Even though I knew about Madonna from day 1, it took a long, long time for me to become a fan of hers. I'm talking about half way through her career before she really did something that I could sink my teeth into. But from the beginning all the way up to Ray Of Light, I knew her primarily from videos and radio airplay. She had a few songs here and there that I liked, but as a whole, her music just didn't do anything for me. But once I became a fan, I went back and bought a chunk of her CD's for about 2 bucks a piece at a Second-hand store. It was cheap enough that I could check out her earlier stuff as a whole and not consider it a huge investment with my wallet.

Listening to this today, I realize why I've only listened to her debut a couple of times. It's just not that good. It's disposable dreck. There is only one really good song and that of course is Borderline, which has a great melody and the arrangement really suits Madonna here. And the tempo is more akin to what I would have liked for the entire album to be. This is definitely a dance record, but not one that I could ever listen to all that much. The only other songs of note are Holiday and Lucky Star. That's it.

Fave Songs: Borderline

The Album Cover is killer for sure. Vintage Madonna. Yummy.

Madonna (Like A Virgin) 1984
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_03star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Madonna%20500x500/1984LikeAVirgin.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Madonna%20500x500/1984LikeAVirginBack.jpg)

For a decent album Like A Virgin is, it opens up with one of the worst songs in her career. Sure, it's a big hit for her and a lot of die hard fans love Material Girl. But I can't stand it. I hated it when it was all over MTV and it's just as bad as now. Another dance song that just gets annoying in its repetitiveness is Over and Over. The irony of the songs title isn't lost on me. It's a carry over from her first album in trying to keep dance tracks out there for clubs.

As much as the song Like A Virgin has been played to death, the song still holds up rather well. From it's catchy melody and the syth-heavy beat, the song is hard to turn off. But I can't help but think of two things when I listen to this one. A) Weird Al Yankovich and B) Reservoir Dogs (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/reservoir-dogs-(1992)/msg5856/#msg5856). If there is one song that actually goes out of its way to break away from 'Dance pop" drivel, it would have to be You Don't Live Here Anymore. I dig the arrangement and Madonna actually shows that she was trying to find an identity that would really come to the forefront with Ray Of Light.

Get Into The Groove and Dress You Up still are good, catchy songs that I can't ever turn off when it comes across the radio or TV. I really like Nile Rodgers guitar solo in Dress You Up for sure. It's short and sweet, but you end up humming the solo long after. Shoo-Bee-Doo is a great change up from what has been typical songs from her on her first two albums. With this one its got a great tempo change and a sing-along song that actually doesn't suck. Great keys and sax.

It's kind of bizarre to be watching Keith Carradine in Dexter (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/dvd's-blu-rays/dexter-(season-4-2009)/msg6882/#msg6882) and then to watch him in the video for Material Girl. He's practically unrecognizable. Doesn't look anything like he use to. Crazy.

Album Cover gets an A+

There is less than a handful of songs that I like by Madonna, and then they were because I heard them in spillover from massive airplay. I've never went to seek out her work.

I know I could not stand the early years with her chipmunk voice. Her deeper voiced songs have some appeal.

So I'm highly biased off the bat. It's not that here music is bad or good, just does nothing for me.

I totally get what you saying and it's kind of where I was then and to some extent still am now with regards to her earlier stuff. But I absolutely know for a fact that if you checked out Ray Of Light, you would become a fan of that album specifically. Review of that album coming soon. I still gotta knock out the early stuff. I should get a medal for this!!

Wasn't Ray Of Light one of her more dance floor projects?

No. It's deeper stufff that  f u c k i n g  kicks ass. There are a few songs that can be viewed as dance tracks. But you may have seen the videos that were remixed. You gotta remember, she is a dance-pop artist and her record company will remix stuff specifically for Dance Clubs. These are usually put out as 12 inch Singles. This one leans more heavily on electronica for sure.

Well, I'm hesitant with electronica too. It was sometime back one of the members of a music forum like this absolutely loved electronica. He even sent me Joe Walsh's Lifes Been Good electronica-zed. Awful, just plain WTF.

