"Look at all the people here tonight!"

I have to laugh because I've heard Dave's "Rap" so many times from countless other VH concerts that I can recite it word for word, even down to the midget walking out and handing him a bottle of Jack to chug.

Ha.

I had to stop work and put the pen down when Eddie's solo came on. It's a moment where you gotta watch what he is doing, kick up the feet and enjoy it. For those that looked at the Set List and say "where's Eruption?" Well, there are parts of Eruption scattered throughout his Solo Spotlight. But you're not gonna get the song intact as it was recorded on the album.

Van Halen (Live In Largo - 1982)

The quality is pretty bad. It's what you would call a vintage bootleg, never made for the buying public, at least not to my knowledge it wasn't. The audio has bad mixing problems and the video is grainy. The show itself is about as by-the-book-rehearsed as you're gonna get from VH. This was during the Diver Down Tour and I've seen a handful of different shows to know which ones are good and which are great. Although the crowd was into it and Dave was doing his thang, I prefer the US Festival Concert because it has a certain energy that this one doesn't have. So, this one was above average to me.

I can't complain about the Set List because it's all good in my book.

Actually, this album has taken longer than Chinese Democracy to come out. If you do the math, the last VH record to hit the shelves was...

1998!!!

What the phuck!

Tonight: Van Halen Live! (http://www.vhnd.com/2012/01/05/tonight-van-halen-live/)

I will definitely be tracking the show tonight through YouTube and looking for videos from the show as they become available. Will post more here in this thread as it unfolds tonight.

That is going to be a very cool event. I hope the lucky few are the real fans.

And I sincerely hope Van Halen (the band) does wonderful things. Like the one poster said, let the real music start back up.

I think those in attendance will be true fans. The bar itself was owned by Dave's Dad. So, my guess is that it will be packed with family and friends. Hopefully someone will have the balls to videotape and upload to YouTube so that I can fatten this thread up even more. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/HTL_biggrin.gif)

As excited as I am to see Roth and VH back, it STILL feels incomplete without Michael Anthony's involvement.

Well, that sucked in every respect. I do appreciate you posting, but that was unwatchable. I think it's funny as hell, I've seen this way too often, but the person is holding up their iPhone to record what's going on. They are watching the stupid little screen where the band is right there in your FACE... and you choose to concentrate on your stupid little toy. Dumbasses

I wonder if in such a small intimate venue, what the sound was like? I can only imagine ear shattering.

Your absolutely right that the quality sucks. I posted what started hitting YouTube. I'm hopeful someone there got some decent video and the entire Set instead of songs. If I find those and it's of better quality, I will post more. You wouldn't know it from here, but a lot of people were uploading Dave....talking.

ZzzzzZZzzzzzZZZzzzzzZZZzzzzz........

Yeah, that's what people want to see.

Van Halen - Everybody Wants Some/She's A Woman/Dance The Night Away (Live at Cafe Wha? 2012)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9QBxrzx1Tc

This is somewhat better in quality, which is being generous here. The downside to this 15 minute clip is the annoying twaaaat that felt the need to record himself singing along. I've never wanted to punch a face as much as his. Alex's drums sound pretty good but damn, that's the smallest kit I've ever seen him play on. Dave needs to turn on his mic. In all the videos so far, you can't hear him at all.

Van Halen to kick off tour, album in February (http://news.yahoo.com/van-halen-kick-off-tour-album-february-104416262.html;_ylt=AhH28ekFWT4qdw2o.tX0chJxFb8C;_ylu=X3oDMTNkODJ0MXRyBG1pdAMEcGtnA2VkM2M5MThkLTlhYTQtMzY4Zi1iZDdjLTk5NzI5OTc1ZTM4MQRwb3MDMwRzZWMDbG5fTXVzaWNfZ2FsBHZlcgNhOTRhMzdjMC0zODUzLTExZTEtYmZiZi00NzAxYjhiM2VlYzU-;_ylv=3)

Quote
(Reuters) - Veteran rockers Van Halen said on Friday that they will kick off a North American tour with original lead singer David Lee Roth in mid-February, shortly after the release of the band's first full album with Roth in nearly 30 years.

"A Different Kind of Truth" will be released in the United States on Feb 7 but the first single, "Tattoo," and its accompanying video, will debut on Jan 10. Roth's last album with the group was the popular "1984," released on Dec 31, 1983.

