I've been patiently waiting for the premiere of this. I've seen a few promo's for the show, but nothing on par with say Terra Nova which was hitting me over the head with it every 5 minutes.

The Pilot sets up some interesting storylines that has the potential to have a good payoff down the road, that is if they get that far. As far as the first hour goes, even with a cool premise, I'm not feeling it with some of the characters, especially that of Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones). She seems oblivious about the whole scenario pertaining to Alcatraz inmates that suddenly return 50 years later without having aged a day and just accepts it as is. And she seems a bit to young to really care about the history of the inmates. The only connection she has is that she finds out later that the man that killed her partner was in fact an inmate himself and who also happens to be her Grandfather. As for Dr. Diego “Doc” Soto (Jorge Garcia), who I really liked on LOST, he just doesn't have much to do except follow Rebecca around. Granted, it's only one episode and I'm willing to give the writers a pass as they set up the series. But I was expecting a lot more from him than what we get in the series opener.
Emerson Hauser (Sam Neil) is the mysterious one that will offer the viewers the chance at for plenty of digging with regards to who he is and what his endgame is,. which kind of gets addressed somewhat at the end of the Pilot. I purposely avoided spoilers and really didn't allow myself to over think the series leading up to the premiere last night. So I was kind of surprised to see....
This being a J. J. Abrams show, I of course kept my eye out for any mention of the number 47. For those that don't know about J.J., he has pretty much put this number in all of his series from Alias to LOST to Fringe and now Alcatraz. So, let the 47 drinking game continue on. Take a shot everytime you see or hear the number pop up.....

Like I said earlier, the series has a lot of potential and I will stick around as I have faith in J.J. fixing some of the problems and making this a kick-ass series. He has never disappointed me and I don't think he will here. I'm along for the ride. I gotta point out that Jeffrey Pierce has a knack for playing roles that have ties to the past and somehow resides in San Francisco, as is the case in Journeyman, Episode 5: The Legend Of Dylan McCleen (http://pennycan.createaforum.com/tv's-greatest-hits-and-misses/journeyman-(season-1-entire-series)/msg4191/#msg4191). Just an observation.

This episode was more along the lines of what I was expected in the Pilot. Much better overall when it came to pacing and what each member of the team will in fact be asked to do. This episode follows Ernest Cobb (Joe Egender), a sniper sent away to Alcatraz. He of course returns 50 years later and starts sniping more innocent victims. The crime itself wasn't the interesting part for me, it was how he carried himself in his cell and how he try's to outsmart Chief Warden Edwin James (Jonny Coyne), who runs the Prison that I found to be more entertaining. The biggest reveal came at the end when we see...

I'm going to have to check this out. I like this kind of stuff. Just cautious of the past shows leading me down unending paths (take note of American Horror Story).

This episode was just okay for me. It came across a little too 'text-book'. There was nothing that wowed me and no twist to spin it on it's ear. The only reveal we really get is learning that Sota (Jorge Garcia) was kidnapped when he was 11 years old, which explains why he had a lot invested in finding the boy that was kidnapped by Kit Nelson (Michael Eklund). Although the show is good, it's not great and it has yet to really hook my like LOST did. I'm not expecting them to reach those lofty standards, but I do think they could push the envelope here and think outside the box and give us something we haven't seen yet. I do think that whoever kidnapped Soto was an inmate of Alcatraz. We only think that the inmates are revealing themselves in present day (2012). But what if they did a trial run back in the year that Soto was kidnapped? Eh? Hmmm? Just throwing it out there.

A good episode. Kind of standard cat and mouse chase and what I expect from the series as a whole given that it is after all a Cop chasing Bad Guy show. It wasn't until the end of the episode where it gets interesting and what I would call vintage 'LOST' moment to hook you in and force you to return next week to see if we get some answers. Like, what are the Keys used for in that Alcatraz dungeon? Is this the "gateway" to travel back in time? Is the Gatekeeper in that locked room that is sending the prisoners into the future? Interesting turn of events regarding Tommy and Ray (Robert Forster) turning out to be brothers and the fact that Ray himself has known all along about the time traveling aspect to the show. But just how much does he know though? Does he know who's behind it and how it's even possible? It was also brought up that Hauser tried to recruit Ray into his little "Alcatraz Retrieval Gang" 16 years earlier, but he declined the offer. Interesting. I'm just glad they are finally using Robert Forster in the show. Up till now he has been M.I.A.