That's the thing, when it's electronica at its purest form and what I would call mind-numbing absurdity, it will be awful. But when it's done right, using the basics of it and transforming it into an art form, it can be a thing of beauty. Taking an existing classic like Life's Been Good and mixing it with electronica is doomed to fail. I don't even have to listen to it to know it's not going to be good. That's the problem with electronica as a whole. DJ's take old classics and remixed with with the new genre style and butcher it. They are just trying to repackage an old song and make it club accessible which is the wrong way to go about it.

I should have been more clear in describing Ray Of Light's tone. It takes elements of electronica and uses it to work off of rather than being a slave to it.

I'm pulling this completely from my @ss, but the name Paul Oakenfold comes to mind. Is he electronica? or some other genre. I only know this because of my Pandora station of trip hop. I seem to remember his name and electronica. I guess there's overlap and subtle differences.

I could be way off and sorry about derailing this thread.

Back to Madonna.

Madonna (True Blue) 1986
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_03halfstar.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Madonna%20500x500/1986TrueBlue.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Madonna%20500x500/1986TrueBlueBack.jpg)

It's crazy how True Blue has one of the greatest songs Madonna has ever recorded and one of worst songs in her career residing on the same album. The greatest in my opinion has to be Live To Tell. This was the song that really made me take notice of what she could do, song wise. The arrangement is perfect, the melody is fantastic and overall it showcases that she could actually sing. On the flip side, the worst song ever is True Blue. I originally liked the song for it's blatant pop sensibilities. But once that damn MTV's Make Madonna's True Blue Video contest ran, showing what seemed like everyone's amateur video that was sent in, I was stabbing my eye with whatever sharp...or dull object I could find.  As much as I hated the song after the first 5 videos, I STILL chose to watch the whole damn thing! Why?! (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/banghead.gif)

It took many, many years before I could listen to the song without doing bodily harm to myself. It still reminds me of that lost weekend. Papa Don't Preach I thought was a very bold decision on her part at the time to do something of merit and the song itself still holds up. The other great song here is definitely Open Your Heart. This was the perfect blend of a dance track that wasn't  f u c k e d  up with cheap sound FX in the arrangement. Fantastic sing along song and one of the few songs of hers that seems to get better and better over time. The one thing that I remember most about this song was that it kinda got me started down my Clubbing days and the moment that kicked started it was the time I was at Disneyland at Videopolis and the place went nuts when they showed her video on the huge JumboTron. I thought it was pretty weird that Disneyland would play a video about Madonna, who works as a Peep Show Stripper with a bunch of kids on the dance floor.

Fun fact, the stage that was used for Videopolis is the same stage that was used at the US Festival a few years earlier.

La Isla Bonita is another great song that showcased her ability to not only change music styles, but to incorporate different flavors from other countries for that international hit that it became. It doesn't suck and has a great mid tempo to it. The rest of the songs are just average at best and pretty much disposable. But overall, this album was better than her last for sure.

Fave Songs: Papa Don't Preach, Open Your Heart, Live To Tell and La Isla Bonita

Album Cover gets an A+++++++. Probably one of my all time favorite album covers. Iconic. The cover is so sick that even Dweezil Zappa (http://youtu.be/5U6kk6phVqE) had it airbrushed onto his guitar. Check out the link for all it's glory. Awesome!!!

Madonna (Like A Prayer) 1989

Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time
Like A Prayer
at #237

We all know the biggest hits from this album, whether you like Madonna or not. It was unavoidable. Madonna owned it in 1989 from MTV to her Pepsi commercial to all the controversy surrounding her, she couldn't be avoided. And I think this was the main reason why I never bought into her hype, even though I was a fan of a few of her songs by then. It was just too much. I've always been resistant to popular trends dictated by society and if everyone wants something, I want no association with it. So, Madonna was huge then which meant that I couldn't get away from her fast enough. The only song I really liked at the time was Cherish, which had a pretty cool melody and I loved the way her voiced sounded. It was refreshing because it didn't sound like a dance track. It wasn't.

