I literally have not seen Pretty In Pink since the year it came out, and watching it tonight, I remembered nothing about it. How lasting was this one for me then? Not much. Let's put it this way, I had completely forgotten that Andrew "Dice" Clay, Dweezil Zappa, Gina Gershon and Kristy Swanson were even in this one. Yikes. They all look so freaking young! Even though this is a Molly Ringwald (Andie) vehicle, I gotta say that "Dice" stole the movie, basically playing his "Dice" character.

We all know I'm a huge fan of John Hughes and pretty much everything he did. But I can't say this is one of them. There are moments in the movie that I like and it's vintage John Hughes writing. But there were a number of factors that kind of crippled this movie in my eyes. First off, this wasn't directed by the man himself. That honor went to Howard Deutch. Next up were 3 characters that I found extremely annoying. Andrew McCarthy (Blane), James Spader (Steff) and Jon Cryer (Duckie). The first two were lifeless and had no redeeming qualities that I could even begin to relate to.

And as far as Jon Cryer goes regarding his character of Duckie, he really comes off as desperate, and more or less a loser. But having said that, he does have a few choice moments in the movie that actually adds to the film. The other two do not.

Now my biggest grievance with Pretty In Pink is the ending. It's so manufactured and goes against what everyone in the audience is waiting for: For her to end up with Duckie (in spite of his needy and stalking ways). The fact that they just had her end up with Blane (McCarthy) just feels so fake and desperate to cater to a "formula" of how it should end. Honestly, they should have stuck with the original ending.

Anyway, this is nothing more than a Rent for me.

Good read. With that said, I still don't think this is one of Hughes better written stories and I don't understand how it gets all the adulation from people given the issues I pointed out in my original review. I still say that Some Kind Of Wonderful (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/some-kind-of-wonderful-(1987)/msg12899/#msg12899) is the better version of the same plot. They got it right the second time around. Just sayin'.

I've still never seen "Some Kind Of Wonderful."
