Trailer

When the trailer first came out, I was very, very interested in seeing this. I never had the chance to see this in 3D on our IMAX theater as it was never up for consideration to be played on the lone screen. But I did however have this earmarked to check out when it came to DVD. I had totally forgotten about it's existence until it popped into my head and I wondered whatever happened to Metallica Through the Never. So, I put it on hold last week and I was shocked in how fast I got it a week later.

Based on the trailer alone, it sold me on it being something fresh, if not original. I will say that the trailer itself is very misleading. What you think you're getting isn't what the final product is. I for sure thought the "movie" portion would have more of a plot with a strong narrative. This is definitely a Concert Performance Film. The "story" aspect is really nothing more than a visual narrative to highlight the songs being played. Like I said, based on the voice over by the actor in the Trailer (which by the way has more talking than all of the movie itself) leads you to believe you are getting half movie, half concert. In a nutshell, this is a long form video more than anything, that is slick and sick (both positives here).

With that said, I still found a lot to like about Metallica Through the Never. Visually, it looks amazing and it sounds incredible on a Home Theater setup. I'm sure my neighbors were p*ssed off at how loud I was playing it. Hey, if you have a subwoofer, you have to use it right? Even late at night.  ;D  In hindsight, I really wish I had the opportunity to see this in 3D. Oh well. I would definitely recommend this as a Rent for sure, but I do believe that Metallica fans are going to get more out of this than say a casual fan. The music is relentless, the hallmark of Metallica's music. So, if you're not a fan, you may think it's a bit too much to sit through in one sitting and might have to break it up in sections. Otherwise, sit back and get immersed on a killer stage show that has a lot of production value going for it.

I am a casual fan. I can only handle Metallica's music in doses.

That being said, I am very interested seeing this. I've heard good stuff and your review confirms that. I would love to test out my home theater with this.

Well, I started Through the Never last night. The opening was very interesting. I liked the little story of the skateboarder.

I listened to only two songs thus far. I can tell you now, I am not a fan of those kind of Metallica songs. I do like some of their more melodic hits. The first two sounded exactly the same.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the filming. Now that is the way to capture a concert. Loved it, loved it, loved it. It works especially well for that unique stage setup.

I’ll continue to watch, but wish I had a fast forward button to the songs I really like.

I kinda figured that you would have to watch it in sections since the Speed / Thrash Metal songs would be a bit much for you, knowing your musical taste. But props for sticking with it regardless though.
