Title: The VR Thread
Post by: Chiprocks1 on May 02, 2016, 09:53:37 pm
Oculus Rift comes to 48 Best Buy stores May 7th (http://www.engadget.com/2016/05/02/oculus-rift-comes-to-48-best-buy-stores-may-7th/)

Ya know, we have talked about Oculus Rift and other similar products in a plethora of different threads on this forum and I can never find the specific thread I want to comment on at a later date. So, it's high time it gets its own thread now. Better late than never. As for the news that OR will be hitting Best Buy stores this week, I can't find which 48 stores are part of this. I'm very interested in checking this out for myself. I've been interested for a long time. Even though the price is way out of my range, I still want to experience this in person. I have 2 Best Buy locations nearby, but with my luck, neither will have it.

Great idea for the thread. Like drones, I believe VR will be a growing thing.

I too would like to check it out. I did check out the high end curved 3D screens at BestBuy and it was fun. But... Not enough for me own.

I guess the cheapest option for me will be the VRPS4.

So, has anyone had a chance to check out some of the VR sets out there yet? Does your local Best Buy have one on display as mentioned back a few post?

Yes, the one I visited did...
...BUT!

It was not hooked up and not a freakin soul around to help.

Man, that bites. Well, at least your BB has a display. Neither of the BB's here have one. WTF.

My Best Buy has one, the Samsung one with the phone in it, I've stuck my head in a couple times, it's cool.  But it's all pre-recorded stuff, so it's like you're deep sea diving into a television... which is cool... but without a monster PC or something to render a game like Star Citizen or anything else, you really don't "get" what all VR can be.

The World's First Portable Theater! (Avegant Glyph)

Not a VR headset, but falls into the same category. This is definitely something I'm interested in. I see the Avegant Glyph being more / immediately accessible than the VR Sets. Until they have a substantial library of titles to choose from, I would go with this for the time being. Now if I had a Best Buy that would actually display this on the floor, I'd check it out for myself. Only downside (but expected) is the sticker price.

Very interesting review. First I've heard of this product.

I was out Christmas shopping today and came across the newly-opened Microsoft Store... looks pretty interesting, but right out there up front was their VR and I got a chance to try it.  A Hive Rift, with the controllers, the camera, the X-Box...

Oh man.  I think I mentioned that my big dream is to be in a movie.  Not be an actor, not be on set, be IN a movie.  And this was kind of that.  The fact that there was some screen-door effect probably helped in that regard, you do feel more like you're surrounded by a spherical screen rather than in an entirely different world (and it is weird that you can't see your own body), but I totally was just inside a cartoon.  It was a simple snowball fight and I swear I could feel it when they hit me with snowballs, even though there weren't any sensors.  The time cycle was also sped up, so while I started off at morning, soon it was night.  I could look up overhead and see the stars and a full moon and a few clouds pass by.  That was neat.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when we get force-feedback and find ways for us to touch with our hands rather than with wands, and for the visual resolution to pick up a little (slight issue: I can't squint.  I mean, I can squint, but it doesn't help me see any better in the distance, which I tried to do a few times).  But I can see this becoming VERY addictive.
