Added Episode 1: Just Act Normal

I love, love, love this show!! I just can't believe it's been almost 12 years already since the show came...and went. Biggest crime ever was not bringing this back for a second season. It's a great show with great actors and my memories of  the show are pretty fond because I was fortunate to get to watch them film here and there throughout it's run since it was shot in and around San Diego.

I will probably post a couple more ScreenCaps per episode highlighting some of the notable San Diego landmarks shot in the series. It's been a few years since I've watched Cover Me. This will be fun for me no doubt.

Saint James by the Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla

The Pilot episode sets up the background for what's to come and how the family ended up getting involved with the FBI and what each member of the family's role is in being "backup" for their father, Danny (Peter Dobson). This is an ensemble piece, but is seen through the eyes of Chance (Michael Angarano). The voice of the Narrator is supplied by David Faustino (Married...with Children) as the Older Chance as we are hearing the story told years later through his recollection of the cases the family were involved with. This one was on taking down a Mob Boss. This was also the first time that I took notice of Melora Hardin who would then go onto The Office. She plays the mother, Barbara.

The bottom 2 ScreenCaps took place at Saint James by the Sea Episcopal Church in La Jolla (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Saint+James+by+the+Sea+Episcopal+Church+in+La+Jolla&hl=en&ll=32.844384,-117.27717&spn=0.001731,0.003484&sll=32.826333,-117.279035&sspn=0.001794,0.003484&vpsrc=6&gl=us&hq=Saint+James+by+the+Sea+Episcopal+Church&hnear=Country+Club,+San+Diego,+California&t=m&z=19&layer=c&cbll=32.844353,-117.277294&panoid=bNmoXyUlJ2yEJxGTGnQx0w&cbp=12,18.82,,0,-7.83). The case involved taking down a shady Stock Broker firm that was swindling innocent people out of their life savings by pushing bogus stocks onto them. The tension here wasn't so much the unscrupulous people pulling this off, it was the fact that Danny was "tempted" to stray from his marriage in order to get in deeper with his mark. There are so many innuendo's with that last line that I'm not gonna even try to explain to you. (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/new_tongue.gif)

This episode was the first time I ever saw Frank John Hughes (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/general-discussion/i-saw-a-celebrity-get-me-outta-here!!!/msg3335/#msg3335) at work doing the whole acting thing. He would have a recurring role on the show as Danny's partner.

The bottom 2 ScreenCaps took place at Camino De La Costa in La Jolla (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=32.826316,-117.278972&hl=en&ll=32.826197,-117.278873&spn=0.001785,0.003484&num=1&vpsrc=0&gl=us&t=m&z=19&layer=c&cbll=32.826333,-117.279035&panoid=Kg9GBUEcIyC9VlcI69uXDA&cbp=12,303.98,,0,8.2), which has a killer beach literally just 10 feet from the house. I go there from time to time.

Michael Angarano

Chance (Michael Angarano) and Ruby (Antoinette Picatto) are witnesses to a murder of a City Councilman who has ties to the Russian Mafia. Now the Hitman is after the two kids who are the only ones that can identify him. Celeste (Cameron Richardson) has a dance recital that is just about the most bizarre dance ever. It's just...weird...but funny.

Peter Dobson & Shaun Toub

The case revolves around Spiro (Shaun Toub) who Danny (Peter Dobson)could never nail for murder charges back in 1985 but was sent away on lesser charges. Present day, Danny's current case involves George Evans (Alan Blumenfeld) and in an effort to get close to his mark, uses Chance by getting him onto the Little League team to play along side George's son. Unbeknownst to Danny, the Umpire of the League turns out to be Spiro, who had relocated to San Diego to start a new life with his son who is also on the team.

The bottom ScreenCap took place at Corvette Diner (http://www.clicksandiegocalifornia.com/restaurants/corvettediner/). At one point in time, this was the most happening spot in San Diego. The original location for the diner is no more. They have relocated to another spot with a completely remodeled look, which absolutely bites. It looks like any other chain resturant now. They didn't keep with the theme of the 50's. Shameful. Don't let the above link fool you. The new location is using the outside facade as well as interiors of the old diner to lure people.

Stephen Lee

The introduction of Danny's brother Frank (Stephen Lee) who is serving time for murder, blackmails his way out of Prison to help Danny put away the "Enforcer" who is making his way up the ladder or success by killing off Bookies. There wasn't a whole lot of sets used for this episode as the majority of the scenes took place in prison or in the backroom of a ice cream parlor for illegal poker games.

Western Metal Supply Co.

Case involving a sting operation with Ruby entering a Beauty Pageant to get closer to Gabrielle Vega (Alex Meneses) who runs a clothing line and hires illegal immigrants south of the border to work as cheap labor who also ends up dead. Chance poses as a photographer for the San Diego Union Tribune as his cover to do recon and surveillance of all parties involved. As the family tackles this end of the operation, Danny (Peter Dobson) and Brooks (Frank John Hughes) head to Mexico to track down the Coyote that is smuggling people into the US. Overall this was a pretty enjoyable episode with everyone getting involved in breaking the case.

The scene was clearly filmed before Petco Park was reality.