The band will be joined by Kool & The Gang for select dates on the 40-plus city tour, which opens at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky on Feb 18 with over four months of dates through the New Orleans Arena announced so far.

Tickets go on sale on Jan 14.

Van Halen's relationship with Roth has been a stormy one over the years. Roth left the band in a bitter breakup in 1985, only to rejoin for a performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1996, then quickly depart in another bitter split.

He returned to Van Halen for a tour in 2007-2008.

The band, whose early hits include "Runnin' with the Devil" and "Dance the Night Away," was among the leading rock acts of the late 1970s, 1980s and into the 1990s, when Sammy Hagar replaced Roth as singer.

Michael Anthony was the original bassist, but alongside Hagar he has joined another band, Chickenfoot. Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie's son, took over on bass.

I will say this about Wolfie's bass playing, it's much improved and dare I say...good. He's still no Michael Anthony in the vocal department, but the kid can lay down a solid bass groove with Alex and give Eddie something to work off of.

Good. It's obvious they have made choices which led them to unexpected areas. As long as it's good for us, I'm for it. I just hope they continue to contribute to good music and don't implode.
Title: Re: Van Halen Live
Post by: Chiprocks1 on January 08, 2012, 08:51:48 am
I am curious and can't wait to pick up the new album and see what the kid can bring. The only "negative" thing about the new album is that it's not new material. The songs from what I have heard from others talking about, are old. We are talking about songs that were written, going back as far as to the bands inception. The only thing missing were the lyrics and of course the vocals. So any ideas about the 4 of them getting into a room and writing new songs here is a stretch. Take this with a grain of salt as it hasn't been confirmed or denied yet.

From stereogum

Quote
Earlier today, Van Halen released the video for “Tattoo,” their first song with David Lee Roth since those cuts from Best Of Volume I. But as it turns out, that new song might not actually be a new song. According to Rolling Stone, former Van Halen singer Sammy Hagar, the guy who replaced Roth when he parted ways with the band, claims that the forthcoming album A Different Kind Of Truth is made up of songs that the band wrote back in the early days: “Ed and Dave didn’t actually write new songs. They took old stuff from previous sessions, and then maybe Dave had to go in and add vocals because they just had scat vocals, or even no vocal part at all.”

When the band announced the new-album plans with a quick set at New York’s Café Wha?, they debuted a song called “She’s The Woman,” which actually appeared on a 1976 demo. And as some fans have noticed, “Tattoo” sounds pretty similar to “Down In Flames,” a song the band played live but never recorded. Below, listen to “Tattoo” back-to-back with a version of “Down In Flames” that they played on New Year’s Eve in 1977.

Maybe a little underwhelmed coming out of the gate?

The first single tattoo is ok. It does sound like 35 years ago. For some that's great, others may be looking for something, uh, new.

Well, I think they have to, even if they didn't want to. We need to see what VH can do with a new batch of songs that aren't 30 years old. All I ask is that Eddie doesn't go back to the Keyboard-Well this time.
Title: Re: Van Halen Live
Post by: boyinblack80 on March 25, 2012, 10:37:43 pm
yeah I mean it may take a year or two....what's super scary is just how much of the VH music did Sammy write while in the band.....Eddie may not have been writing as much back then...especially as the records went on...

as long as Eddie stays healthy I think there's no limits for him....if he and Dave can get along and write together....we should be very happy.
Title: Re: Van Halen Live

Well in all the Live footage of VH on this tour that I've watched, Eddie seems genuinely happy and seems to be getting along with Dave. They are interacting on stage and that's something you can't fake if you hate the guy off stage. Also, with Wolfie in the band, he can be a strong anchor for Eddie to stay sober and get his  s h i t  together and write songs. I would think writing with your own Son would be a hell of a motivating factor here.

David Lee Roth on cancelled tour dates: 'The band is getting along famously' (http://www.nme.com/news/van-halen/63902)

Dave is now into spin control. I think VH is officially done. I think Dave's video is nothing more than a stall tactic so that he can work things out with the VH boys and convince them there is too much money at stake. Whatever happens, I'm sick of this dumb  f u c k s  constantly jerking the fans chains. It was reported in Rolling Stone Magazine that there is a lot of infighting going on. Duh.

Think about it. If Dave and no one else is trying to squash these "we need a rest" rumors, it's all be sure to be the end for the band. Where is Eddie? Alex? Wolfie? Valerie? Anyone other than Dave to address this. I would think they know better than to tempt fate with the fans and they should have done a group PSA announcement,

if there truly is no in-fighting....then the travel is just to stressful and exhausting for the guys....I mean they are older...and touring is a GRIND.  It's just drive drive drive, sit around, play, and then do it again....you do that for a couple of months....sitting around the house sounds amazing.