Eventually I did get into Madonna (that's what I said (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Smilies/0%20All%20Smilies/DevilLaughing.gif)) later in her career and bought her earlier stuff. Listening to Like A Prayer then and now, I still come away pretty damn impressed with what's on the album. Like I said, you know all the big hits, but those aren't the best. After Like A Prayer which is the perfect opener. I'm a big fan of Gospel and the song does a fantastic job of marrying dance and Gospel into a perfect song. After that there is Express Yourself which is just as cool, it goes into Love Song, a duet with Prince and it  f u c k i n g  kicks ass and is hands down the best song here. It's definitely typical of a Prince production, but damn the groove that lays itself out is so addicting. Even those that are devoid of any rhythm can swing with this one with ease.

There are a couple of true dance tracks on here, but the rest is actually Madonna going out of her comfort zone and creating some really cool songs to showcase her singing range, especially with Promise To Try, Oh Father and Spanish Eyes. Some great Piano and acoustic arrangements here. If there is a weird song to be found here, it would be Act Of Contrition and I still like it, because it's different and outside the box. Dear Jessie sounds like a song that No Doubt would do and it's probably why I'm a big fan of the song.

Fave Songs: Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Love Song, Promise To Try, Cherish, Dear Jessie, Oh Father and Spanish Eyes.

I like the Album cover, but I never knew if that was in fact Madonna's stomach. Still a cool cover regardless if it is or not.

Madonna (Erotica) 1992
(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/Star%20Ratings/HTL_05star.gif)

(http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Madonna%20500x500/1992Erotica.jpg) (http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i266/Chiprocks1/CD%20and%20Album%20Covers/Madonna%20500x500/1992EroticaBack.jpg)

Whenever I listen to Erotica, it reminds me of the massive transformation that Michael Jackson went with in creating Dangerous. He forever altered his sound and style, never to really return to what made him a hit in the first place. The same can be said of Madonna's electronica-infused follow up to Like A Prayer. With Erotica, there is no hint of anything that came before. It's geared strictly to creating a new Madonna, one that isn't easy to put in a box if going by past songs. Even though it's a bit heavy on the beats and rhythms of electronica, I for one absolutely love it and it's become somewhat of a calling card with each successive album after this one.

The thing that I find very interesting is that the album as a whole plays well as background music more than anything else she has done. Sure it has a couple of songs that are hits in the sense that they are easily recognizable. But some of the other songs that are considered radio "hits" are really hits that I wouldn't sing along to. That's not to say they suck. They don't. It's just in the arrangement of the music and the way they are being sung, they don't lend themselves to being crowd participation songs. How better to explain it? This is the kind of album I would put on before I went out clubbing to get myself pumped up for a long night of dancing. It's an album that you can groove to and look cool doing it.

There are some fantastic tunes that I still enjoy a lot today. It's actually hard to pick a true favorite because every time I listen to this one, it changes. But I can tell you that my favorite track back when I first pick this up (along with her book Sex) was Rain. It's about a close to a true single on the album that wasn't electronic. It's a beautiful piece of music and her singing is phenomenal. Fantastic melody.

Fave Songs: Erotica, Bye Bye Baby, Deeper And Deeper, Where Life Begins, Waiting, Rain, Why's It So Hard and Did You Do It?

The album cover sucked then and it still sucks today....and not in a good way. Where Like A Prayer is so damn cool looking, Erotica is kinda....blah. It's like no thought went into it other than to make it salacious and it didn't even work on that level either.

Madonna Vs. Lady Gaga

I loves me some celebrity feuds!! Madonna ftw! Lady Gaga will be a footnote in music history inside of 5 years, just like Britney, Christina, Jessica and every other flavor of the week. Did Madonna purposely flash to generate controversy? Of course. Personally she needs to take it farther next time. Of course. It's all calculated. They are on Tour right now and what better way to drum up some free press than to put on a show for the masses.
