I was very much looking forward to checking out Kong: Skull Island because I wanted to see how it would stand (get it  ;) ) next to Peter Jackson's King Kong more than anything else. Now PJ's flick wasn't perfect, far from it. The setup took far too long and made it somewhat of a chore getting through and the casting of Jack Black was, is and will always be a peculiar choice for me even though I'm a big fan of his. But overall, I enjoyed the flick. The same can be said for Kong: Skull Island. Anything involving Kong in this flick is obviously the thing that will dominate your senses....everything else....not so much. I have problems with the human characters, which I thought were the victims of very lazy writing. I can't remember which review it was, but there was another monster flick that suffered the very same thing. I understand that both were about the monster and less about characters. But I also said that we have to have someone to root for during the movie. Everyone that gets killed in Kong: Skull Island didn't give me a reaction one way or another because there was nothing to grab onto emotionally. They were the typical cliched characters. Ironically enough, it's not until the end (right before the credits roll) that we actually get anything close to that while watching John C. Reilly's character being reunited with his wife and never before met Son. It was actually pretty good. Beyond character development, the flick was entertaining enough. I would say it's worth a Rent. Be sure to stick to the very end, past the End Credits for the bonus scene that clearly sets up a Sequel. King Kong Vs. Godzilla anyone? F*ck yeah! Now THAT is a movie I've wanted to see get made in this day and age and SFX. 3 Stars out of 5.
