I love Sports movies. I love Football movies. I don't love When the Game Stands Tall. For starters, the movie relies heavily on "inspirational" words of widsom being delivered by the kids on the team and they come across extremely corny and forced. This may or may not have happened in real life of the High School team that holds the longest winning streak of 151 games. But in the context of this movie, the speeches are too much and it looks like the actors are trying their best to not laugh while delivering their lines. The other thing I had issue with was that the first 40 minutes or so, it seemed like the director purposely went out of his way to show as little actual football sequences as possible. The movie would have been better had they shown the team being as dominant as their legacy is. Instead, all we get are newspaper clippings and one short football sequence of their final victory before they lose. This really doesn't established them as a force of nature and lessen's the impact when that loss comes. It's not all bad. It's an average flick for me and somewhat of a disappointment. Worth a Rent and nothing more. Stars Jim Caviezel, Laura Dern, Michael Chiklis and Clancy Brown.