I actually thought this episode to be a below average episode for most of its run time. It wasn't until the bomb defusing and then Hauser taking Lucy out of the hospital did it even get interesting or make me sit up and take notice. I'm getting worried with the pace and the formulaic approach to telling the stories. Right now it's kinda stuck in a very predictable format and it's not engaging for me as a viewer. They need to change it up to keep the viewers and the characters themselves on their toes. I do like that they may be giving Soto a potential love interest who just happens to be a fan of comic books.

I'm still waiting for that kick-ass-blow-them-away episode. The water-cooler moment where everyone the next day is talking about it. That hasn't happened and at this rate, I don't think it ever will. Maybe the Season Finale will have that "whoooooa" moment. This was a good episode, but still in that "by-the-book" mode of dispensing information. I guess I'm still holding out that this will turn into the next LOST. Try including more Ray (Robert Forster) in the show. He's only gotten one so far and it was by far the most interesting to date.

A pretty cool episode where the entire action takes place on Alcatraz. The Ames Brothers return to the island to finish what they started 50 years ago....find the gold. I'm really unsure of how the gold factors into the mythology of the series and how the Warden himself came into possession of it. But since it's missing in present day, maybe Hauser found it and that's where the money came from to run his Alcatraz 2.0. That cost money and I don't remember if they ever address who was funding the project to round up all the inmates that are returning.
Frank Whaley is always good in anything he is is. The cool thing is that he was captured, which means he will show up in a future episode, much like the other recaptured inmates.

Another great episode. Sonny is a sadistic motherphucka and that's putting it mildly. I really want to know what Hauser's endgame is. He isn't round up thses inmates just to rehabilitate them. That's a pointless endeavor. I can't think of the need to keep them alive, unless it does have something to do with their blood. But Hauser's reaction upon hearing about their "healing factor" tells me that this is news to him. So, that's not the motivation. But what else is it?

An innocent man sent to Alcatraz becomes a brainwashed killer due to top secret experiments being done on the inmates. That's not entirely original. But the thing I found most interesting is that apparently the same people conducting the experiments were also doing specialized blood transfusion from none other than Tommy Madsen, grandfather to Detective Rebecca Madsen. So, does that mean Tommy had some sort of anti-aging DNA within him and they were pumping all the inmates with the same blood and that there is no "Time Traveling" aspect to what is going on with all the prisoners now?
If this holds true, then what I see happening is that all the inmates have the blood, were transferred to the new pristine Alcatraz, were comatose for whatever reason, woke up and somehow they all escaped...or where let out and now Hauser is having to hunt them all down and return them to their cages. Also, if Tommy does in fact have this miracle DNA, then that also means Rebecca has it too, which will eventually make her a target by...........

I really liked this episode more for the ending than the actual episode itself because of the fact that Doc and Rebecca are starting to piece things together about Hauser keeping secrets from them, especially about Lucy and her past involvement with the '63. Probably my favorite scene in the entire episode was when Porter was put back into Gen-Pop and the Inmates were yelling at the Warden to not let Porter have a cell on their block because his Violin would keep them up at nights. So what does Porter do? He begins to play, shutting them all up and getting applause at the end. Ha. Awesome.
Most interesting reveal at the end is that Porter's blood is enough to revive Lucy from her Coma. Very curious to see if his blood/DNA will have any effect on her in a negative way, like if she becomes homicidal like he is.

Although I liked this episode, particularly the character of Garrett Stillman, it doesn't instill confidence in me that the Season Finale episode is going to give us that big "what the f u c k " moment I have been waiting for. As much as the creators of the show have tried to hype this up as being on par with LOST, it's not. Right now, Alcatraz is just an "okay" series, but it's certainly not "must-see TV". It doesn't help that they killed off Garrett Stillman at the end of the episode. So, there goes a cool character...............

I thought the episode was good. Entertaining. But the ending, the big reveal just didn't have that 'wow' factor for me. So, they are able to track the Inmates with the lead that has been injected into them? Yeah? So. That's just an earlier version of the Ankle Bracelet for prisoners. I wanted something a bit more revealing. I spent th entire season, patiently waiting and they really didn't deliver on the promise they have been hinting at all season. The big cliffhanger at the end is that Rebecca dies on the operating table from injuries sustained at the hands of her Grandfather Tommy Madsen. She's not dead. Not for long anyway. It's gonna be up to Ray to track down Tommy and convince him to go to the hospital and have him give her a blood transfusion to save her. That's what the Season 2 premiere episode will be about.

I think shows like this, well actually any show that gets a full season pickup, should be required to shoot a wrap up episode that ties these loose ends up. If the show is cancelled, air it. If it gets another season, then use the existing footage as a flashback in the new season. It's b u l l s h i t that we invest our time into these shows to get f u c k e d over at the end.