I saw an interview with Joe Bonamassa at his house, and he goes "hey this Joe, and we are filming me at my house....(pause) this is so weird....not taping here....being actually in my house"

these guys from the outside seem like it's the greatest thing ever...the reality is.....it's 2 hours of fun 4 days a week...and the rest is awful and boring, and just not where I think a lot of them want to be anymore.

I think honestly...the reason so many of these young bands can do it...is because they are wasted most of the time...it makes it all fly by.

sober...it's a lot of bullshit

you know back when this came out it was a nightly or near nightly ritual to get home from college around 10 PM (night classes baby!) but yeah I'd pop open a bottle of jack...suck down a few shots and watch this....I loved it then and still do....would it be as killer as maybe a pro-shot 1980 live VH show with Dave at their prime....no.  But we never got that so this was to me a prime example of how strong this band could be without Dave....and I know they even got better.

Mikey's bass solo is hysterical...and almost a waste of 5 minutes....same with the drum solo....for whatever reason Alex's solos have never done much for me....but the songs are so strong....it's great seeing Mike is CLEARLY buzzed by the end of the set!  he's having a blast and so am I  :)

and Eddie shreds throughout (he's at top form here for sure...he seems sober and very happy and healthy) , Sammy sings perfectly...and the songs are all really kick ass.

I'd give this a 4.5 out of 5.

I've NEVER been a fan of Alex's drum solos in concert. And what's worst is that it always happens right after the 2nd or 3rd song. Seriously, who signed off having the drum solo that soon into a concert?

As for Mikey, I loooooove his bass solo!! It's  f u c k i n g  entertaining as hell and a drunk Mikey, even more so!!

well I did see them on 5150 which was super amazing...Eddie was really at the top of his game.

I knew back in 1984 how bad they could be live...I didn't want to risk it.

Now and I hate to say it...I just don't want to see them because I feel like they **** over Mike, they have been total dicks the last 15 or so years.....I don't which version of them I believe in....are they the guys who fired Sammy..or not.

I believe Sammy...who lies about getting fired.

hahahaha

Oh, I never ever doubted Sammy. I always knew it was Eddie, with Alex nodding his head in agreement in the background that pushed Sammy out of the band. But talk about sour grapes man. To literally  f u c k  Mikey over as they have done just to get back at him for wanting to remain friends and work with Sammy is about the most childish thing I can think of. And these are grown men here.

Sammy has said that one day he and the VH boys will eventually do another album, but its with a stipulation that Mikey is part of it. I don't get how something as "trivial" as wanting to remain friends with Sammy is a BIGGER issue to Eddie than any of the  s h i t  that Dave did back in the day. See? It's a little off in what Eddie is willing to forgive with Dave, but not with Mikey. Go figure.

I never saw the 5150 Tour live.

yeah that's what I am saying....I remember the interview SO clearly with Eddie and Alex talking **** about Sammy....and I agree...why isn't Mike on this tour...because he's friends with Sammy?  I mean come on....

it's a joke....I do love all the guys...but it's tough to watch this fake version of the band in some respects....
I do really like the record...and maybe in some alternate universe the tour would have been a little more appealing to me.

Dave kind of gunks things up...as happy as I am he's there....something just isn't right with the whole thing.

you know it literally might just be there's no Michael Anthony....that's a HUGE loss

It's a MASSIVE blow for me. It's why I didn't give a  f u c k  about the Tour a couple of years ago. I love the album for sure, but without Mike's involvement, I didn't have an overriding desire to see them on this Tour either. Having said that, I will definitely be searching YouTube tonight and tomorrow in the hopes of a Full Concert presentation from the show here tonight. That way it will be like I actually went, but saving a  s h i t l o a d  of money in the process so that I can donate it to your "rebuilding the Guitar Room" project.

I'm surprised that they have 4 new songs off the album in the set. Not that they don't deserve to be there, it's just that most bands usually only have 1 or 2 new songs and just play the old stuff to fill out the set. So, I give this Set List an A+. Yo, I tried watching the Live In Pittsburgh show and all I was getting was nothing but deep bass. So much so that Eddie, Dave and everything else was drowned out by it. It might be my receiver. Not sure. I was playing with the settings, but it wasn't doing anything to improve the sound. Is it Bass-heavy on your end?
Title: Re: Van Halen Live

will have to check.

yeah Eddie was very lucky he got to the doctor when he did....or the tour would have been over permanently.