A.J. Johnson & Peter Dobson

I had forgotten what an emotional roller coaster this particular episode was. It's been so long since I've watched the series, let alone this episode, so when it played out, I had the same feeling and gut reaction to it, just like the first time when it originally aired. The episode starts off pretty lighthearted with Chance inviting his friends over to a pool party for some fun and sun and to celebrate his Birthday. But then it gets very real, very fast...

Well not at the bridge per se. The bridge was used as the backdrop. It was also used as a "prop" on Season 1 of Veronica Mars in a major way and not just as scenery either.

The Wonder Bread Factory

Another great episode and somewhat very dark when compared to the first 6 episodes. This one was even darker than Our Mister Brooks, with The Fever Flip focused primarliy on an old case in which Danny and Barbara were part of a sting operation to take down a child p0rnographer back in the mid 70's. So, years later when Kerry Fever (Jere Burns) is released from prison, he sets out to exact revenge. But a little backstory in "why so serious".

After a few dark episodes, this one was a bit more light-hearted, minus the brutal stabbing to open the episode up with. For this one, Danny commits himself into a hospital in the hopes that he can bring down Mob Boss Joe Collado (Val Bisoglio) who is rumored to be using the insanity plea to keep himself out of Prison. As always, Danny uses his family as backup to gain access to places that are off-limits. In this case, what better way to do that than having Chance perform magic tricks. The entire episode itself is based on magic and misdirection as we see a flashback from Danny and Barbara's past as magicians as part of their sting operation to nab Mickey 'Eggman' Sparks (Paul Hayes) who after years in prison is released and somehow winds up at the same hospital.

So what's the first thing that the Arno Family does once they get settled into Utah? They fight for their lives now that a disgruntled government employee is out to take down Danny by framing him to be corrupt and stealing money and taking bribes. To add insult to injury, Danny's brother Frank is released from prison and shows up on his doorstep. But it's when he finds out that he is working with the Feds to build their case against Danny that sets him off.

Graham Greene

This was not one of my favorite episodes of the series. The mall scene between Celeste (Cameron Richardson) and her new friend Robin was the epitome of bad, over-acting where they both had to cry on cue to make it more "dramatic". The line reading was just...weird. Cameron does a pretty good job with the rest of the cast, namely the Arno Family, but here it was like a train wreck.

The cases themselves were kind of boring with Danny and Chance tailing a potential ped0phile and Barbara and Ruby looking into Robin's past to discover that her mother is a member of the Most Wanted club.

The episode wasn't a complete loss since Graham Greene popped up, albeit in a very small role as Michael Nighthorse. Also, Chance's imitation of Marlon Brando's famous 'Stella' scene was pretty funny and I couldn't help but keep from grinning.

This was a fantastic episode revolving around the destruction of the Arno Family. Even a family that seems to be picture perfect has it's flaws and they came out here when Danny and Barbara get divorce as part of their sting operation to nail an Arsonist (Cameron Watson). But things never go the way it's expected to with these guys.

I haven't seen this episode in a long, long time. But as soon as I started watching it, I remembered it being pretty bad. This was really bad. From the story, to the dialog to the acting, this was atrocious. The producers seemed to be at the point of hiring anyone that had a SAG card to fill up the roles of Agents on the show. This was really embarrassing to watch. The story itself was pretty damn weak too, involving a "Witness Protection" base in putting 2 victims of a fake hit together in order to find what their connection is to the one that ordered the hit. A very forgettable episode. The frozen p enis gag, although funny, got old really fast and the Chippendale stripper at the bachelorette party at the end was just.....stupid. They couldn't even end the episode right, but instead went straight for a pointless epilogue. It's just a shame that it took this particular episode to finally give Graham Green a meatier role.

Peter Gregory & Gregg Henry

It's a race against time as Danny poses as a priest to get the help from Henry Crowe (Gregg Henry) who is scheduled to be executed at Midnight and he may be the only one that can save a little boy who is being held by a killer, Bud Childress (Peter Gregory) who is threatening to kill him in the name of Henry if they go through with his execution. This was definitely a departure for the show. Very moody and somber. The song that plays near the end during the montage was probably the best song they could have chosen for the scene.

Dayton Callie

Ah yeah. The Vegas episode. My home away from home. Mother's Day picks up on a story that was only mentioned in passing all the way back to the Pilot (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/tv's-greatest-hits-and-misses/cover-me-(season-1-entire-series)/msg4348/#msg4348) of the series, where Chance is narrating how his family got into the FBI game when his father, Danny, told him the story about how his partner at the time and his family were gunned down when he got made by the mob. The one that ordered the hit was never identified...till now.

Adding to the awesomeness of this episode is Shirley Jones (The Partridge Family) as Mary Colomby and Dayton Callie (Sons Of Anarchy) as Ed Linson. For those that never knew or cared to find out, Peter Dobson played Elvis in Forrest Gump. So, it's here that he gets to revisit that role. "Thank you, thank you very much. Uh huh." More Elvis news, he also reprises the role in the movie Protecting the King (2007).

