Long before Gwen Stefani and Hollaback Girl, there was Helix and Rock You. Yes, it's been described as a heavy metal version of a Cheer-leading song. No, it's not as cheesy as it sounds. I actually think it still holds up rather well after all these years and adds to it's charm. Back in the day it was their biggest hit and got a lot of radio airplay here, but it's far from their best stuff. Walkin' The Razor's Edge is a product of it's time. But where the majority of albums that came out during this era, this album as a whole never really should have been lumped in with the other hair bands of the day. It doesn't sound like what you would it expect as it's hard edge with some good bite to the guitars and bass, and the songs are infinitely more memorable.

All in all, a great band that produced a great album and I never get tired of listening to it. Brian Vollmer has a great voice and Paul Hackman and Brent "The Doctor" Doerner made a great duel guitar team. Daryl Gray and Greg "Fritz" Hinz kept a pretty good pocket on Bass and Drums for the rest of the band to play over. If there is one criticism I have about the album it's the mix. The drums at times does get buried and isn't as full as it should have been.

Fave Songs: Rock You, Animal House, Gimme Gimme Good Lovin', My Kind Of Rock and Make Me Do (Anything You Want).

Album cover phucking rocks. It just looks so damn cool.

This is easily their best album and gets my vote in the Poll.

I guess in these parts Helix was pretty much looked over. Deep Cuts The Knife is the only song I've heard by the boys... and I do like it.

Helix - The Kids Are All Shakin'

They were kinda looked over all over the US because it's most likely due to them being a Canadian Metal Band. Unless the market had a rich-heavy HM scene, they probably wouldn't be the first band to get airplay with the likes of Ratt, Motley Crue and Judas Priest getting first dibs. Deep Cuts is a great song, but check out The Kids Are All Shakin' for some "gospel" Metal. I guarantee you, you'll love the hook and melody. I say gospel because that's how I hear the backup singers in my head even though it's not technically gospel. Anyway, it's a great sing-along song. Me love long time.

What a goofy ass video. But then again, they all were.

I do hear some gospel like stuff, I do hear also a lot of the other hair bands of then too. I could see why they would get lost in the mix.

Goofy my ass! All my radios have little Helix players running around inside! (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/new_tongue.gif) Ha, if only they still made goofy ass videos today!!!!!

Helix (Long Way To Heaven) 1985
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_03halfstar.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Helix%20500x500/1985LongWayToHeaven.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Helix%20500x500/1985LongWayToHeavenBack.jpg)

The main reason why I picked up Long Way To Heaven was for The Kid's Are All Shakin' which I thought was the coolest song at the time. Yeah, I had heard of Deep Cuts The Knife prior to that, but it wasn't enough for me to grab it right then and there. The best way to describe the album is that the best song to start the album is Kids, then it's Knife and then it's Ride The Rocket. With each song after that it's a step down. The album is somewhat lopsided because of the track list order. If all the good songs weren't on one side (or the first half of the album) and spread throughout, it would be uneven if that make sense.

This album back then was to me a major disappointment and nowhere near that of Walkin' The Razor's Edge. Although this allbum has it's moments, it is not their best album in spite of what other fans say. Sorry, but it just is not.

Fave songs: The Kids Are All Shakin', Deep Cuts The Knife, Ride The Rocket and Long Way To Heaven. Album cover is ok. I still prefer Walkin' The Razor's Edge over this one.

Helix (Wild In The Streets) 1987
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_04star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Helix%20500x500/1987WildInTheStreetsLiteColor.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Helix%20500x500/1987WildInTheStreetsBack.jpg)

Wild In The Streets, although a commercial flop in the US was a return to greatness for me as this one has a ton of great songs with awesome riffs and hooks. Not quite as good as Walkin' The Razor's Edge, but a better overall record as far as sound and songs than that of Long Way To Heaven. This album still holds up extremely well after all these years. The biggest hit on here is definitely the earworm inducing Dream On. You listen to this one once and it stays with you for a long time. Although I like the song Wild In The Streets, the opening riff is a little too close to that of Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' from Razor's Edge album. Another song of note is She's Too Tough, written by Joe Elliot. It would eventually make it's way to onto Def Leppard's Retro Active album.

Fave Songs: Wild In The Streets, Never Gonna Stop The Rock, and the MVP for the album, Dream On