Here's what happened.  Normally this diet wouldn't kill you but because he had a undiagnosed condition...the results were nearly catastrophic.

"the 57-year-old guitarist was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery prompting the cancellation of Van Halen's remaining tour dates while he takes six month to recover.

Now details of his injury have emerged, suggesting he was on the brink of death after trying a cayenne-based detox diet which caused his intestines to "explode".

The controversial diet replaces food with a liquid mix of fruit, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. It promises fast weight loss, but almost killed Eddie instead. "

Wolfgang Van Halen on Life in the Spotlight: ‘There Will Always Be the Haters’

Quote
Growing up in one of rock’s preeminent musical families with a classical composer’s first name, Wolfgang Van Halen was probably destined to be a musician before he was big enough to pick up a bass — but as he pointed out during a recent interview, he says that was still able to find his own path.

“My dad introduced me to AC/DC before I could even talk,” Van Halen recalled to Noisecreep. “But the band that I found on my own that I truly fell in love with was Blink-182.”

The draw, he explained, was the power trio format. “I loved the idea that they had two lead singers, and the vocal harmonies they use. I also started playing drums first, and Travis Barker is amazing,” he enthused. “I would play along to all of the Blink-182 records. The other thing I loved about the band was that it was a trio like Muse or the Police. Three people getting it done. I love it.”

After switching from drums to guitar, Wolfgang joined a power trio of his own: Van Halen, which found itself without a lead singer after Sammy Hagar‘s second departure following their 2004 tour. “I switched to bass because it was the only position open in Van Halen,” he laughed. “I didn’t really get into the bass until we started messing around in the studio for about a year before the 2007 Van Halen tour. We rehearsed for a long time and at first it was just fun, and then when we got Dave [Lee Roth] involved, it got really serious.”

That tour ended up forging a musical bond that’s gone on to become an important part of his career outside Van Halen, too. “I’ve always been a huge Alter Bridge fan, and on the 2007 Van Halen tour we happened to be in the same city, so I went to go see them play and we met for the first time. We got along really well and kept in touch after that,” Wolfgang explained. And after guitarist Mark Tremonti found himself without bassist Brian Marshall for a tour in late 2012, he knew who to call.

“I was flattered that Mark thought of me for the gig, but he asked me out of nowhere,” Van Halen recalled. “I called my dad and asked him what he thought. He said, ‘F— yeah! It would be awesome.’ That’s all I needed to hear. So I called Mark back and told him I was in. My first show as a member of Tremonti was in New Jersey the day after I joined.”

Joining a band with a pre-existing fanbase can be tough for a musician, but it’s something Wolfgang is accustomed to. “At first they were all surprised, but they’ve been so nice to me on Twitter and Facebook,” he said when asked about how Tremonti’s fans have treated him. “There are always the haters, but that’s the way the Internet is anyway. I’m sure people will complain about our interview here. What can you do?”
Title: Re: Van Halen Live
Post by: Chiprocks1 on February 22, 2013, 11:07:24 am
I find it hugely hypocritical of Eddie to go "F --- yeah" when Wolfie asked his father for his blessing to tour with Alter Bridge, and yet Eddie more or less fired Michael Anthony for doing side projects on his own. It has nothing to do with him playing with Sammy, but everything to do with Mikey seeking creative output outside the VH camp. How is that fair?

Yea, I was surprised to see that too. Then again, I’m pretty sure Eddie is batshit crazy. Anything out of his mouth should be responded with a head tilted to the side. Why oh why does Roth continue to hold onto a thread?

I’m not even going to post that Roth made recently appealing to the band to bring back Michael Anthony

David Lee Roth Wants Michael Anthony Back in Van Halen (http://ultimateclassicrock.com/van-halen-david-lee-roth-michael-anthony-reunion/)

Quote
There’s once again drama in the world of Van Halen, with singer David Lee Roth complaining about a recent lack of activity and communication within the band, and openly calling for a reunion with original bassist Michael Anthony.

In a wide-ranging (and frankly, downright inspiring) interview with Rolling Stone that primarily documents his recent adventures living in Japan, Roth declares that he’d love to make more music with Van Halen, but laments that it’s been over a year since their last tour and says that he’s “not sure what’s in (guitarist) Ed (Van Halen)’s mind at this point.”

