Title: The GURU of VAI
Post by: boyinblack80 on January 05, 2018, 01:40:09 pm
let's do this....so many amazing Steve Vai lessons on Youtube...so much wisdom and not only guitar knowledge but just approaches to mastery of an artistic skill and creativity.

Here's a few to start it off...this can be our one stop Steve Vai guitar lesson center...and I think it will be bad ass.

Steve Vai vs Ralph Macchio Epic Guitar Battle (Crossroads Duel)

FYI, ya can't have a Vai thread without having the Crossroads Duel that started it all (in the public's mind that is).

funny story.

one time my dad came over YEARS ago and I happened to be listening to Vai.

he goes out of the blue...this sounds like that scene in CROSSROADS.  I was floored because the movie was like 15 years old at the time...and
it's not like he knows Vai or what makes him unique.  I was really impressed but my dad actually has always been a BIG music fan but more like the British blues and early rock

apparently Steve Vai was once Buckethead.  ;)

actually his hobby is bee keeping.  I knew I needed to add one thing to my "get awesome" plan.

note to self....gather bees and wear yellow.

Modern Primitive which Vai says is his favorite album he's done (and touring for the 30 anniversary of Passion and Warfare) he said most fans agreed.

I will say I do not like the first track very much but this playlist looks to have them all on it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UimYiaFfnqE&list=PLpu9wr5kdyTNnEVAtjPeq60KivUPEgaGi

and this ties in directly with that tour and this album release:

I just checked those two new guitar lesson videos Vai has up...you caught those crazy frets!  great eye.

I totally didn't notice that...although in my defense I was working and only listening!!

Steve has his fave and I have mine. Bar none...Passion and Warfare takes top prize.

As for the Frets, those aren't new. I actually saw them maybe 2-3 years ago in another video of his. He may have had them longer than that, but that's when I noticed them for the first time.

I normally check my subscriptions each morning for long videos (any content) just to have something new to work to.
I get sooooooooooooooo bored with stuff and really anything new that catches my interest (and hopefully is long) will do.

saw this and we had the thread so it was a must do.

it's really funny because I have 3-5 notebooks just like that from that era that have that exact same stuff in it. (not literally the exact but that first page
they show and even the handwriting looks frighteningly familiar!!)

so funny how even when you are from a super famous family and have one of the greatest guitarists as your teacher...it's so similar.

I wish they'd do a 2 hour movie...I'd so watch it a million times!!

(and hey as a bonus feature...include the lessons in that book!!)

I saw that pop up as a suggestion last night when I was watching something on YouTube. Oh it was Dweezil Zappa stuff!!  I was going to post a link here but I knew for sure you'd have already seen it!!  Haha.  I've not watched it yet I will maybe give it a roll today!!  I don't worry so much about Anderton videos getting pulled down!!  I kind of have a hunch I know how the interviews going to go because Vai generally tends to say the same thing.  Hopefully the captain has some good questions that will pull him in a different direction!!

Yes, it's a fantastic interview. I've always said that Vai is one of the very best and most entertaining people to listen to in any interview. He and Dave Grohl are at the very top in that regard.

Nikki is awesome. He's actually one of the coolest rockstars I've ever met. He actually listens to you when you're having a conversation, which is something that doesn't happen a whole lot with Rockers in general.
Title: Re: The GURU of VAI
Post by: boyinblack80 on April 09, 2018, 07:34:58 am
I remember you saying that.  Nikki seems like a genuinely kind soul.  It's amazing he had such an animal in him back in the Motley Crue heyday. I'm almost nervous to read the dirt because I don't want it to blow my image of him now.  Ha!

I follow Slash on Instagram and he really seems like a cool guy too.  He loves art and posting funny things. Like sci-fi ,fantasy, and horror art it's really funny.  He's as geeked out on that stuff as Kirk Hammett, and John 5

Never heard it before. Sounds like it's from his Flexible days. Not an outtake, but as if it was recorded in that same time frame. It's what I call his eclectic years.

I think it might be off a newer record but I totally get what you are saying.
it's not a "song" in the classic sense...but coming from Buckethead land like I am now...this is pretty tangible
and quite the tasty little 6 minutes of musical noodles.    ;D :( :-* :-*

he seems to enjoy the odd time signature and also chord voicings.

I got a notification through google of all things on my phone a couple days back about this/  I was fascinated with the stolen and missing guitars...the stories about them and pics are cool!!

I then went to strats for some odd reason...but I need to maybe just go in order so I don't miss stuff/

what was the most interesting thing for you so far?

Too many to name. But the one that I went to first was the Red Flame Guitar (as seen in the Goin' Crazy video) because I just wanted to see that he still had it in his possession. He doesn't have it anymore, but it was for a good cause why he doesn't as it was sold to help out his friend and also the luthier of said guitar. Also shocked to see that he doesn't have 2 of the 3 Heart Guitars either.

Steve Vai - "Bad Horsie" from the Harmony Hut

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pl46Qsk-Wvs

If you are living under a rock, you a missing out. Steve has basically being going LIVE every day on his Channel during the Lockdown and it has been fascinating to watch. Yes, he plays and this is taken from one of his LIVE sessions. F*ck man, I can't stress how lucky we are to be alive to witness him in all his glory. I've heard this song a million times and seen him play this more times than I can count and he still blows me away. Sorry Eddie....sorry Yngwie....sorry Satch, but you guys are just not in the same league as Vai. I don't mean that in a negative way. I'm just saying that Steve is on another planet entirely.

Steve Vai "Alien Guitar Secrets: EP7 - The PIA"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZvM43VGGes&t=5142s

What a fantastic episode. Man, I tell ya, what other guitar player out there is a virtuoso on the fretboard as well as an orator. This guy can do it all. I can listen to him talk forever. This episode is basically two parts. The first half, he talks about how to be in the 'zone' and how to just let go. Riveting stuff and very informative. The 2nd half of the episode, he talks about the history of the Jem (pre and current) and how it evolved into the Pia. I can definitely see myself watching this again. Highly recommend checking this one out. His running commentary of his Acoustic playing (The Moon and I) was was hella fun to listen to.