This is where the show kind of lost it by changing it's tone. I don't know if they were trying to lure in a different demographic or what, but I certainly didn't like the fact that they changed the opening credits and music. Although the new opening is good, it's nowhere near as good as the original. As for the episode, it was just completely different from anything that has come before. It had every cliche you could think of here included broad physical comedy. Kind of hard to make it work when the plot is basically a crossed between Porky's and Slasher films. It's not as bad as it sounds, but it's not one to be remembered either.

I had to laugh at some of the typical camera angles that you find in horror movies. It just doesn't work. And whoever did the lighting for the "scary" scenes needs to be shot. Why are they using colored lights and gels in a dark basement of a Hospital?

Glenn Morshower

This is where I did a facepalm back in the day when the show runner for Cover Me literally jump's the shark by trying to appeal to fans of the X-Files by giving Danny (Peter Dobson) a new partner, Ellen Lederer (Jodi Russell) who in the show was the spitting image of Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) . If that wasn't bad enough, suddenly they had Danny dressing like Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) as well. Why they chose to go down this road in this particular episode about Voxing of all things is something I will never understand. Even with Glenn Morshower (24) on board as a crooked boxing Promoter, this episode was weak, through no fault of his own.

Getting back to Jodi Russell. Technically this wasn't her first episode. She actually joined the cast on Mother's Day (Part 1), but she was in a bikini most of the time and they weren't going for the X-Files connection. But here, it was blatant and beyond obvious what they were doing.

Peter Dobson & Ted Marcoux

As I remember it, this was the last great episode of the series. One of the best if not THE best one for sure. Two separate stories collide with each other. The first story revolves around Danny being partnered with Mario Holiday (Ted Marcoux), a dirty cop that he hopes to bring down as he is suspected of killing the last 2 partners of his own. The other story revolves around Lisa Ramone (Kay Lenz), down and out, who is searching for the truth about Chance Arno identity after having been fired trying to prove that he exists. This quest of hers stemmed from her encounter with him as he recounted his story about how his family was dead back in Bazooka Joe (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/tv's-greatest-hits-and-misses/cover-me-(season-1-entire-series)/msg4447/#msg4447).

Timothy Busfield cameos as Det. Mackowitz who helps Lisa Ramone track down the Arno Family as well as being the Director for this episode. He did a great job, like he always does.

Michael Angarano

Up till today, I was always under the assumption that this was the final episode of the series given that I never saw any of the 3 remaining episodes that come after. There were no promos for anything that came after this, so it has always rubbed me the wrong way that The River was the end because I just did not like having it go out on such a downer. This episode is bad for a lot of reasons. But the biggest is that I just don't like Polygamy stoy lines. No matter how it's filmed it's always gonna come off incestuous and it just makes me feel...

I feel bad for Antoinette Picatto. Her role as Ruby in the series has been pretty lacking. Up till this episode, she has really only had one other episode devoted to her character, and this wasn't a very memorable one due to the content. I give this episode a half star rating just based on the knowledge that this isn't the last episode of Cover Me. Otherwise, it would have gotten Zero Stars.

Ah. I remember this one. I guess this aired out of order because this definitely came before The River as I taped these shows during the original broadcast. Anyway, this one has Barbara Arno getting gunned down at a Rave Party. The Cop on the scene then proceeds to question each member of the Arno Family to get to the root of what happened. But each member tells a different story, thus the clever title which comes directly from Rashomon.

A little interesting observation here while watching this episode, I see the series went back and used the scene from Beauty Marks (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/tv's-greatest-hits-and-misses/cover-me-(season-1-entire-series)/msg4375/#msg4375) and dropped in the Western Metal Supply Co. Peter Dobson & Cameron Richardson

I gotta laugh at the sight of Chris Owen as a Investigator, looking into the murder of a Teacher at a school by one of the students. You may not know his name, but you certainly know his face and the role he played in the American Pie movies as Chuck Sherman, "sophisticated sex robot, sent back in time to change the future for one lucky lady"....Oh, never mind.

Anyway, Danny poses as a teacher himself so that he can crack this case from the inside. If there is one thing I wouldn't do if I were Danny, I certainly wouldn't have my 2 daughters in school working undercover, especially if this student will act out, putting them in grave danger. But nothing is ever going to be as dangerous as Chris Owen's lame attempt at growing an Abe Lincoln beard for his role here. Haha. This is funny stuff.

The Arno Family

It's so weird to get "new" episodes (Viva Zapatos and Sub Zero) of a series cancelled, 11 years after the fact. Although Viva Zapatos is a lot better than The River, it's still an average episode. This one finds Mario Lopez as Lazaro Chaveco, a Cuban soccer player who defects to America. His agenda for doing so is questionable since he may or may not be doing this to commit terrorist acts in the US. Overall, the acting was horrible as Mario's Koo-ban accent at times was his interpretation of Al Pacino in Scarface. Bah. As bad as Mario was in this, I'm pretty confident in what truly killed this show was.....

That brings to a close, Cover Me. The final scene with the picture frame was a nice way to end the series. I wonder if the writing was already on the wall and they shot this scene to reflect that. Getting the chance to re-watch this series again, it's was very clear that the show really started going downhill after they moved from San Diego to Utah.