(In fairness, it should be remembered that Eddie Van Halen underwent emergency surgery for diverticulitis at an unspecified point last year, a procedure that carries an estimated four to six month recovery period.)

Roth also goes on to explain that he and Eddie “haven’t written a new song in 20 years,” and suggests that the group’s 2012 album ‘A Different Kind of Truth‘ was comprised of even more reworked material than most originally suspected: “Almost all of the music that you hear on our most recent album was written and demoed before the first album.”

In the most eyebrow-raising part of the interview, “Diamond Dave” also calls it “a disappointment” that the group hasn’t reunited with Anthony, who wasn’t invited back — and in fact, was replaced by Eddie’s son Wolfgang — when the group reconfigured with Roth for a tour in 2007.

“What we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever — that was in Michael Anthony,” Roth explains. “In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys… so I would always look forward to that reunion.”

Anthony is currently a member of Chickenfoot alongside Van Halen’s second singer, Sammy Hagar. Wolfgang’s mother, actress Valerie Bertinelli, told Detroit’s WRIF back in March that the lure of playing with his son is what brought Eddie Van Halen out of his long break from touring and recording.

Why is Roth rocking a boat that has proven to be so easily capsized in the past? A sense that time is not exactly in his favor anymore seems to be his primary motive: “For me, 60 is the new 80. You oughta see my X-rays. So get going, start heading north. And whether we accomplish anything or not becomes beside the point. The goal is to get with somebody and get with a group or team or a squad and get going on something that everybody’s contributing to.”

Thanks for the link. Yeah, I can see Dave's tenure in the band ending sooner rather than later, especially after going on record wanting Mikey back in he band. Like I said a few post back, the guy that's gonna have to step up and get this done is Alex. I think Wolfie would actually step aside for this. I've never seen him as the problem, it's always been Eddie.

Obviously this isn't VH live, but with Michael joining John 5 onstage, is there any more reason enough to get him back in Van Halen now? The dude's voice is just so f*cking good. Why Eddie wouldn't want to take him back and really bring back that vintage sound is beyond me. This clip alone should wake Eddie the f*ck up. Hopefully.

Well, just punch me in the head. I’m not sure why I ordered Van Halen live at Tokyo Dome after I heard the one horrible cut that was released a few weeks back. I might have because the library is really in a dry spell of late. Not much in my queue at all. So why not.

Well, recently I saw the band perform on the Jimmy Kimmel show and it was phenomenally appalling again. Like the sound bite, the visual performance was similar. Sounds like the musicians are awesome, but Diamond Dave completely shreds up any kind of singing talent in the band.

I see a few die hards fans that are trying in vain to defend what they are hearing. IMO, they come off as idiots. This is really a head scratcher on why this product is being put out.

I saw the performance yesterday and I thought Dave was horrible. Eddie, Alex and Wolfie were great. VH hasn't always been the best Live band out there when Dave is front and center. They were good in the 80s for sure. But since the Reunion Tour, I have found Dave to very lazy on stage. He makes no effort to even sing in key or even in the right spot. He's too preoccupied with prancing on stage to even give a f*ck. I haven't even been able to get through any bootleg concerts of theirs in the last few years. With that said, I really wish and hope that the original four (talkin' bout Michael Anthony) will reconvene and do another album together and go out tour. Mike covers up a lot of the vocal issues that Dave clearly has and has always had.

And David is still hard to listen too and watch. Good gawd his stage movements are just... weird.

Serious problems here. Eddie and the band can sound great, but if 50% of it sounds like a weasel getting stepped on, THAT can ruin the whole experience. I've said it before... I'm a sound (and video) snob. Even intermittent issues can ruin the whole experience.

I'll pick up the Tokyo CD soon. I have a sneaking suspicion I'll know very quickly on what to take from it.

OPENING NIGHT 2020 David Lee Roth Vegas ***ENTIRE SHOW***

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5BWLUgymfY&t=201s

I went into this very, very, veeeeeeeeeery skeptical. If you know me, I just don't think that Dave can cut it live....even in his prime he had a lot of problems and definitely the Reunion Tour with Van Halen was just awful. So, yeah, went into this one expecting the same. So for, 3 songs into the show, the band is f*cking firing on all cylinders and Dave, to my surprise sounds better than he has in years. I will continue to watch as much as I can of the show. Let's see how he holds up. Bonus for the top quality audio and video for this one.
