple boost yet which looking back would have made things ALOT easier.
Title: Re: Batman: Arkham City
Post by: Chiprocks1 on December 13, 2011, 08:15:28 am
Well it wasn't so much the taking down aspect of the final Riddler/Hostage thing that I found so weak. It was the getting there I had a problem with. All we have to do is walk along the track and maker sure not to get in the way or slow down the guards to keep them from blowing up. It was just way to easy. I was expecting it to be like the first 3 Hostage situations but harder than the last.

And I forgot to mention this in the last post, but it dawned on me that the Riddler Hostage maze that I played as a Demo at Comic Con was and is nowhere to be found. When I realized I had one last one to complete, I figured this would be it. So, I was scratching my head that it wasn't and I'm unsure why it wasn't in the game unless it's a hidden/super hidden bonus or something.

Can't remember the exact dialog, but Bats was talking to Oracle with regards to Hush (the dude that looks like Bruce Wayne) and doesn't have the necessary tools to further analyze it and that he will save it for when he returns to the Batcave or something to that effect. So, naturally, I got excited that there would be a Batcave scene in the game. Sadly, it never came.

Yeah I think that was probably a tidy way of wrapping up the Hush story or the game since you kind of had to let him go. There was plenty of time spent on Hush and chasing after him only to mprobably have to beat him up would have dragged it on to much.
